There was a time, not too long ago, when an establishment change, paradigm shift, transference, permutation, or any multi-faceted, multi-cultural global transformation could only occur via the differing attributes of generational divides. The lifestyles and socio-economic philosophies of the Lost Generation gave way to that of the G.I. Generation. The Silent Generation relinquished its means, methodologies and mindsets to the Baby Boomers. Generation X expanded the parameters of the pantheon and created Millennials. And, Generation Z is poised to eradicate barriers, eliminate limits and (borrowing a phrase from the original Star Trek television series) ‘boldly go where no one has gone before’. Yes, previously, it literally took a ‘generation’ in order to effect a generational change.

Nowadays, in the era of multi-media, instant information and complete industrialization, our existence features dynamic and comprehensive systematic changes in a matter of minutes. Demographics are measured, altered and redistributed overnight. Economic rationales and social mores are originated and instituted almost immediately. New religious philosophy and creative theology are generated, followed in masse and defended with rigor seemingly every day. Approaches and arrangements, manners and mannerisms, customs and courses and rituals and routines are all standardized and summarily introduced, reintroduced, altered and reproduced often within the same email!

This prevailing phenomenon has effectively obviated many of the social communicative references that were once considered fundamental and indispensable. Gone are the days of the storyteller and the raconteur. The role of the apprentice, intern or understudy has fallen prey to the immediacy of speed learning or YouTube videos. Patriarchal prudence and ‘Big Mama’s’ practical treasury of wisdom and remedy are considered antiquated and passé. Even the mentor/mentee relationship has lost its perspective and its presence. We are, essentially, a generation of people acting, living and experiencing without reference or insight from anyone who as acted, lived or experienced before.

However, I was blessed to have some great men in my life. Some men who picked up the broken pieces of an absentee father and molded me into some semblance of an experience. Some men who, despite the redeveloping disciplines and the changing times, were able to pour themselves into me and I was able to receive them. Through the pastoring, nurturing, mentoring and advice of
