A Body of Worship - Kara Bruegger

    WEEK ONE

A Body of Worship is holy and a living sacrifice.

    Week One – Day One

    1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

Imagine walking past your local church and witnessing someone defacing the building with graffiti. What would you do? I don’t think anyone could move about their day without being deeply disturbed by seeing such a blatant act of disrespect towards the house of God.

The Bible tells us that when we accept Jesus Christ as our savior, the Holy Spirit moves into our hearts so He can begin his work in us. Our bodies become holy temples. Let that sink in for a moment. That alone should transform the way we look at ourselves. When we honor our bodies by taking proper care of them, we are honoring God by caring for His habitation.

Let’s go back to the illustration of those hooligans defiling the church building. It would be truly upsetting to watch such an act. Many of us would physically do something to stop it and even help restore it to its original beauty. Yet somehow, our culture of instant gratification and increased vanity has led us astray from viewing our bodies as we are meant to- a temple belonging to God himself. A world of busy schedules and convenience foods has blinded us from the fact that we are, metaphorically, painting graffiti on our holy temples with some of the decisions we make. Take your finger off of the spray paint canister and set it down. It is time to restore your temple to its original beauty!

We need to remove the blind folds that we have been tricked into wearing. I want you to hear this… You are special! Your body is special! Your body is sacred! Realize that everything you choose to do with your body has a consequence- either negative or positive. Are you vandalizing your sacred place or are you enhancing its beauty? We are in charge of managing this gift God has given to us- our bodies; the place where the Holy Spirit himself resides in all believers.

Before we move on to the exercise portion for today, please take a moment to re-read the Bible verse above. As you move about the exercises, allow your mind to focus on the passage. What are some things you’re currently doing that is vandalizing your temple? In what ways are you nurturing
