General State Facts
*New Jersey’s nickname is The Garden State.
*New Jersey became the third state to join the union on December 18th, 1787.
*The New Jersey state flower is the common violet.
*Thousands of years ago, the area now known as New Jersey was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. These tribes included the Lenape, Munsee, and Unalachtigo.
*The first European to discover the area now known as New Jersey was the Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrazzano, around 1524.
*New Jersey was one of the original thirteen colonies ruled by the British.
*New Jersey was the site of more battles during the Revolutionary War than any other state.
*New Jersey was the first state to sign the Bill of Rights.
*New Jersey was named in honor of British colonist, George Carteret, who’d previously been the governor of the Isle of Jersey.
*The state of New Jersey is bordered by Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware.
*The Highlands are an area with many lakes and flat-topped rock ridges.
*Trees commonly found in New Jersey include the sugar maple, American chestnut, flowering dogwood, pitch pine, and the American elm.
*Wildflowers that commonly grow in New Jersey include black-eyed Susan’s, orange daylilies, Queen Anne’s lace, and violets.
*The state’s capital is Trenton.
*New Jersey’s physical geography is created of four distinct regions, which include the Ridge and Valley, the Highlands, the Piedmont, and the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
*The Ridge and Valley is a mountainous region created millions of years ago when the Delaware River cut through the Appalachian Mountains.
*The Piedmont is an area with rolling hills and narrow valleys where most of New Jersey’s major cities are located.
*The Atlantic Coastal Plain features low hills, salt marshes, and pine forests. It also includes the barrier islands, created primarily of sandy beaches.
*The highest elevation in New Jersey is 1,803 feet above sea level and is located at High Point in Sussex County.
*Lakes and ponds cover about 30 square miles in New Jersey.
*Major rivers in New Jersey include the Delaware, the Hudson River, the Passaic, the Hackensack, and the Raritan.
*Lake Hopatcong is the largest lake in New Jersey.
*Italian Americans are New Jersey’s largest ethnic group and have contributed significantly to the state’s cultural identity.
*Five counties in the northeast of the state contribute nearly two-fifths of New Jersey’s entire population. These counties include Essex, Hudson, Passaic, Bergen, and Union.
