About this ebook

Epic Tales is a Jr. Novel that expands on minor characters in an ever expanding environment P. Marcelo W. Balboa calls the Unworthy Cosmos. In it, he focuses on a young boy with a troubled past who is thrust into an environment both unfamiliar and intimidating. It is on this journey he is forced to confront his insecurities and willingness to push forward when everything seems to want him to fail. It is a story that delves into the questions, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ and ‘Why even try?’. It’s an inspiring book about one boys path internally and externally to find; himself and the appreciation of those who make an impact on his life, both good and bad.

    A WORD FROM

    THE AUTHOR

With my first novel completed that solidified the existence of my unworthy cosmos in the world of literature, I have worked hard to expand the reach of this multiverse. To me, it isn’t enough to experience this multiverse by novel. I intend to continue my artistic expressions through children and family books, script books, comics, role-playing games and so on. In the process, there are stories that are necessary to tell that don’t have a home. So I worked hard at creating this junior novel to act as a collection of all the stories that I have put away that exist to give life to the comics, script books and role playing games I have completed drafts of. Putting all these stories in an order that works while revealing important origins and evolutions of characters in other works of mine was fun. This book slowly but surely gave life and importance to those once insignificant roles. To connect them all, I put my perception of life as an adopted child in the story. I named the character Devonte. As a child I always felt like I was not truly a part of anything, and any relationship I had possessed an underlying truth that I was not privy too. I grew up in a childhood that depended on a hunch that I was not secure with any particular person as I wanted to be. I often find myself looking at the past and wondering why I wasn’t significant enough to be the one my birth mother chose to parent. It’s hard for me to say that I’m jealous of the way she seemed happy to replace me. She discarded me then went on to create new lives with separate men each. Meanwhile, there I was in a world I was so confused in and left to my own devices to figure out. But in that life, I learned that people lost from your past shouldn’t prevent you from opening up to new people in your present. Like life, relationships evolve. Whether it be from conflict, personal growth or external factors there is always going to be someone coming in and getting out of your life. The trick I learned is in this book. Keep moving forward. Experience or learn all you can from new people and appreciate the time had with the valued ones that depart. Disregard and forget the ones who are toxic in your life. Embrace the fact the world does not revolve around you and accept all life matters. So, give new people and places the chance they deserve. Devonte is that very existence, with the story adjusted of course. I tried to find peace with toxic people after my parents, through adoption, died. Don’t get me wrong, I will forever love and appreciate them, but they never truly melded into my spirit as inseparable relationships. They were, like many in my family, exceptionally good at reminding me I was a bit of a burden forced to live in their world. I will always remain grateful they chose to keep me when no one else wanted me. Which leads to my birth mother who I appreciate for the life she allowed me to have before she chose to abandon me. Though she let me know she intentionally discarded me, years later, I’m lucky she didn’t initially commit to aborting me as she also insisted was an option she looked into. That life in her womb that she didn’t want was able to grow up into the man I have become today because she didn’t act on her right to choose abortion. Thanks birth mom. I definitely made sure Devonte would be more than appreciative of the life he lived in after dealing with his own mortality, while adding an open to anything quality into his personality that would broaden his observations of his life as he lived it. With the creation of Devonte, me as a boy who felt like this world wasn’t mine while simultaneously unsure what my place in it was, I have something that is, by itself, its own epic adventure. One that leads to a newfound understanding that whatever should happen in your life, pause, and look around for the good. Then ask if that good would be there had things gone the way you wanted in life. I pray that you find a life blessed with things to appreciate in such a manner. Remember, life isn’t just about the experience, it’s about living the experience with others who enhance it for you. I hope that, as you read, you are lost in an exciting and refreshing experience that entertains you. Please enjoy.

    PROLOG

    DOMINO EFFECT

I ’yudan, a young talented inspiration to his peers, is focused as he breezes through the military obstacle course. When he jumps for a rope swinging above a shallow pool, he grasps the rope and swings himself across the water. After he releases his grip, he expects to land perfectly on the other side, as usual, but he finds himself falling through a blinding light of some sort. His fall is farther than expected due to the portal he falls through, but he has the where with all to catch his balance and land safely. He looks around and it is clear he isn’t home in the Kingdom under the Sea.

Hello warrior. I can see you’re confused. A firm established woman said.

I’yudan hesitated in slight shock as he broke out of a dazed state of mind.

I assure you I’m a friend to you. My name is Roma. What is your name? Roma asked.

I’yudan looked at Roma, startled by her and the businessmen around her. He took a moment to stand firm and confident.

Roma? I don’t mean to be short with you and your company but are you responsible for my relocation? He asked.

I understand your concern. I do. This occurrence is only due to the fact that you are the chosen one. Our people are in dire need of a hero. That is you my friend. Our prophecy states that one from afar shall appear to aid us in victory over our enemies. We believe you are that hero. Our prophecy says you are stronger, faster, and more evolved than the average life form. Is this not true? Roma asked.

Her accurate knowledge of him was uncomfortable but the sense she held the utmost authority lingered. He thought about her words for a second then realized it was all too much.

Look. I’m sorry. You have a powerful message but definitely have the wrong person. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to go home. I’yudan said.

No one moved. Roma was not one to be denied. I’yudan would have to do as she wished whether he wanted to or not. And he was sharp enough to recognize this fact.

What is your name friend? Roma asked.

    I’yudan. He answered.

Progress. Good. Roma began as she walked up to I’yudan. Mr. I’yudan. She began.

    Mr. Hudson. I’yudan corrected.

Please accept my apologies. Mr. Hudson, it wouldn’t be over stating the fact that our people’s lives are at stake? If you choose to walk away it will be with the lives of our people left with no guarantee of survival. With you gone they, we die. I… We only ask that you help us. We’re confident that you’re our savior. Just think for a moment. You leave without helping us and you’re fine. Nothing will change for you. But if you stay, you’ll be remembered forever as the one who carried us to victory. Countless lives shall be linked to this very decision. Lives that would have been lost will grow into families spanning generations who will remember I’yudan Hudson is the reason why they are alive. Upon your return home you will return to your normal life. Yet you will have solidified a legacy here that will reign true through the hearts of generations to come from now to the end of eternity. Please think about it. Roma said.

Her political career gave her the ability to do what all politicians do, that is, they motivate to participate. It worked. With a few words he was envisioning a life beyond death. He enjoyed the thought of a world that might remember him forever.

What do you need? I’yudan asked.

Roma had him escorted to their briefing room. Another well-dressed gentleman approached them as if expecting I’yudan.

This is our secretary of defense, Jon Mark. He will help you understand our military threat and perhaps we can end this conflict once and for all. Roma said.

The two men shook hands then went over a tactical strategy that was understandable enough for Roma’s fiancé, who happened to be hiding in her office adjacent to the briefing room. Meanwhile, Roma left the two men to get herself some well-earned coffee.

I should begin by telling you we were not always at war. We have a sister planet that was uninhabited by intelligent life yet could clearly sustain life such as ours. When our technologically evolved enough to explore the planet, those in power at the time sought to make public and private plans for the new habitation. It became a valuable asset for the rich and powerful who took ownership of it immediately. Our planet slowly became a supply depot and we the people worked more to help the sister planet evolve past us than we did helping those who still lived on this planet. Before we knew it, we were the planet of the poor and taxed slaves as the rich and powerful made their way to that beautiful planet they made their home. When we began to make our own lives separate from theirs, they attacked us with their new super military and futuristic weaponry. They wore tactical gear with spooky masks that were more mental warfare than anything, but they did scare a number of our inexperienced soldiers. Our planet was almost decimated. Roma couldn’t let our planet fall so she rallied a coalition of investors and built up an allegiance of supporters willing to put their lives on the line to stand up for our freedom. All may be lost had we not intercepted you. You can end this war. This is what we can show you about our military and theirs. From there, it’s all on you. Jon Mark said.

I’yudan studied the provided material with great attention to detail. Once he felt ready, he was escorted to a ship to transport to the sister planet. When Roma returned from the coffee shop, she looked over the intel Jon provided I’yudan then had her own conversation with Jon. A much more revealing conversation than what was provided to I’yudan. When they were done, she went to her office. She was surprised to find a gift placed on her desk from her fiancé. She took a moment to appreciate the thought as she sat behind her desk. Then her mood changed as she could hear Jon conversate with staff. She thought for a moment as she held the present in her hand without unwrapping it.

Linzee. Roma called over the intercom.

    Yes mam. Linzee responded.

Can you send the images from my office surveillance camera to my desk top monitor? She
