About this ebook

In George’s book, “From the Cradle to the Cross, A 365 Day Morning Prayer Devotional,” one will find God speaking to the reader through Scripture and the reader speaking to God through personal prayer. The prayers are filled with Praising the Lord for who He is and what He has done and is doing even now in the servant’s life. It includes prayer for Protection, as God is a Providential Care Giver. It provides prayers for Guidance of the Holy Spirit in our daily life and for the Power and Strength to live a life that would glorify God daily.

As I read George’s book, I first read a Scripture passage, the Word of God. But when I read the prayer that followed, I soon realized that I was reading the words penned from a servant’s heart to his Lord, Jesus Christ. Through our volunteer program at our jail, George was able to touch many inmates’ lives with the love of Christ. But make no mistake, his book is meant for each of us, not just for those who are incarcerated. For we are all children of God in need of His love and grace. George’s devotional is his personal testimony and his desire to touch others for Christ. May you be blessed as you read these daily prayers.

Author

George H. Brooks

Raised as a Lutheran in Brooklyn, New York, George H. Brooks holds a BA in Journalism from Texas State University. He is not an ordained minister, nor does he have any credentials in biblical theology. He is simply a sinner saved by the blood of Jesus Christ and the grace of the Almighty God. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a child at the age of 8 years old. As with any child at that age, he did not understand the scope of his decision that day. Subsequently, he entered his teen years and then adulthood unprepared for the onslaught of temptations Satan was about to rain upon him. During his life, he served in the United States Army as a Combat Medic/Medical Corpsman on Korea's DMZ in 1969. He then served as a Medical Corpsman in an Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam in 1971. His adult life found him succumbing to many temptations of this world and other sins that are offensive to God. While he went through these temptations, he was constantly reminded of his mother's faith in God’s promises and the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He always felt God had a particular purpose for his life but struggled to find his true calling. It took years of personal trials and obstacles before he allowed himself to be pruned by God so the fruits of the Holy Spirit could spring forth in his life. This devotional, “From the Cradle to the Cross, A 365 Day Morning Prayer Devotional,” is a testimony of his life. A life riddled with sin but found redemption and forgiveness through his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He has said this devotional could not have been written if the Holy Spirit was not present within him. While still facing temptations of this world, his hope for you, as you read the prayers in this devotional, is that you will come to see the reality of sin in his life. And how it may be present in your life as well. His hope for you is that you will surrender your heart and will over to Christ. And to allow yourself to become an instrument of God’s grace and love not only to yourself but also to your fellow man.

From the Cradle to the Cross - George H. Brooks

    Psalm 96:13 NIV.

[13] Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes; he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.

    108773.png

F ather in Heaven, Lord of all creation, you have given me the power to communicate with you in times of need through prayer. You have given me this gift to petition you for personal needs and intervene on behalf of others. Forgive me, Father, for not always using this same gift to praise you and to thank you for all the blessings you bestow upon me. You are my Almighty God, my Father, who cares about me and wants to assure me of your love and Salvation through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Lord, I need to hear your gentle whisper, the soft voice that through the power of the Holy Spirit guides me and leads me down the path of righteousness. Sometimes I close the ears of my heart and tune out your voice, allowing the voice of Satan to draw me away from your warm embrace to behavior and thoughts that dishonor your name. Surround me, O Lord, with an impenetrable hedge of guardian angels that will rise and defeat Satan when he beckons. Protect me through your divine mercies and endless grace, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

    Romans 7:18 NIV.

[18] For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

    108773.png

H eavenly Father, Lord of the ages, thank you for your eternal blessings. Thank you for the love of Christ that heals my broken heart, and that gives me peace to weather any storm that may cross my path. Lord, you know the trials and challenges I face daily. You see the shortness of patience I show in response to frustrating situations. You see the fear that grips my heart when I violate the laws of your scripture and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

O Christ, my Savior and precious Redeemer free me from the sins of this world so I can truly reflect the love and life of Jesus Christ in all that I do. Purge my heart from evil thoughts. Purify them with your Holy Spirit, so I may walk in the footsteps of my Savior. Let me be secure in knowing that I can rise above my sinful nature as a child of God. Grant these things, I pray, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

[10] I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty.

    108773.png

D ear Jesus, each day, I am confronted with personal struggles that are too difficult for me to face with humility, love, and compassion. Although confronted with difficulties in life that test my faith and loyalty to your Word, I cry out with the pain of a broken heart. I have failed you with careless and thoughtless acts toward others. I have not helped your children who struggle with unforeseen challenges.

Help me, gracious Father, through your infinite mercy and unending grace, of my disobedience to your Word. Forgive me for failing to faithfully live out my life in your service and failing to be a faithful witness of your Word to my fellow man. Restore me, O Lord, on the path of righteousness for your name’s sake. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I pray. Amen.

    2 Corinthians 7:11 NIV.

[11] See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point, you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

    108773.png

D ear God, it is with a humble heart and contrite spirit that I come before you to praise you for all the blessings you have bestowed upon me. Lord, you know the areas of my life that have required your Divine Intervention. You know the sorrow and fear that grips me when faced with situations I cannot control. You know the pleas of my heart as it implores you to restore my physical, mental, and emotional health. My heart and soul are ever grateful for your continued blessings.

I thank you that through your Son, Jesus Christ, I can have the assurance that you will always be there to meet my needs. Let me always be worthy of your love, grace, and forgiveness as I keep my eyes on the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. Make me a steadfast witness of your love and grace to all those whose paths I cross today, and may I truly reflect the life of Christ as I live out my faith in Him. F ather in Heaven, Lord of my heart, grant your mercies upon me as I go forth this day in faithful obedience to your Word. Send along your Holy angels as faithful guardians as I attempt to live a fruitful and blessed life that will glorify your name. I will no longer allow myself to be confused by Satan’s ploys full of lies and deception. Assure me that by being faithful and obedient to your Word, I will overcome any adversities that come my way. Instill in me a deep reverence and love for serving you so I may taste the joy of being one in Christ.

Unfortunately, Lord, this world has a way of turning your children away from godliness. Whenever I go about my day, I see people caught up in anger, caught up in wrongful behavior, and captivated by things that build a wall between them and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Your children are being deceived by the forces of Satan and encouraged to forsake the truths of your Word. Help us, Jesus. Let us take on the armor of the Lord to defend ourselves from insidious attacks on our character’s spiritual and moral fiber. Grant these things, I pray, in your Son’s name. Amen.

P recious Lord Jesus, hear my plea as I embark upon another day in service to you. Lift my heart so I may rejoice in love and charity to all those whose paths I cross today. Bless me with the spirit of wisdom and revelation. Let me see with clarity the truth of your Word and have the courage to proclaim it unabashedly to all whose hearts are open to your truth.

Lord, in this year and day in 2021, our nation was confronted by massive crowds of protestors and domestic terrorists who rushed the United States Capitol for the first time in our history. During the Capitol storming, our political leaders’ lives, including our Vice President, were threatened. Amidst the property destruction, several lives were lost, and many people were injured. Father, forgive all those people who perpetrated these acts of violence. Speak to their hearts. Let them be convicted of their behavior. Give all our leaders the spirit of wisdom and revelation so they will have no question of the direction and of your will for our country.

Father, let me be a Truth sower to those who cling to our society’s false teachings. Bless them with a spirit of love, forgiveness, and grace as they wrestle with the temptations of this world. I ask these things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

B lessed Father, Comforter of my heart, I come before you today knowing my heart is not full of forgiveness for those who have offended me. I come before you, bound by the shackles of fear that grip my heart and turn it away from doing your will. Lord, as much as I want to escape from this hardness of my heart, I find it difficult to shed this cloak of unforgiveness that keeps me from being in tune with your will. Father, forgive me. Lift me from the claws of Satan that seek to destroy my unity with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Open my eyes, O Father, so I may see a clear picture of your forgiveness and what it cost you when you sent your only Son to die on the Cross of Calvary.

I love you, Lord, and want to be completely faithful in my service and devotion to you. I want to reflect your love to others no matter what pain they have caused me. I want to have that spirit of forgiveness that refuses to be tarnished by memories that have caused me grief. I want to forget those memories, my Lord, and only focus on extending love, grace, and forgiveness. Even when my sinful nature beckons me to react in a spirit of unkindness.

Build me up, O Christ, with a love that seeks no revenge. You alone are the source of righteousness in this world that is full of deceit, wickedness, and all sources of evil. You stand alone as the one to turn to for guidance when I face the mayhem caused by humankind.

Dear Jesus, I give you thanks that I can always turn to you when I am lost and bewildered by situations in life that are of my doing and those beyond my control. Lord, let me be a vessel of hope and righteousness, an ambassador of your Truth to others that may not know you. Cleanse me from all impurities of my heart and mind that may impede my ability to touch the lives of those that need your love, grace, and forgiveness. [1] Therefore, I urge you, brothers, and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God---this is your true and proper worship.

O God of everlasting love, in your mercy, you generously provide all things I need. You know the needs of mine and the timing for which to provide for those needs. Let me be forever grateful for the mercies for which you have blessed my life.

Father, there are times when I cry out for the love and compassion of my fellow man, but no one hears me. There are times when my heartaches and the burdens I carry seem so overwhelming. And there are times when I forsake the promises of your Word and look to find the answers to my problems through contrived efforts. Lord, in those times, restore my spirit and my hope in your scriptures.

Lord Jesus, when opportunities for me to show love and compassion to my fellow man are at my doorstep, let me not fail to respond to the call. When I see the wounded plight of others, I often close my eyes. In those times, O Lord, open my heart, ears, and mind to do your will. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

    Acts 28:31 NIV.

[31] He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ---with all boldness and without hindrance!

P raise to you, O Lord, the Christ, and my Savior. I thank you for allowing me to bring glory to your name and for lifting me out of the darkness and into the light of your Holy presence. Lord, there are times when my attitude is a hindrance in my earthly relationships. Situations that should be opportunities for personal growth fester with ungodly emotions that cause discord and turmoil. In those moments, Lord, calm my heart so I can be a peacemaker. When I fail to love my neighbors as you love me, open my eyes and heart so I can see the goodness in all people. When someone hurts me, and I want to react in hurtful ways, I need to curb my tongue and behavior to not lose the bridge of understanding and love.

Grant me the wisdom, my Lord, to always look to you for guidance down the path of righteousness so I may remain in your favor. Forgive, O Christ, when I fail in my attempts to live in obedience to your Word. Assure me of your eternal love and forgiveness so, through repentance, I may once again be in harmony with your will. In the precious name of Jesus.
