Those who get their hands on a copy of Christina Cody's The Perfectly Imperfect Pumpkin are in for an absolute treat! The book's alluring cover art entices the reader, promising descriptions and images that encapsulate one of the best experiences of childhood in Autumn. It does not disappoint. With the assistance of talented illustrator Lowell Hildebrant, Cody pulls the reader (adult and child alike) into that moment of possibility that accompanies every Jack-o-lantern enthusiast. Using descriptive language and clever font choices the reader follows Amy as she searches for just the right pumpkin to give a home to. Amy ignores all the boastful whispers of the other pumpkins until she finds the humble, lonely, lovely pumpkin that is just perfect for her. Cody does a brilliant job of teaching young readers (and of reminding adults) that often times those with the greatest potential and the greatest need are often overlooked. In the end readers not only get to enjoy a book that is visually delightful, but has a moral that is relatable and important to everyone. This sweet tale of empathy is a must for any bookshelf no matter what age. So don't just treat the children in your life with this beautiful book, treat yourself and buy two.
