The way you read an IGNITE book is as personal as every story in it, and we give you complete permission to devour it in whatever way fits you.

What we do ask is, if a story touches you or in some way inspires you, that you reach out and share that feeling with a friend. Let someone else know how the story impacted you and use it as a way to connect and express your feelings. Stories have brought us together since the beginning of time and we want our stories to do that for you and the ones you love. You may find a story that you know will touch the heart of someone else, so we encourage you to share the book with them, so they too can read the story and receive the gift from it. Since our book is all about igniting humanity, we want to foster more of that among all of us. "Hunger cannot be inherited. Hunger cannot be learned.

For Hunger to exist, it must be ignited."

Certain moments create a common ground among us all. Similar to Ignite Moments, I like to call them ‘where were you when’ moments. Where were you when we lost one of our beloved presidents? Where were you when a preacher who fought for equality was immortalized by the thief of greatness? For some, it was where were you when a politician from Chicago moved into our nation’s capital with his beautiful children and beloved wife? Or when the Princess was taken too soon in Paris, or when a tsunami consumed a tiny island in the South Pacific? Where were you when the word ‘pandemic’ became the most Googled word on the planet, surpassing the words ‘God’ and ‘money’? Moments like these have changed us all, individually and globally, and have become like permanent cornerstones in our lives.

As you read this book, Ignite the Hunger in You, I want you to ask yourself an important question: Where were you when you recognized that the most important person in your life, YOU, was truly hungry for more than just a moment? For me, it was Thursday, March 19, 2020, the day of the first lockdown orders in the United States. There was a shortage of food and water, and believe it or not, toilet paper became more valuable than a Fortune 500’s corporate stock.

I had just negotiated a half a million dollar speaking contract for the family business. My father, Les Brown, and my sister, Dr. Ona Brown, returned from traveling in Dubai just one week prior. The airports resembled the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles during rush hour. As a family, we were grateful that they both made it back before the lockdown. We had no idea that the National Basketball Association™ and hockey leagues would cancel their scheduled playoff games and suspend the entire season. We had to watch as restaurants closed, flights canceled, and every neighborhood in the country instituted a curfew. Healthcare providers were becoming heroes, and my hero, Les Brown, who I have the pleasure of calling Dad, was more poised than ever to keep the spirits high.

Despite our international tour being canceled and our domestic dates starting to disappear from the calendar like the moon in the morning, not once did I see Mamie Brown’s baby boy panic. I was frightened. I was fearful that our family business was crumbling right before my eyes and that the empire that my father and I had built would forever be a memory.

It’s hard to put it fully into words whenever you have a ‘where were you when’ moment in your life. I felt that way when I witnessed my dad’s hunger to speak Ignite to a whole new level. Every day at noon, I walked upstairs to the third floor and got Dad set up to Livestream™. Every day at noon, he went live to inspire as many people as possible during one of the darkest chapters in human history. Every day, Les Brown’s hunger was on full display as he focused on what he was born to do — speak, motivate, and inspire. I wish you would have seen it firsthand like I did. It’s one thing when a prolific motivator shares certain valuable principles with an audience on a stage. It’s a whole new paradigm when you get to witness that same motivator apply those principles directly into the lives of people via their phones, iPads™, and computers.

My dad was more focused than he was frightened. He was more steadfast than I had ever seen him in my entire life. I will never forget his tenacity. I became ashamed of myself. I didn’t believe in our family business anymore. I didn’t believe that the opportunities would ever return to our family. More importantly, I looked at my dad and his daily Livestream as a useless effort — a waste of time at best. Our former life of traveling and speaking was over in my mind, and I thought that he was truly wrong in thinking that we would get to the other side of this world lockdown. Hunger cannot be inherited. Hunger cannot be learned. For Hunger to exist, it must be ignited from within. Les Brown was ignited by the chaos, the panic, and the hopelessness. He was able to look past the current circumstances and become hungrier than ever to create his future reality.

It wasn’t until December 24th of that same year that I was truly awakened, and the spark of inner hunger grew in me. One day before Christmas, my dad, whom I was living with at the time, called me into the dining room, and these words flew out of his mouth with the force of a Mack™ truck hitting a wall, "My son is a genius, and he won’t help me.
