    ACROBATICS

The Vatican was gathering for mass as Gaius wondered to the hall early enough to find Cassius practicing combat with his teacher. Cassius gave a head kick and then a twist and a jump to do a spinning head kick blocked by the teacher. Gaius told them that was enough for one day as they needed the hall for their gathering. Other clergy members entered as well while the teacher Magnus ended the lesson.

They all wore red robes with gold chain necklaces and rings. They all greeted Cassius as he left the hall. He went to his apartment and read scrolls. His favourite was David and Goliath. Another one he liked was the story of Samson. He dreamed of a life filled with travel and adventure. His caretaker Magnus spent his time teaching Cassius the skills of a military soldier, mostly combat and survival skills. Magnus told him if he studied physics theory from Sir Isaac Newton, he could get permission to go to the circus coming to Rome. Magnus knew how that would motivate him. Gaius wanted Cassius to join the clergy, but Cassius had other ideas.

The day came for the circus and a couple of kids from school that Cassius was friends with went with him. There was three of them all together. As they entered with a swarm of people, they found a tiger jumping through a burning hoop. As they found their seats and cheered for the elephant and his mahout. The elephant went in circles as he performed tricks and balanced on balls. Then Cassius’s favourite part came as the acrobats started swinging and jumping from the roof of the circus tent. From that moment Cassius knew what he wanted to do. That night during supper at their apartment Cassius told his father Gaius that he wanted to join the circus. Gaius said tough profession to earn a living and you must be skilled beyond measure. You must prove you are ready then you may have my blessing. Cassius jumped up and hugged his father.

From then on Cassius practiced gymnastics to start and then stage acrobatics. The first few days of training involved running circuits to get into shape. He went to each station with vigor and execution. Magnus wanted to train Cassius to be an athlete before he started the circus training. He explained to Cassius that boxing is a great sport to play for conditioning then they would get to the circus performing. Reluctantly Cassius obliged. A week went by and Cassius grew impatient. He said to Magnus I have good enough conditioning we should move on to circus acts. To prove a point Magnus took him aside and said tomorrow we will see. The next day he brought Cassius in front of a tight rope and told him to walk on it. He said Serious? You feel ready? Let us see if you can handle yourself." Cassius, whose desire outweighed his disbelief went up the ladder and approached the tight rope. He put his arms out to balance and took a few steps.

He made it a few feet and started to feel his balance falter to one side and overcompensated by leaning the other way, then he fell and landed on the net. He cursed under his breathe at his failure. Magnus laughed and said, Still feel ready?. Cassius looked him and said, You’re enjoying this? He climbed off the net and said, Fine we’ll do it your way.. Magnus taught him how to wrap his hands and set punching bags up. He took a fighting stance against his punching bags and assaulted them with ease. His trainer Magnus held pads for Cassius to practice his jabs. Cassius worked on his breathing with each combo, one two duck as Magnus took a swipe at Cassius at the end of the one two.

Word got out to the military that Cassius was training, and they decided to join and give Cassius a chance to showcase his skills. A soldier approached Magnus and said Magnus, I see you got your hands full, why don’t we make it interesting. One of my men vs your apprentice. Magnus looked at him then looked at Cassius and said Dimitris, Ahh no no not a good idea yet my boy is still green were just covering basics. Cassius overheard and called out with pride. I can sweep the floor with any one of your guys. Dimitris bellowed a deep laugh and yelled Marco! a fit welter weight soldier approached and took of his shirt. Take it easy on him would yeah. Some of the soldiers took bets and called out who they thought would win the match Cassius jumped side to side on the balls of his feet waiting for Marco to enter the ring.

They wrapped their hands and came to the center and touched then backed up signaling the start of the fight. Cassius did not waste any time and went for a right cross that landed followed by a left body shot that was to be blocked. Dimitris and other soldiers yelled out Come on! Put your hands up! Cassius threw a couple of jabs, but Marco just dodged them with ease toying with him a bit. Then with explosive speed and power Marco broke through and landed a jab and a left cross and caught Cassius by surprise. He tried to regain his stance and it was to late, Marco was already ready for
