Romeo Loves Julia - Russel Ison

    Chapter 1

    The Past And The Present

Two young and handsome men walked up the rickety stairs of an old two story building in a derelict part of the city. They were Frederick Fontana and Steve Rossi. They walked towards a door which has a crude sign saying: Fontana & Rossi, Inc. The sign was so crude that Frederick had to straighten the sign just to put it back in place.

They opened the door and walked inside their cramped office which can barely fit four small office desks. Steve looked at the large stacks of paper that filled their two desks and their generally unkept office, It’s good that we’re getting an assistant today. We need a woman’s touch in here.

Who would have thought that our small business is finally growing to the point that we can now afford an assistant, smiled Frederick as he sat on his office table.

Yeah, who would have thought that the sons of two Italian immigrants would make it big here in this country, smiled Steve as he also sat on his office table.

Who would have thought that buying small percentages in small businesses throughout this big city could be profitable?, smiled Frederick as he put his feet on top of his office desk, I still remember us coming with this idea on our college dormitory.

Those were the days, Fred. Those were the days. Now, we’re both responsible businessmen who’re posed to take over this city. I dream of the day when the magazines of this city would proclaim us as the most eligible bachelors in the city.

With all the beautiful women in this city, smiled Frederick as he put his arms in the back of his neck, do you think we’ll ever meet one who’ll charm both of us so much that we’ll fight over her?

That would never happen, Fred. We’re the best of friends. No woman would ever come between us.

They heard a  knock on the door.

Who is it?, asked Frederick who removed his feet from the top of his office desk.

I’m from the recruitment agency, said a woman’s voice, I came here for the executive assistant job.

    Come in, smiled Steve.

The door opened and a beautiful woman with a long, beautiful and well kept hair entered, Good morning sirs, I’m Miss Dalia Brambilla and I came here for the executive assistant job.

The two men were speechless. They have never seen such a beautiful woman before. There was silence in the room as the two men gawked at her while she just smiled at them in silence.

I came here for the job?, she smiled upon noticing that she has left the two men speechless.

A-Ah yes, you came here for the executive assistant job, said Frederick nervously.

C-Can we see your qualifications?, asked Steve as he extended his hand to get the resume of Dalia.

    May I sit?

Y-Yes, you may, come sit here, scrambled the two men as each one pointed to the chairs  near their office desk.

The two men looked at each other. They felt an irritation for each other for the first time in their lives.

    Who’s the boss here, sirs?

I am, the two men almost said in unison as they looked at each other.

She squinted her face out of confusion, You two are both the bosses of this company?

No, I’m the boss, said both men as each one looked at each other with anger in their eyes.

These men seem to be confused on who’s the boss. But it’s clear that they’re both the bosses of this company.

She smiled, It really doesn’t matter who’s the boss, sirs. As long as it’s clear that I’ll be the executive assistant.

The two men calmed down. They both realized that they just lost control of themselves and even became angry with each other.

    So, when do I start?

It’s already Friday afternoon and it’s too late for you to start now, smiled Steve, are you able to start this coming Monday?

So, I’m hired already or would you still interview me on Monday?

The two men realized that they haven’t interviewed her yet for the job.

Oh yes, Miss Brambilla, right?, smiled Frederick, Can I see your resume?

She handed her resume to him, Here’s my resume sir.

You don’t have to call me, sir. You can call me Fred.

And you can call me Steve, he interrupted as he tried to grab her resume from Frederick’s hand.

She can’t help but scratch her head, "Are these my bosses? They look like bumbling idiots fighting over me."

    Can I sit?

The two men each pointed to the chairs besides their office desks. She decided to sit on the chair next to Frederick’s office table. Steve can’t help but to clench his fists. He grabbed a chair and sat opposite Dalia and right next to Frederick’s office desk. The two men looked at each other with anger in their eyes.

So, am I going to be interviewed now, Steve, Fred?

Yes, the two men almost said unanimously.

There was a long silence inside the office as the two men looked at each other and then at Dalia.

So, are you still single, Dalia?, asked Frederick.

    Yes, I still am.

Do you have by any chance a boyfriend or are you seeing someone currently?, asked Steve as he cleared his throat.

Can I ask why you’re asking me this, Steve?

W-Well, it’s because that the executive assistant job is very demanding. You might have to work weekends and late nights. It could be very bad for your social life.

I see. Will I be compensated for these extra hours and the weekend work?

Of course, said Frederick first even before Steve could talk.

Then, it’s all right by me. I don’t mind not having a social life.

It says here that you know how to speak Italian, smiled Steve, are you by any chance of Italian descent or an Italian?

My family was originally from Italy.

Well, it’s truly a small world, smiled Frederick, cuz I’m from Italian descent as well.

And I’m from Italian descent as well, smiled Steve.

Then we’re all from Italy, she smiled.

I don’t think I need to interview you any longer, Dalia, smiled Steve, I think you pass the interview.

I think so too, said Frederick.

Do you have a car, Dalia?, asked Steve.

    No, I don’t have a car.

    I could drop you off.

I can drop you off too, said Frederick.

If it’s okay with you, bosses, I’d rather go home by myself. I still need to do some shopping with my friends.

She smiled, These two men look disappointed that they’re not taking me home. They are definitely interested in me and might even be fighting. Too bad, they’re both handsome and look like decent men.

There was a long silence again between the three of them.

Okay, Dalia. You can go now. Be sure to come on Monday, smiled Steve as he extended his hand to her.

She shook hands with Steve. Frederick also shook hands with her and then she left the two men’s office.

There was a long silence in the office once the two men were again all alone with each other. They both started studying the stacks of papers in their respective office desks. No one wanted to look at each other.

Steve stood up and prepared himself a black coffee. He looked at Frederick who was busily studying a document on his office desk.

W-We need to talk, Fred. It can’t go on like this.
