    Dedication

I dedicate this book to my two beautiful daughters. Thank you for your patience, your kindness, your unconditional love, and willingness to follow me to the moon and back. As your mother, I have taught you many things over the twenty-three years you have been in my life. In that same time, and with such gentleness, you both have taught me even more. There are some gifts I pray that I have given you and other God-given gifts I have helped you to cultivate. Near the top of that list, I pray that I have given you the gift of fasting. You have watched me through so many fasts and even celebrated when I was in the middle of one; you both said I do my best cooking while fasting. To that, I answer with this: When I fast, I must rely on God to do the tasting. We all know from The Shack that God is a Black woman who is a phenomenal cook, so I suppose it makes sense that as a cook, I shine while fasting. Jokes aside, this discipline is not one that is entered into eagerly or naturally becomes a part of your life. You must want it and work at it.

Special thanks to my daughter Samantha for editing this work. Since she was a sophomore in high school, she has been my go-to on any document proofing, including my legal documents. Thank you for your patience with me, Samantha, and by the way, I am still confused by the Oxford Comma.

To my baby girl Simone, who is so confused by commas that she can write a seven-page paper without a single one. Thank you for your expertise and creativity in helping me to decide on a title and for your vision for the book cover. Your make-up artistry and keen eye for the lighting used in my cover photo prove that the decision to send you to a performing-arts high school was money well-spent. A special thanks to you for baking the world’s greatest chocolate chip cookies, which kept me going through this process.

May God bless you both, much love.

    —Mom

Finally, a special thanks to my bonus daughters, Melanie Marshall and Rebekka Schaeffer, a part of our dear Oasis Church of Chicago family, where my daughters serve so faithfully. Melanie and Bekka are creative writing teachers who stepped in and provided the finishing edits when I simply could do no more. God loves you, and so do I!

    Foreword

Presently, it’s approximately 5 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. We are in the middle of a pandemic, and the world is facing a crisis unlike anything we have ever seen. I am entering the third day of a long-term fast: I am not sure how long it will be; it will become clear to me at some point when I have had enough. I have been working on this book for nearly two years now, and it is still a work-in-progress. As I sit in my prayer chair in the early morning hours, I come to realize something that I have learned over and over: God’s timing is not our timing. In giving us a God assignment, He also has a designated time for its completion. Rarely does it coincide with our ideas about how long the project should take.

Since the onset of COVID-19, we have been required to move through various phases of sheltering in place—a challenge to most. In this present moment, some of the restrictions have been lifted
