    DON’T LIE

The hallways were emptied as students entered the classroom and took a seat to begin the next lesson. An older lady who had been teaching since before most of the students had been alive was giving a speech about how the school would be shut down due to the pandemic and influenza. Now beginning May 21st 1917 classes will be cancelled and you are recommended to stay clean and healthy. The students cheered and a couple of guys high fived. Greg would’ve been joining in on the celebrations but he knew this also meant baseball would be cancelled. No one had a car so they walked home as a posse. I heard theirs no cure you just suffer until you die. Said Richard They got a cure for everything replied Thomas. Then Greg piped up and said They don’t got a cure for what you two Dew droppers have They joked on the way home back and forth mostly about how their going to be spending their time now that they were done school. I might not even go back said Greg. They all laughed and said he was right they agreed they wanted to be done school. Greg got home and waited until supper in the living room listening to jazz on the radio with his brother Howard. They liked to get updates on the war as much as possible. Suppers ready! His ears perked up and he ran with his brother to the kitchen table. They sat down and ate in quiet. I got another letter from your father. He’s doing well and he asked if anyone was sick. I wanna join them said Greg. That’s quite enough out of you said his mother But why not schools done for the year and I wanna help replied Greg. His mother retorted Your not old enough anyways you have a few years left. With that they continued to eat in quiet. A few days later they got a telegram, unfortunately bad news. They stood in the living room in shock at the news about their father’s death. Their mother cried into a handkerchief and the boys tried to console her.

    10 years later The Bronx

Greg and Frank pulled out onto the highway to head to the abandoned warehouse. Frank started blowing smoke first thing in the morning. I told her my business is legitimate it’s just not completely legal. Then she said we don’t have any trust. So I said just because I won’t give a 20 years old my bank account to use doesn’t mean we don’t have trust. Then Greg slyly replied. How do you got all that energy for a 20 year old. As they pulled into the parking spot in front of the warehouse they pulled out their guns and gave them a clean before putting on gloves. This ones been selling to our customers even though we gave him a warning so we just need to shake him up a bit. Frank said Then why do you need a gun, and who is it? Greg shrugged his shoulders and hummed and hawed. It’s for affect, to scare him a bit. He’s just some kid from out west. Meanwhile a vehicle with their hostage on its way to their warehouse passes by a sheriff. The sheriff radioes in suspicious activities as he recognized one of the drivers as a wanted fugitive. He decided to wait for back up. Then finally the vehicle pulled up with a man in the back who had a cover over his face so he couldn’t see. Greg greeted them then began pestering them about whether they were careful. Any heat follow you. To which one of the gangsters, Jack replied. we passed the sheriff on the way but he didn’t think nothin of it. Greg said back Good let’s keep it like that. Come on let’s bring him in and get this over with. They walked the man with a pillow case over his head into the warehouse and sat him down then tied him up with the his arms behind his back. From behind jack removed the cover from his face to see Greg. Hello Dimitri. You know who I am. You work for Capone said Dimitri why Yes I do. Smart to know that. Do you know why you’re here Dimitri? Then Dimitri replied, I haven’t done anything wrong. Greg shook his head in anger Don’t lie to me! I know you’ve be doin jobs from Atlantic City. Dimitri replied I don’t know anything I’m just a hired gun. Greg pulled out his gun and pointed it at Dimitri Maybe you are.. either way we need the message to be clear that it’s not safe to sell on our turf in Chicago. Dimitri cried in fear I haven’t sold in Chicago. Greg continued Don’t lie. Don’t you lie to me" just then a group of police officers showed
