Pradeep Berry

Before adopting his focus on philanthropy and outreach, Pradeep Berry enjoyed a successful career in finance and accounting as the president of Crisis Management for Financial and Auditing Consulting Services Inc., after excelling in senior executive roles with CIB Marine Bancshares Inc., Dina Corporation, and the Hong Kong Bank of Shanghai. Pradeep was also a senior officer at Charthouse Inc, a subsidiary of the Pillsbury Institute, from 1977 to 1978. He joined Heller, which Fuji Bank bought, in 1979 and worked there for 14 years. In 2005, he left a high position to look after his wife's health for ten years. During this time, they enjoyed traveling, attending symphonies, and spending time together - this time is precious to him as she was the most important person in his life. As he recounts, "Connie was a brilliant American girl, and it was love at first sight. She was born in Glenview, IL, and was a professor at army bases in Germany and France. More Than a Million Worth - Pradeep Berry

    AUTHOR’S NOTE

It was a very special gift in my life from heaven to earth, perhaps was sent or was born in Glenview, IL USA in early February 16. She was Miss Constance Ann Fuller, who later became a senior professor of English, Spanish, German, and French in the USA, after her Ph.D., MBA from the University of Michigan, and Undergraduate from the Carlton College in Northfields in Minnesota, USA. Was it a destiny? Created by the supreme lord to have had met a newly migrated Pradeep Berry from Delhi to Frankfurt to Chicago on January 15, 1976, at 5,15 PM and was picked up by my cousin’ husband Late Mr. Bhim Hans and was taken to his house in Park Forest, IL USA. Pradeep Berry was served Indian food and a glass of Shivas Regal Scotch by his Cousin Mrs. Bala HansDaughter of my Father’ elder sister or granddaughter of my grandfather, late Lala Durga Parshad Berry, a wealthy merchant in Delhi, Amritsar, Punjab and Bombay. He had died on October 27, 1969, after his wife’s death on August 17, 1969. Had he been alive, Pradeep Berry would have never ever been allowed to leave Delhi, India to either join the family business or strict to my Chartered Accountant Practice in Darya Ganj, Delhi. It is like a CPA practice. I therefore have high respect, love, memories, and blessings from Miss Constance Ann Fullerbut now Mrs. Constance Ann Berry since our secret love marriage on the afternoon of January 28, 1976, at 4.16 Am in the Chicago Courtroom. It was a wonderful love at first sight on January 24, 1976, at the Gateway to India Restaurant at 1543 North Wells Street Old town Chicago, IL USA. It was just a beautiful song cum gift from the lord when a beautiful young girl and a young boy fell in love immediately after two hours of conversation with her and her friend Miss Whitney Lombard. The rest is a history till June 23, 2021.

In my whole life, I always respected women during my childhood, and teenage years. However, finally, when I met my future wife on the evening of January 24, 1976, at an Indian restaurant in the famous old town in Chicago, IL USA at the Gateway To India Restaurant on 1543 North Wells Street at the last window table of the Indian Restaurant with her student and a friend Miss Whitney Lombard, I knew she would be mine one day. It was a beautiful educated young girl Miss Constance Ann Fuller, A Professor of English literature, Spanish, German, and French in the Chicago University in Chicago, IL USA. It was a wonderful first sight of love—the way we both had a wonderful intellectual conversation about our family, friends, educational background, humanity and kindness towards others, and happiness in helping others. At the same time, we both were very happy with being able to make a happy evening at the Gateway to Restaurant. The Head waiter Siraj Khan and the busboy Thomsas Cheri-an and the hostess Miss Dennise Ferguson went ahead to get them a Check and an Indian Tea on the house was a very gesture for them as a customer. In return Miss Constance ANN Fuller left a 30 percent tip on their check which was shared by Siraj, Thomsas, Dennis, three chefs, and perhaps myself. They also had a very nice beautiful white scarf on their wallets to make a small token to Miss Dennise.

I was absolutely surprised when I saw them going to get their valley parking in a Blue Volkswagen car with IL license plate CP 1614CB. I was absolutely taken by the license plate number: CConstancePPradeep, 16 is her birthday, 14 is my birthday, C is Constance, B is Berry. Oh, my lord please forgive me for any thoughts except for my life with my future wife, if it can be Miss Constance Ann Fuller. Thanks for the wonderful gift my Lord bless our life and happiness if we ever get married to each other. God was very happy and kind and both Miss Fuller and Miss Whitney were in the same table the next day on January, 25, at 6.15 PM for Indian dinner and it was the day we both decided to have a personal meeting at her house at the 1836 Lincoln Park West in old town Chicago near the Lincoln Hotel and it’s still there. We both were in love and we decided to have our blood test on January 27, 1976, at the Crawford clinic in Skokie, IL next to the Skokie Memorial Park. I would never, ever have imagined that would be the place I would have to take her ashes in her plot after her Cremation on March 3, 2015, at 11. 30 Tuesday and March 4, 2015 at noon for chapel of peace and her beautiful grants stone on April 10, 2015, with her name, Mrs. Constance Ann Berry. My most precious darling wife for over 43 years with her date of birth and date of death February 28, 2015, where I go regularly till June 15, 2021.

    PREFACE

Hi, ever read a story that put you on the edge of the seat and changed your perspective? Well, here’s one such story! It starts on January 15 of 1976 with a young Indian man on a Lufthansa flight Pradeep Berry—a trained accountant—was headed to Chicago from his Native Delhi, During a 5 hour layover at Frankfurt airport, Mr. Berry was already having second thoughts about the transatlantic journey ahead! And he sure wanted to get back home to beloved India, Only there was one problem… He only had $7 left in his pocket—not enough, by any means, to procure an air ticket back to beloved Delhi He consulted the captain of the Lufthansa flight asking whether it was possible to turn back and pay for the flight upon arrival His only move—the captain said—was to proceed to Chicago and then wait 14 days for the return flight So as fate would have it, the young Indian man would land in Chicago. Raised in a very strict atmosphere in India, Pradeep had finished his undergraduate education and chartered accountancy At the time, he was an extremely qualified professional in Delhi, and was offered many senior positions in different parts of India, along with other career opportunities However, a very senior school friend of his, a then professor at an elite US university had come to Delhi and suggested he move to America. So he began to see a possible future there. Now in Chicago, the young man was edgy and homesick desperate to get back to Delhi. He remembers asking a relative who came to pick him up at the Chicago airport if they could arrange for him to go back to India the next day. Not even dinner and scotch—on that very first night in America—would calm his nerves. He could only catch some sleep after midnight and woke up by 5 a.m. feeling panicky, depressed, and helplessly homesick As the popular proverb goes, the future belongs to him who knows how to wait.

Within days of living this quagmire, the young Indian man would meet a beautiful young American woman who would change the the course of his life—forever Mr. Berry met Miss Constance Ann Fuller at an Indian restaurant on the historic North Wells Street in Chicago It was love at first sight—straight out of a storybook From the first word go, the couple had a way of relating to each other. It took 60 minutes for Pradeep Berry and Miss ‘Connie’ to know they were destined for each other And days later on January 28th, 1976, Connie and Berry were happy to legalize their union in Court—despite no family members being present Barely days after he was itching to leave America and get back home to India, Pradeep was now married to an American sweetheart So much for expectations! In Pradeep’s own words—Connie brought happiness and a new passion for life to him. Although he had mentioned to her that he still wanted to go back to India, Connie requested that he see some parts of Chicago before he left. She took him to the Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium, McCormick Place, Michigan Avenue, Lakeshore Drive, and many restaurants around the city. Soon enough, his desire to return to India was distant but live ember! Although he already had a superb education in India, Pradeep was encouraged to pursue an MBA in America. Initially reluctant, it so struck him that education had no end, and that an American MBA would prepare me for more knowledge and advance his career worldwide. And this brings us to a critical phase in this eye-opening story! The coming of age of this young Indian in the land of opportunity! And the start of an enlightened career—over 42 years—that we can all learn from. Pradeep remembers the challenges he had with his first job, with an an employer who withheld his wages for no good reason It took the effort of his partner—Mrs.Constance Berry—threatening to report this employer to the IRS and Labor Department for him to get his full dues. Soon after, Mr. Pradeep realized that he was better off focusing on his field of experience So he took a job in the field of finance, where he had a formidable educational background. Within 3 months, he already had his first promotion…never to look back again! Due to his hard work and commitment—thanks to encouragement from his spouse—Mr. Pradeep’s employer paid for his MBA at an elite university. Before long, he was traveling across the country on professional assignments. It doesn’t take much effort to appreciate the contrast and gravity in Mr. Pradeep Berry’s progression. Upon landing in the States, Pradeep had been itching to get back to India on the round-trip ticket. He only wished to stay 14 days as he waited for the return flight. But meeting his soulmate seemed to change everything. The 14 days became 6 months. Soon enough, he had no intention of going back to India. Connie served as a key pillar of support for Pradeep during these first days, months, and years in America. Although Pradeep was already a smart and motivated young man back in his native India, it took Connie to bring out the best in him—and set him on a path of career and professional success. Soon enough, he had won the respect of his family members back in India. And his source of encouragement—Connie—had become the star of the family. It is thanks to her that Pradeep quickly internalized American culture, learning to dress, interact, and speak in a way that advanced his career.

During the late seventies and early eighties, Pradeep and Connie worked very hard to build their careers. Mr. Berry remembers that on Saturdays, although he didn’t need to do any work, he would get up in the morning and work on his reports because he wanted to master his field and advance his career. It appears, in Pradeep’s view, certain things helped him grow from a confused young immigrant to an executive senior management consultant in the banking and finance sector. First and foremost, a CULTURE OF READING. From the onset, Pradeep had learned from Connie that reading would stimulate him and turn him into an intelligent person. Mr. Berry says that his spouse’s average reading time was four to six hours a day when she was working. When she took early retirement, her average reading was fourteen hours a day. Well, for most people, this would seem like an impossible feat! Pradeep caught this powerful habit and improved his grip in his areas of interest. A few years later, he was writing articles for MBA students from top institutions across the country. He would write professional pieces on commercial lending, mergers, and acquisition. In the course of doing this, Pradeep learned a lot about hostile merges, how to set up companies, how to run companies, and how to leverage businesses. He recalls that thanks to his reading habit, he was able to pass over eighty professional development courses while working for different finance companies and banks, which were instrumental for career development. Mr. Pradeep also lets us know that balance is important. Outside of work-related topics, he would also read on a variety of interests: from ancient Indian civilization, Buddha, Shakespeare, the Bible, the Koran, Indian classical music, Mozart, and Broadway shows. This way, he also developed his personality outside of work! The second most important factor that we can learn from Pradeep’s inspiring story is THE VALUE OF EXPOSURE Right from whence, he was an immigrant trying to figure out his next step, Pradeep got lucky to be exposed to American culture by his beloved Connie. This would prove to be a precious gift for his career advancement. Pradeep would feel embarrassed when his lover would see him as an individual who was not well cultured. But he later learned that this was for his benefit. Pradeep argues challenges us to take initiative to gain crucial exposure in environments where we wish to excel Throughout his professional career—Pradeep has met many people—including his distant family members, who have refused to adapt to elements of the American culture And this is because they do not take initiative. Rather than spend their time constructively, they do their work half-heartedly. Pradeep shows us that it is nearly impossible to gain progression with this kind of lackluster attitude. In this made-in-America story, we also learn that WORKING HARD AND SMART PAYS Pradeep learned during his career progression that education is a constant, daily habit. That nothing comes easy in life. Although degrees have a finite point of completion, education, systems, and technology keeps on changing whether it is in banking, finance, or computers. For example, in banking, different structures have been developed for different kinds of lending. The author would make a point to learn about all these systems… Because he wanted to be innovative and resourceful. It is this very attitude that allowed me to have a fruitful career in one of the most competitive sectors of the economy. And while it is important to work smart and be innovative, Pradeep’s the story shows the value of DOING GOOD. One of his professional assignments took place in Ohio in 1987. In this case, a business owner had defrauded Pradeep’s employer—then one of the largest corporations in the finance world. Pradeep was working in senior management. He had sent many junior and middle-management personnel to sort out this particular case but without success. So he resorted to solving it himself. On a visit to the subject business premises, Mr, Pradeep learned that the business owner was in hiding, and he had left strict instructions for his employees not to allow any access to the premises or share any documents.

Bringing in his expertise in crisis management, Pradeep was quickly able to get the business owner out of hiding and sit down with him He was candid with him and let him know that the company was highly disappointed with his elusive tactics, leave alone the fraud. He made it clear that his employer would take severe action that the the business owner would regret for a long time. Within no time, Mr. Pradeep was able to turn this situation around. Seeing that Pradeep meant every word he said, the business owner agreed to pay his dues—although he had to sell all his assets (including personal ones) to do this. He even had to sell his car and house. Within a full year, Pradeep’s employer had been paid the sum owed which was a lot of money! But the business owner was stuck between a rock and a hard place. So Pradeep chose to do something special—he decided to help this very person.

He decided to refinance his home and find him a decent job. This way, a troublesome situation ended up as a win-win for everyone. Mr. Pradeep’s employer was very happy with his work! On a personal level, he had also been able to help an American citizen in need. Effectively hitting two birds with the same stone. Pradeep remembers many other situations where he was able to do GOOD while doing an otherwise tough job. He used these same tactics in difficult situations working in Michigan, Austin, Columbus, California, Seattle, Indiana, Baltimore, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and many other cities.

Starting from NOWHERE and ending up as a highly successful MANAGER in the financial sector, Mr. Pradeep shares his next to—an impossible story as an encouragement to all of us He was encouraged to come forward and share his trials, tribulations, and moments after the loss of his beloved Connie on February 28th 2015.

I also met My chartered Accountant buddies in Delhi India this time, they all were in Shri Ram college, Darshan Kumar who now has a mega store in Kamla Nagar extremely bright and had gone to Nigeria and now opened a wonderful mall Megam?? Moti lal Jotwani, Ramesh Khanna ( apparently died last year?? ) Sudhir Singhla, sorry to see him suffering from cancer in Bengali Market Life and death are?????? On the morning of January 15th of 1976, a young Indian man boarded a Lufthansa flight headed to Chicago across the Atlantic. This young man—Pradeep Berry—was a highly trained chartered accountant who had toyed with the idea of moving to America on the suggestion of a former classmate who worked as a professor there. But immediately the plane left the Delhi airport on its way to a 5-hour layover in Frankfurt, Germany, Pradeep had second thoughts. All of a sudden, he felt that it had been a terrible idea to leave his motherland India for a distant foreign land. By the time the plane hit the airport runway at the Frankfurt stopover, Pradeep had already made up his mind… He was going back to India! But there was one problem, He only had 7 dollars in his back pocket—not enough to buy an air ticket back to India. So as the universe would have it—Pradeep landed at the Chicago airport hours later, Promising himself to be back in India on the return ticket two weeks later. What Pradeep Berry didn’t know is that hidden out of sight, around the corner was a beautiful story that would change the rest of his life. A few days later while hanging out in the city before his return trip home, the young immigrant met Miss Constance Ann Fuller at an Indian restaurant on the historic North Wells Street in Chicago. She was a beautiful and intelligent lady and told him that she had finished her education from Carleton College and the University of Michigan. She was currently teaching while pursuing another Master’s degree in Spanish and French. It was love at first sight. He shared his background and let her know that he was set to fly back to India after a couple of days. But Miss Constance suggested that he explore Chicago and learn about the American culture before going back. At least that way he could have some real benefit from his visit to America. She took him to the Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium, McCormick Place, Michigan Avenue, Lakeshore Drive, and many restaurants around the city. Soon enough, the itch to go back to Delhi had faded and Pradeep was convinced to stay a lot longer and pursue an MBA in America. Pradeep recalls how that first hour when he met Miss Constance was a miracle, a golden minute that would lead to forty-two years of a happy life. As this story is all about! It was evident to this pair that they were soulmates—destined for each other.

The chemistry was instant! Barely weeks after Pradeep arrived in Chicago, the couple legalized their union in a Chicago court on January 28th of 1976. Pradeep remembers—fondly—how meeting Connie changed his sorrow, sadness, and homesickness. And how it contributed to priceless happiness to his life! Pradeep would learn how Connie loved classic songs from singers such as Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Elvis, Abba, Christmas music, Mozart, many symphonies. She had two gramophones and old records of singers like Cliff Richard, Tony Christie, and Ray Charles. And he became extremely fond of all this, gaining a keen interest as well. He came to love Broadway plays and the couple attended many shows together. Connie was also an art enthusiast collecting many artistic pieces for their house. She kept decorative art objects for the house, kitchen, study room, and bedroom. She also collected several historical paintings. She took Pradeep to see many art and cultural shows, expanding his knowledge and outlook! Pradeep’s wife and soulmate—Mrs. Constance Berry—would also expose him to a world of travel, planning cruises and trips within and outside the United States. He reckons that without her—he probably would never have traveled the world for leisure. The pair traveled to India seven times, exploring many beautiful places such as the Palace on Wheels, Taj Mahal, Jaipur, Kashmir, and Khujuraho. They say that a successful marriage requires falling in love many times over, always with the same person… Well, Pradeep’s union with Connie was the epitome of this! Through the years, they picked and shared many interests, learned from each other, and supported each other through life’s challenges. One thing that we can clearly learn from this beautiful story is to make good use of time.

During the late seventies and early eighties, Connie and Pradeep worked extremely hard to build their careers. Connie had completed a master’s in Spanish and French, studied at top colleges in Mexico and Spain, and taught these languages to the children of US military members in bases located across Germany, England and Spain for 5 years. She later taught in California before later moving to her hometown of Chicago, where she met Pradeep. While married to Pradeep, Connie would obtain a Ph.D. and further her academic career, eventually becoming a highly esteemed professor.

On his part, Pradeep took an MBA to further his already shining credentials as a chartered accountant—thanks to Connie’s steadfast encouragement. He started work in the United States and climbed up the ladder in the financial sector. Pradeep shares how Connie instilled the habit of making good use of his time. On Saturdays, although it was not mandatory to work, he would wake up in the morning and focus on increasing his knowledge.

Connie would read for hours on end—each day—on various topics of interest! This intellectual culture would be very instrumental to the couple’s career growth and fulfillment. Another major important aspect that viewers can learn from this the lovely story is the element of support! Pradeep truly believes that his success and career advancement were only because of Connie. She introduced him to American work culture, even going as far as to help with grooming that was right for the professional setting. Connie’s support was not only work-related but also extended to Pradeep’s personal life! He remembers one instance when traveling to Palm Springs in California.

The roads were very curvy in a mountainous region and Pradeep was feeling a bit on edge regarding driving. It only took a few words from Connie to get him to relax and build his confidence back. This kind of support would encourage him to become a very confident driver, and overflowed to every other area of his life.

Pradeep and Connie learned several philosophies from leading thinkers, leaders, and authors such as Swami Vivekananda and integrated them into their daily life. Yes—it takes a lot of courage and intent to achieve 42 years of a happy, priceless marriage! All of us—young or old—can learn a lot from this. Mr. Pradeep recommends that you have a bond of love, care, and respect for each other in your marriage. As well as full trust and honesty. And to plant your relations as we give water to the plants. These—and other crucial lessons about this extraordinary love story are also expressed in Mr. Pradeep’s book, My Connie. In the second part of this story—and a heart-piercing twist of fate a sad chapter rolled a curtain on Pradeep’s life on February 20th of 2015.

He remembers how his darling Connie fell from her bed at home—on this very fateful date He took her to a checkup at the hospital, where she was required to stay for longer despite her results coming out as normal Connie was to be discharged on February 22, 2015, but this would never come to pass. She suffered cardiac arrest and, after six days, and died on February 28, 2015.

Ironically, this was the day when the pair had been scheduled to travel to Sanibel Island. Over the last decade, Connie and Pradeep had hunkered here during winter—an escape from the cold and snow. It was inevitable that this trip be canceled—following negative reports from a hospital.

Selflessly, Connie had suggested that Pradeep go if he wanted But there was no way he could do that. He couldn’t even fathom the idea of going to Sanibel without her All he wanted to do now was to stay and be there for his darling Connie.

From an early age, Pradeep had learned that life is a duty and that this duty must be performed with happiness. Only that for Connie—it was beyond a duty It was love from the bottom of his heart and soul! And when love is involved this way—it becomes a purpose Pradeep remembers how Connie’s sickness had begun in 2013. This—and the strain it put in her—would be the pivotal changing point in their out-of-a-storybook marriage story. In the face of the challenge, Pradeep was reminded of Lord Buddha’s story. One day Lord Buddha—a spiritual leader who lived in ancient India—came across a lady who was praying to get back her dead son.

Buddha told the woman that if she could get him a bag of rice from a house where there had been no tragedy for five years, he could bring back her son. After going from house to house day and night, the lady was unable to find a household that was free of tragedy. This way, Lord Buddha made her realize the suffering of everyone on this planet. Mr. Pradeep had a great understanding of death and spirituality. But despite knowing that we have no control over death, he was not ready for Connie’s demise… Furthermore, they had positively shared that they would live to old age. Connie had a history of longevity and good genes in the family, with many of her relatives living to the ages of 90. Furthermore, she emphasized Good health throughout the marriage, She was careful about the diet, swam regularly, golfed, walked, and engaged in a lot of household and outdoor activities. Pradeep remembers how Connie kept her brain in shape by reading for hours on end. She even served as the president of his building association for twenty-five years and had traveled extensively over the years. Despite all this, the cruel hand of death had taken his beloved so mercilessly! Leaving him in severe pain… Like a fish without water, or an animal being slaughtered—in his own words.

Although many people told him that it would take six months to one year to overcome this painful and shaking trauma, Mr. Pradeep has had it much worse—all a sign of his true love for Connie. Pradeep’s pain is made worse by the fact that—he believes—there was medical negligence in taking care of his wife in her hour of need. Mr. Pradeep strongly feels that CPR was delayed and later only performed when he ferociously complained. And that he learned from medical records that Connie was denied her Power of Attorney. He is also troubled by the fact that when his beloved Connie had a Cardiac arrest, she held his hand and wanted to say something. And it bothers him that he didn’t know what she wanted to say. This terrible—following more than 4 decades of a happy marriage and companionship—is understandably excruciating. But in yet another lesson that we can all benefit from—Pradeep Berry shows incredible resilience and courage in the face of devastating loss.

Sharing with the world his true love for Connie, and all the immortal moments that they shared. Pradeep has authored 13 books,
