* English colonists sent by Sir Walter Raleigh of England tried to unsuccessfully settle Roanoke Island, North Carolina in both 1585 and 1587.
*The first child of English parentage born in America was Virginia Dare. She was born on Roanoke Island, North Carolina in 1587.
*The first permanent, successful settlements in North Carolina occurred in 1653. These settlements primarily consisted of colonists from Virginia.
*North Carolina was the 12th state admitted to the union on November 21st, 1789.
*North Carolina’s official state flower is the dogwood.
*The official state tree is the pine.
*The official state gemstone is the emerald.
*North Carolina’s official state beverage is milk.
*The official state rock is granite.
*North Carolina’s official state song is The Old North State.
*In 2010, Forbes Magazine ranked North Carolina the third best state for business.
*Major agriculture products produced by North Carolina include tobacco, corn, cotton, hay, peanuts, and vegetables.
*North Carolina is America’s leading producer of mica, lithium, phosphate rock, feldspar, olivine, and pyrophyllite.
*North Carolina’s nickname is the Tar Heel State. It’s widely believe this nickname was adopted to reference the workers who worked in the state historically selling tar for use in wooden boats.
*There are 100 counties in North Carolina.
*The earliest people to live in the area now known as North Carolina were hunters and gatherers. They lived in the area at least 10,000 years ago.
*North Carolina has historically been home to many Native American tribes. These include the Cherokee, Tuscarora, Catawba, Chowanoke, Roanoke, Pamlico, Machapunja, Coree, Meherrin, Cheraw, Waxhaw, Saponi, and Waccamaw peoples.
*North Carolina is one of eleven states who seceded from the union to form the Confederate States of America. North Carolina was last to secede, on May 20th, 1861.
*North Carolina is bordered by Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and the Atlantic Ocean.
*The western region of North Carolina is home to the Appalachian Mountains, which are the largest mountain range in the Eastern United States.
*The middle region of North Carolina is called the Piedmont Region. Geographically, it is high and flat, with lots of rivers, waterfalls, and rapids.
*The eastern region of North Carolina is a coastal plain. Geographically, it’s mostly flat land filled with beaches, swamps, and pine forests.
*Trees commonly found within North Carolina include the longleaf pine, short leaf pine, and American chestnut.
*Forests cover almost 60 percent of North Carolina.
*The highest point in North Carolina is Mount Mitchell. It reaches an elevation of 6,684 above sea level and is also the highest point east of the Mississippi River.
*North Carolina has the third largest inland water area at 3,820 square miles.
*Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest lake in the state, covering 63 square miles.
