    DEDICATION

T his novel is affectionately dedicated to my daughter, Mallarie and son, Mark II. You are the inspiration for my perseverance. Remember, never quit and certainly do not give up on learning how to become a better more productive pe rson.

This book is also dedicated to young people who experience daily challenges in their walk with Christ. For they are learning to count it all joy as they go through each circumstance and trials of life, as their faith is in the Savior. We rejoice with you in all that God has done and will do for as long as you continue to seek Him whole heartedly.

    Philippians 4:6

Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

    CHAPTER 1

    Madyson Rose Leaves Home

L ike almost every other church kid, I whole heartily await my high school graduation. My graduation day not only ushers me into college, but a life of freedom. Classmates often tease me, simply because I attend church more than on Sunday mornings. They think going to church two to three times a week is absurd and farfetched. You can only imagine how I they torture and ridicule me during the times of church revivals and conventions. Mother, an Evangelist Missionary, grew up a church girl just like me. Around our house living for Jesus is an expected way of life.

My plans, once away from home is to experience more of the ‘worldly life’ as my former pastor often labeled it. I want to experience the club atmosphere, attend a wild house party, and stay out late playing cards. Being a church girl, in the Church of God In Christ, I have been taught, we don’t play cards; it’s considered an act of gambling. This is a no, no. My mind is made up to live my four years of college to the fullest. No longer will I be the square in my circle of friends. They peg me out to be square with very strict parents. Therefore, I live my life vicariously through my classmates and few friends I have acquired. Naively, my innocence relishes the stories they share during lunch and recess. My one true friend is Yasmine Thigpen. Her stories are always the ones that make me crave and desire a more normal life. As far as my sheltered world goes, Yasmine is a wonder of the world. She lets her hair down and has a good time. Yasmine could smoke a cigarette, drink a long neck bottle beer, talk to me, and shift the gears on her Volkswagen Bug all while keeping the beat with the latest tune on the radio. Yasmine and I have made a pack to be roommates at Tennessee State University. We figure having been friends since kindergarten, nothing should ever change. What I love about Yassy is she never ever comes down hard on me for being a church girl. Every now and then, she will call me C.O.G.I.C. girl playfully. I never judge Yasmine Thigpen. Over the years our friendship always remains strong.

Madyson Rose Moore, do you hear me talking to you? I have been calling your name for the past five minutes. What’s wrong with you, young lady? I didn’t hear you mommy. Listen, we have to pick up your cap and gown by noon today. Mommy, may I ride over with Yasmine? This way you can continue the preparations for my graduation dinner. Alright young lady, but you two be careful. We will mommy. Oh, and Madyson Rose, do not forget we have Bible Study tonight." Yes ma’am. Under my breath, I say to myself, come on graduation day!

    Six Years Later

I’m watching a rerun episode of the Martin show. This is the one where Jerome’s gold tooth has been stolen. Did I mention this happens to be my favorite episode? Doggone, where is my cell phone? I hear it vibrating. Hi mommy, what’s up? Madyson Rose, I’m phoning to find out if you’re packed. I am, mommy. Did you fill your car up yet? I have put gas in the car, and my luggage’s are in the trunk. Madyson Rose, you’re too smart for your own good, Mommy adds. I laugh because mother can be two hands full sometimes. You seem a little preoccupied young lady. What are you doing? I’m watching my favorite episode of Martin; that’s all, I reply. Madyson Rose how many times you have seen this show? Ma, I don’t know, maybe a dozen. Sweetie, I’m positive you can double that number, plus it will show again. Alright, you have my undivided attention now, I reply. She asks, Did you pick up the cakes? Yes ma’am, your cakes are on the back seat of my car. In the back of my mind, I am thinking to myself, this is the real reason mommy has called. She wants to make sure I have her Turtle Cheesecakes. Knowing mother, her crystal cake plates are out on the side bar awaiting the arrival of these desserts. Now that she’s confirmed, mommy tells me my little brother is already home for the Christmas Holidays. I know. Dakota called me on his drive home from school. Sweet Pea, have you made up with Trent Allen? No ma’am and we will not be getting back together. Madyson Rose don’t take down your standards. I know you have a strong mind, and strong will, but sometimes guys like Trent can be overly persuasive. Mommy don’t worry. I am not taking down my values or morals for Trent Allen or any other man. Trent wants a sex partner and I am not that girl, I reply comfortably. Listen, Madyson Rose, it does not matter what people say or think. I know when it’s time; my God will send your soulmate to find you. There is no doubt in my mind, Mother proclaims. Thanks, mommy, for listening. Sweet Pea just hold on to the promises of God no matter what the circumstances look like. Yes, my mother is a preaching, praying, prophesying, anointed woman of God. Mom is that daddy I hear? Yes, do you want to speak with him? Before I can answer my mom, daddy speaks into the phone, How is daddy’s little girl doing? I’m ready to come home. He chuckles and replies, And daddy is ready for his little girl to arrive. Maddie, baby, drive carefully and make sure to leave early, so that you will get ahead of all the morning traffic. I will daddy, love you. Daddy loves you too. Here’s your mama. Mommy returns to the phone. Sweet Pea let mommy get off this line, so I can prepare your daddy’s plate. Oh, Madyson, remember what I always say about haters and naysayers. Alright, see you on tomorrow evening. Madyson, we will see you then, good bye and get some sleep. We can finish this conversation once you get home. As usual mama never misses the opportunity to tell me there will always be critics and naysayers in life. Early on, I learned other people don’t have to believe in your dreams, for dreams to come true; you do. Romans 3:5 scripture reads, "What if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? This scripture tells me their unbelief will not deter the promises of God for my life. When God gives me His Word, and I receive it into my heart, my faith is what nurtures my promise. Nurturing the promises while working my faith, helps bring my promises to pass! It is up to me to stand on God’s promises, not other people or what they think. It is so, God will do just what He says. And time has nothing to do with it. What God says will come to pass.

Somewhere there is a love just for me. God has my Boaz, ‘Mr. Right,’ and nothing can keep us part, when the appointed time arrives. In the meantime, Madyson Rose is going to live this life that’s been gifted to her. Every morning I wake up; open my drapes to allow the sunshine to enter in. As soon as my eyes open, I give Jesus thanks for another day. Today, I am extra excited. My holiday break begins now. I’ve packed. My car is already gassed, and I will hit the interstate shortly. Dr. Wilkson told me return safely in the New Year.

The weather forecast is calling for snow by noon. My plan is to be out of Nashville, Tennessee and in Memphis by noontime. I have two big boxes on the back seat, cheese cakes mommy ordered. I locked the door to my condo, place the key in the ignition, and hit the blue tooth. Let’s see what tunes will keep me company on the way to Mississippi.

Yasmine Thigpen moved to Texas right after graduation. She grew tired of Tennessee, not me. I had to start medical school, so we said our goodbyes. It doesn’t seem like it’s been six years. It seems like only yesterday. Yasmine and Rex are expecting their first child. Yassy says they don’t want to complicate things with marriage. I can only laugh thinking how on the first night we moved into the dorm, Yassy taught me to play cards. The game was called spades. The next day we rode over to the Mall at Green Hills. Yassy told me I needed an outfit to wear to the club. Everything I owned looked to churchlike, so she said. That’s the day we met Rex Robinson. Rex asked Yasmine for her number, while we were eating in the food court of the mall. The two have been inseparable ever since. Rex loves to say he owes his happiness to me being a church girl. Yassy always say we went shopping to find club clothes, only she found Rex Robinson, the love of her life; and the rest is history. They had Rex Jr. on their first-year anniversary of dating. He’s my Godson. I have so many memories. Yasmine gave me my first taste of beer. It wasn’t what I expected. The beer was cold and very bitter tasting. Sometimes, I would double date with Rex and Yassy. Rex’s friend Champ Cobbs liked me. He bought my first wine cooler, which was sweet and tasty; a melon favor, I recall. Champ was handsome. I just didn’t like the fact he bragged so much. Yassy said that’s just the way of athletes. She’s wrong. My brother Dakota plays football and he never brags. Anyway Yasmine, Rex and Rex Jr. are supposed to be in Mississippi for Christmas.

The phone call interrupts Donny Hathaway singing, This Christmas. It’s Trent calling. I see his name on his screen. I press talk on the steering wheel. Hello Trent. Hi Madyson Rose. What is it Trent? Can I see you tonight Madyson? Not unless you’re going to be in Mississippi, Trent. You’re home Madyson Rose? No, but I’m on my way there now. Listen Madyson Rose, I love you and want to sort things out. I do not respond. Madyson Rose, do you hear me? Let’s work out our differences? Girl, I realize with so much going on, stress is the last thing you need from me, especially hounding you for intimacy, Trent admits. I finally decide to respond. Trent, I can appreciate everything you have said. The truth is this has nothing to do with dentistry or stress for that matter. I made up my mind at thirteen years old, that when I marry, my body will be the gift, I give to my husband. He will be the first to experience me in this way. I want to be your husband, Madyson Rose. You say this, but you don’t want to wait until our wedding day to have our first sexual encounter. Madyson now or later; it doesn’t matter, we’re going to be husband and wife, Trent yells. Yes, it matters to me! There’s about three minutes of total silence between us. I decide to break the silence with these words, Trent, you are surely a good guy, but what you’re asking me to do goes completely against my values and lifelong plans. Woman, I have needs. Trent what you are saying is understandable, which is why I am suggesting we only be platonic friends, and end things on a good note. I can sense the tension in his voice. Maddie, if you end this call without giving this relationship a second chance, I am never asking again. Merry Christmas, Trent Allen. You have and will always be someone I consider a good friend." Trent does not respond and ends the call without saying his goodbyes. My music log starts up again, with ‘This Christmas’ returning. Unbelievably, the next song in rotation is ‘What Do the Lonely Do at Christmas’ by the Emotions. Oh, great there’s a rest stop just ahead on the right. I click my right signal on, and merge into the right lane because the rest stop is only a ½ mile up.

I pull over at the rest area and put Bruce Wayne in park. Of course, I’m crying. Trent and I have dated for the last two years. I met Trent on a visit to Allen Chevrolet Dealership to get my oil changed. The first year or so things were great between us. We had lots fun whenever we were together. Trent understood the importance of me acquiring my certification in dentistry. It seems as if the last four months sex became the reason for all the heated weekly arguments. One may say, I shouldn’t have strung Trent along. Lord knows, I told Trent up front of my celibacy. The very first time we went out the conservation focused on my virginity and desire to remain abstinent. When I returned to pick up my car from the service department at Allen’s Dealership, Trent brought my car around. He said, Ms. Moore, I’ve been waiting for you to return. I asked him if something was wrong with my Camaro? He answered, No, absolutely not, she’s really been well taken care of. Well, why do you need to see me? If you will let me take you to dinner, I can enlighten you on why I want to see you, Trent answers. Are you asking me on a date? Yes, I am, if you’re free and single, Ms. Moore. I am single, Mr. Allen. He asked, Does this mean you will go out with me? Yes, and we have been seeing each other faithfully, up until two weeks ago.

I turn the ignition off, lock the doors and walk over to the lady’s room. After I’m done in the lavatory, I quickly wash my hands and wipe my face. Looking around, it seems as if I’m the only one at this rest area. It’s still early. I quickly return to the car as I consider my safety. Instantly, I begin to reflect on last Tuesday night, not knowing it would be my final date with Trent. I’d left the dental office an hour after closing. I texted Trent to inform him I would be late going home. The text said for him to pick me up at 8:00 p.m., instead of 7:30 p.m. He texts back saying, Cool, no problem, with three smiling emoji. As soon as I stepped out of the shower, the doorbell rang. I put my pink polka dot robe on and went to look out of the peep hole. I saw Trent standing there. I unlocked the door to let him in. Trent entered and kissed me on the cheek, before taking a seat. Give me about 15 minutes bae, and I will be ready. He picked up the remote and pressed the on button. I ran back to my bedroom and slipped into my clothes as fast as I could. Suddenly out of nowhere, there were two hands wrapped around my waist from behind. Trent was kissing me on the back of my neck. I pulled away from his embrace and yelled, Stop it Trent. Stop it now! Trent has this foolish look on his face. With his eyes glazed over, he asks, Why Madyson Rose? Before I can reply, Trent removes his belt. He then says, I want you so bad. Trent, I’m a virgin and my status is not changing tonight! He reaches for me. I run inside the bathroom, slam and lock the door. I finished dressing. When I step into my bedroom Trent is seating on the bed. With a look of disappointment, Trent asks, Don’t you want me Madyson? Yes, but not as much as I want what God has for me! Angrily, he yells Madyson, if you get pregnant, I can support a baby and you. My dad owns one of the largest dealerships in Tennessee. Girl, I am a General Manager and own the home I live in, he stated. None of what he was saying mattered to me at that point. I thought to myself as he spoke, I am determined to please the Lord and seek the promises of God, and this gray-eyed man had better stand down, because I’m not deviating one bit.

The sign reads welcome to Memphis, Tennessee. I guess my mind has been so preoccupied with Trent, that I had not realized how far I’ve driven. I recall Trent asking how can I be so restrained and unaffected by desire and physical attraction. What he didn’t know is it does have its effects on me. I’m human. Trent is very sexy as well as easy on the eyes. His masculine touch did get me heated with desire. Which is why, I prayed while I dressed in the bathroom. I asked the Lord to keep me and help me in my efforts to abstain from fornication and He has. 1 Corinthians 10:13 reads, "There hath no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able
