About this ebook

Every verse—Genesis to Deuteronomy—has been summarized and communicated in story fashion to help accelerate the reading of God’s Word. Volume 2--Joshua to Esther-- has already been published as well.

This book is for God’s people whom He has called to read His Word that have not fulfilled their calling. I also believe that for God to further show us who He is and what He desires from us in this pilgrimage called life, we must be reading His word.

    Introduction

The first purpose of this book is to fulfill the will of God, to fulfill His call to me. I believe He placed it in my heart and in my mind to write this book. I started this project back in 2007 and 2008, using my Sunday School class and a home Bible study as my practice subjects.

The second purpose for the book is for God’s people, in whose heart He has placed a desire to read His Word, that have not fulfilled that desire: My hope is that this book will facilitate that desire. This book has been written in a simple, story format with simple language.

This is how I look at it: I love the story of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus chapter 3. It was not until Moses turned to look at the phenomenon, that the bush was not consumed by the fire, that God spoke to him. I believe that until we turn to look at the phenomenon called God’s Word, He will not begin to speak to us. I believe that for God to further show us who He is and what He desires from us in this pilgrimage called life, we must be reading His Word. There are many others who have the same passion for reading the Word:

David Kasali, Christian Bilingual University of Congo (UCBC): He says, Our motto is ‘being transformed to transform.’. I don’t want to read the Bible just to increase my knowledge. I read it because it is transformative, and I want it to change me. It should change the way we live, act, and work and hence make us agents of transformation in our communities and nation. (from Rewriting Our Stories, by Jessi Strong, Bible Study Magazine, Jan/Feb 2015)

Dr. Mel Lawrenz, How To Understand the Bible: …knowing the Bible is not the ultimate objective. Knowing God is. Really knowing God. And knowing God via the revelation God has given of himself, not our imaginary constructs. This is exciting! When we commit ourselves to knowing the Scriptures, we are truly embarking on a life-transforming experience. And the real beginning is when we say, I believe …" (Cited November 18, 2015 online: Biblegateway.com)

God’s Word, Proverbs 4:20-22: "My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your sight; Keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their body".

I am so excited about this study. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it!

    Because of Him,

    Lynn Waddell, M.A.B.C., M.Th.

Bible translation used/cited in this study:

New American Standard Bible (NASB). The summarization is compiled from the NASB unless otherwise noted. I have tried to quote verses that are pertinent to the stories and that clarify the content.

This book is not a commentary on the Scriptures. It is simply a summarization, in my own words, to make reading the Scriptures less complicated. I have not attempted to perform any analysis for any passage, anytime. There are not any liberties taken with the Scriptures. I have done my best to accurately summarize each chapter and verse.

There are essential things that we must totally believe in order to study and follow the Bible.

    1. ..all flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades … but the Word of our God stands forever (Isaiah 40:6b, 7a-8).

    2. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16).

Each book of the Bible has a certain story, key verse, etc. For that education, I recommend a book by Dr. David Jeremiah called Understanding the 66 Books of the Bible.

There are other bible summaries available. The fact that there are so many out there is confirmation of God’s call to read His Word. Most summaries offer only an outline or a list of who, what, where and when. There is one summarization out there, that I have reviewed, that states that the stories of the Bible may actually be based upon mythical tales. Make sure that the authors whose summarizations you read are Christian believers and be sure their work is true to the Scriptures.

Dr. David Jeremiah, noted prophecy expert and pastor of Shadow Mountain Church in El Cajon, California, uses summarization, or dramatization, of Scripture in his books and in his preaching. Referring to his newest book, Agents of Babylon, Dr. Jeremiah said, …this book begins each chapter with a narrative, with a drama if you will, which illustrates in a narrative format all of the truth that’s in the chapter. And then we follow that up in the end of the chapter with the Scripture behind the story. The drama captures your heart, captures your imagination; and then the truth captures your mind. And when your heart and your mind are wrapped around the truth of the Word of God, transformation always happens. (David Jeremiah. Radio broadcast 10/2/2015, Agents of Babylon. San Diego, CA: Turning Point)

On the National Day of Prayer, a church in Birmingham, Alabama reads the Bible completely through in just ninety hours. It takes over 360 people to accomplish their goal. They consider the reading of God’s Word important.

    INFORMATION ABOUT THE BIBLE

    • It is not simply one book, it includes:

    History Poetry            Drama

    Biography        Prophecy        Philosophy

    Science            Inspirational reading

    • The Bible has been translated into over 1200 languages

    • There are more copies sold every year than any other book

    • In just a little over three years, a person could intensively study the whole Bible, one chapter per day

The Bible can be studied by:

Chapter, Paragraph, Verse, Book, Word, Topic Biography (and probably some I did not mention)

BOOKS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT and DIVISIONS

BOOKS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT and DIVISIONS

    Authors:

The Bible was written by many men over a period covering 1500 years. The last writer has been dead over 1900 years.

The Bible is the combined work of numerous men serving in various areas as authors, collectors, and editors.

Some books of the Bible—especially books of prophets—bear names of authors (Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Zechariah). King David is credited with writing many of the Psalms; King Solomon is credited with writing Song of Solomon, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Hezekiah, King of Judah, transcribed some of Proverbs.

Many books do not name the author. In these cases, traditions, Jewish and Christian, are examined as well as internal evidence of the books themselves.

Well now, have you had enough Bible knowledge for one reading? I do not mean to bore you with details. I do not enjoy them myself. However, it is good to experience something different as it pertains to knowledge of the Word.

This book will cover the first five books of the Old Testament, which are the books of Moses. Those books are Genesis through Deuteronomy. Yes, that means there will be other books coming in the future. Volume 2—History—is already in print. I will continue writing until I have completed the entire Bible.

    GENESIS

    OUTLINE:

    1

    48909.png

GOD CREATED HEAVEN AND earth. The earth was not formed. It was dark. The Spirit of God was there.

God said let there be, and it appeared

    (Gen. 1:3, 6, 14):

    1. Light—God separated light and dark.

God called light day and dark night. This was the first day.

    2. Sky/Heaven—to separate waters/seas.

    This was the second day.

    3. Earth—God created land and named it Earth. The waters He named seas. God caused grass and trees to grow on earth. This was the third day.

    4. Lights—God created lights to separate day from night, for different seasons and to make days and years. God made two great lights. He made the sun for the daytime. He made the moon for the nighttime. God made the stars too. This was the fourth day.

    5. Creatures in the sea—God made creatures in the seas and birds to fly in the sky.

    This was the fifth day.

    6. Creatures on the land—God brought cattle, creeping things and beasts.

    Man-God made man—and woman—that were a lot like Himself—in His own image (Gen. 1:26-27).

God told man to multiply and take his place of authority on the earth. God told man to have dominion over all other living things. God told the man and woman how to nourish themselves by consuming all the good things He had provided for them to eat.

When God had completed His work, He was pleased. Scripture says, Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good (Gen. 1.31a). This was the sixth day.

    2

    48909.png

GOD COMPLETED HIS WORK. Scripture says, Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done (Gen. 2:1–2). There was no rain yet. A mist came up and watered the ground.

On the seventh day God rested from all His work.

In this chapter, scripture gives us a summary of what has happened. God created man. Scripture says, Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (Gen. 2:7). God planted a garden in Eden, and He placed the man He made into the garden. God told the man to take care of the garden.

God made trees for food that looked good and tasted good. The tree of life was there. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was there. There were rivers that watered the garden. God put the man in the garden to tend and keep it. God told him not to eat from one, particular tree. Scripture says, The LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die’ (Gen. 2:16–17).

God did not want the man to be alone, so He decided to make a mate for him. God brought all of the beasts, animals, and birds to Adam to see what he would call them. Adam named them all. Adam was alone; there was not a creature like him.

God caused Adam to fall asleep. God took one of his ribs, formed a woman with it and presented her to Adam. Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not embarrassed (Gen. 2:24–25).

    3

    48909.png

THE SERPENT GOD HAD made questioned the woman regarding the rules of the garden. The serpent asked the woman if God really said they could not eat from any of the trees of the garden. She told the serpent they could not eat from the tree in the middle of the garden. She said to the serpent, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die’ (Gen. 3:3). The
