Edwin Nhliziyo

Born into a Christian family in Zimbabwe, religion never played a pivotal role in Edwin’s life once away from parental control, and things stayed pretty much the same throughout his life. After retiring from his job as a senior internal auditor with the UN Secretariat in New York, things however finally changed when he joined a small church in New York and quickly rose to the position of Bishop. It was then that Edwin immersed himself into the serious study of the Bible and, unfortunately, he did it with an auditor’s professional skepticism and this manuscript is the result of that study.

NO CHRISTIAN SHOULD GO TO THEIR GRAVE

    WITHOUT IMITATING JESUS IN BAPTISM!

    PREVIEW

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that

whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

    —John 3:16

The above scripture tells us that God so loved us that he sacrificed his only begotten Son on the cross to atone for our sins. The shed blood of Jesus on the cross cleanses us of our sins and from all unrighteousness. It is the blood of Jesus that ushered us into the new covenant. Under that covenant, his blood redeemed us from the curse of the law. It also sanctified us and justified us.

But isn’t there something we are required to do for these benefits to start benefitting us? The Bible says there is. The bottom line and I mean the unimpeachable bottom line is we have to believe and be baptized¹ for these benefits to start flowing to us. That baptism is by full immersion. Not even the Pope can quibble with that statement. It is unimpeachable.

Can we get these benefits without being baptized by full immersion? According to the New Testament, the answer should be a resounding no. However, under the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, the answer may be different, but always remember if the goal of your Christianity is to go to heaven, it is Jesus and the New Testament that controls that process.

By baptism in this book, we mean the only baptism we see in the New Testament. It is the baptisms of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Ethiopian eunuch. We know those two baptisms were valid in the eyes of God because He was present when Jesus was baptized, and his spirit was present when the eunuch was baptized.

So let me ask you right off the bat, have you been baptized?

We are also fully aware of a fake baptism in our Christian world. It goes by the name of infant baptism, and it is carried out by either pouring or sprinkling water on the baptized. It is fake because it is not in the Christian Bible. It is a man-made practice, and to all intents and purposes, it does not baptize.

So ask yourself the question; did I receive a fake baptism or the real thing? Chances are you received the fake one. If so, you are the victim of a satanic deception that has survived seventeen centuries. It denies its Christian victims the protection that comes from the shed blood of Jesus.

Of course, you can escape that bondage by seeking a proper baptism. There is no law against that but be warned; there are powerful forces and false prophets that will be agitated against you imitating the Lord Jesus Christ in baptism. In that case, you need to ask yourself why would anyone be opposed to you imitating Jesus in baptism?

In our prayers, we routinely plead the blood of Jesus for protection from all manner of satanic attacks. Fair enough, but does the blood of Jesus work for us even when we have not been baptized by full immersion? The Bible does not say so, but our churches seem to suggest exactly that. Some churches claim that if you repeat the sinner’s prayer, suddenly all the promises of God become available to you. Tread carefully here because as I have already said, the answer to whether the blood of Jesus begins to operate in your life the moment you repeat the sinner’s prayer is no despite all the lies to the contrary. That, unfortunately, happens to be the challenge of this book.

NO CHRISTIAN SHOULD GO TO THEIR GRAVE

    WITHOUT IMITATING JESUS IN BAPTISM!

    INTRODUCTION

    49139.png

    A Preamble:

    Baptizo—Which Baptism?

The following takes place during a televised panel discussion about baptism. Five people including the moderator, Trevor Morris, forty-five years old, host of the Trevor Morris Radio Show, an evangelical radio, and TV show participate in this discussion.

In the Christian world we have two competing baptisms, says Trevor, opening the panel discussion, which baptism should we be following?

There is only one baptism in the New Testament, Professor Robert Miller, forty-seven says, and that is the baptism of Jesus.

And as you correctly pointed out off stage, that baptism was by full immersion, Trevor adds.

We do recognize that baptism, Terry McKinley, thirty-two years old, a Catholic says, but we also use infant baptism by pouring or sprinkling.

But there is no biblical support for those other baptisms, Prof. Miller counters, how can you support what is truly a man-made baptism?

Not only is there no biblical support, Lucy Snyder, a seminarian, says, the verb to baptize comes from the Greek word baptizo, which means to dip into the water. That is the meaning the word had to Jesus and his disciples, and therefore that is the only meaning that counts. Everything else is fiction, and totally fake.

But over the centuries the word has also come to mean infant baptism, sprinkling and pouring as well as baptism by full immersion. Tom Manning, a Lutheran says, so when we speak of baptism in the Christian context, those other two baptisms are included.

Yes, Terry says, we tend to give more weight to our own church traditions when it comes to baptism.

But according to my notes here, Trevor says, infant baptism did not enter the Church until AD 1311, how were people baptized from the time of Jesus to AD 1311?

The Didache is a good source of Catholic practices in baptism, and that manuscript was written sometime during the first century, Terry says.

    Written by who?

Nobody knows by who, Terry answers, but the Church considers it reliable.

That does not change what Jesus meant by saying we should believe and be baptized though, Lucy says, he meant we should be baptized the way he showed us how. He is our example.

Maybe I should ask you, Professor Miller, what baptism means to you personally? Trevor says.

It is someone being dipped into water in a Christians ritual of baptism in the manner of John the Baptist that is associated with the baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ and is therefore unimpeachable, Professor Miller says.

How about you Terry, Trevor asks.

I agree with the professor, but as I pointed out already, baptism today includes infant baptism, pouring and sprinkling as well, Terry says.

But can you, in all honesty, say, as the professor and the others have said, that your approach is unimpeachable in the eyes of God? Trevor asks.

In terms of our Catholic tradition, Terry says, yes, it is unimpeachable.

But that is not the standard, Lucy says, the standard is what Jesus taught and practiced.

We believe our traditions are equal, if not superior, and above the Bible, Terry says.

If that is your answer, Lucy says, how can you claim to be a Christian denomination when the simplicity of Christianity is based on Jesus and the Bible and sola scriptura.

    Exactly, Professor Miller says.

So how do we reconcile these two opposing views on baptism, Trevor says to Terry, your view is there are other acceptable baptisms?

    Yes—, Terry says.

But there is only one that baptizes you into Jesus Christ, Professor Miller says, and that is the one that involves being dipped into water or imitating Jesus in baptism.

So, Trevor asks, why are there so many Christian denominations that do not follow the Jesus model in baptism?

That’s the mystery we are trying to dissect, Miller says.

The fear is the devil might be behind this departure from sound scripture, and the Bible is clear that anyone who opposes God is of the devil, Lucy says.

You are not suggesting satanic influences behind these alternative baptisms, are you? Trevor asks.

That’s the fear as I said, Professor Miller says. It should also be the fear of the many Christians who think the way I do. If you know with 100 percent confidence that there is a baptism that saves, a baptism that has God’s seal of approval, why would you look for an alternative that does not offer the same degree of confidence?

That’s it, Lucy says, unless the devil is behind it all, of course!

Could be a question of convenience, Tom Manning, the Lutheran chimes in.

    Convenience for who, Miller asks.

For the priesthood, who else? Tom says.

It could be for the believer as well, Terry says.

Jesus walked seventy miles to get baptized by John, Trevor says.

Meaning it’s never been about the convenience of the believer— Lucy says.

Exactly, Miller says, "look, we have the words of the master himself in his last days on earth, ‘Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved,’2 and all of us at this table know which baptism the master was talking about."

The words are clear, Lucy says, "which leads to the question, who but the devil himself would want something else? Remember, Jesus promised us a Helper who would ‘teach us all things and bring to remembrance all’3 Jesus had said, and he delivered on his promise. The Helper came on Pentecost, which means Jesus kept his word. That is how we know Jesus honors his word. He can be trusted."

Makes sense, Trevor said, Is anyone here in any doubt what Jesus meant by baptism though?

    Not me, Miller says.

Same here, and I keep asking my Catholic colleagues, why even debate the issue, Lucy said, you are either with Jesus or against him. And the reality is while Robert and I can say with 100 percent certainty if the Bible is real and the Jesus story is true, anyone who believes and imitates Jesus in baptism is indeed a true born-again Christian. The Catholic pope cannot say the same thing about his people and their baptism.

That’s a bold statement to make, Terry shoots back.

Maybe, Miller says, but you have to admit there is nothing about infant baptism, pouring and sprinkling in the New Testament, and the story of Christianity is the story of Jesus Christ and the New Testament, not the Roman Catholic Church.

    49144.png

This book outlines what I have come to understand and believe to be the true meaning of born-again Christianity. I have tried as best I can to base every argument I make on the Bible and the Bible alone. No church doctrines or traditions are allowed to enter the arguments that follow.

If I agree with the leaders of the sixteenth-century Reformation in the Christian Church about anything at all, it is about sola scriptura, the principle that the Bible is the inspired word of God⁴ and therefore the only infallible source of scripture. The Catholics short-circuited this important message by making their pope also infallible, just like God. In their thinking, this elevated their own doctrine and traditions to a level equal to, if not superior to, God’s word.

I am comfortable with my reading and understanding of the Bible, both of which confirm to me that a true Christian after accepting Jesus needs to repent and be baptized⁵ and thereafter live a holy life within the bounds set by God’s free gift of grace⁶.

According to my reading of the Bible, the only baptism that is unimpeachable is the one we see in the Bible when John the Baptist baptized the Lord Jesus Christ or when Phillip baptized the Ethiopian eunuch. Anything else does lead to various degrees of impurity as Satan can enter the practice at any point to corrupt it. Baptisms based on the Didache are therefore suspect for this very reason. They cause us to ask the question, Do these baptisms represent departures from the baptism of the New Testament, and if so, are they inspired by God or by the devil?

The truth of our religion regarding the transformative event of baptism seems to hang on the true meaning of the word to baptize. All agree that the word comes from the Greek word baptizo which means to immerse or dip into the water. All agree that this is the meaning Jesus and his disciples attached to the word when they said we should believe and be baptized. Yet the Christian church has managed to make us believe that there is, in addition to this, other baptisms that exclude baptizo.

    Could they be right?

A related question is since these new practices are not in the Bible, should it turn out that they are not acceptable to God, what then is the eternal fate of all Christians who have not been properly baptized? Remember, if God does not accept these man-made baptisms, that would mean Catholics and all those baptized in the Catholic tradition are victims of a seventeenth-century old deception instigated by a handful of apostate Catholic bishops under Constantine in the fourth century.

There was no personal benefit for these men to depart from proper doctrine and practices in baptism. But there was fear, a fear of persecution, the likes of which had gone on for three centuries; it was a fear of recent events during the Diocletian persecution that had seen popes and bishops excommunicated or martyred.

As for the church in Rome, however, there was the allure of palaces, peaceful coexistence and progress held out by Constantine to the Church. His can therefore be seen as the true carrot-and-the-stick approach in the emperor’s mission to tame the Christian church.

The Bible tells us the only force that opposes God is Satan himself. That is why we have our doubts that these departures from Christian orthodoxy may be devil inspired. Here is a clear case where God in the flesh showed us a baptism that is acceptable to him, and the moment he departed, we rejected his example in favor of a practice that might well be the foundation stone of the devil’s grand deception (i.e., the hijacking of the Christian church).

The reality is if you asked many Christians today if they have been baptized, they will all answer yes even though most have never been dipped into the water. That means the word baptize itself has been corrupted. Some of these people are the brightest business minds, doctors, PhDs, and other members of our intelligentsia. You cannot help sitting there and wondering if they have ever taken the time to read the Bible and understand that baptism by full immersion is the only baptism of the New Testament. How do you continue to follow the advice by today’s standards, of an otherwise ignorant fourth-century bishopry that lacked the advantages we enjoy today of computers and other research aids that facilitate our Christian work?

Today we can research and cross-check facts with ease.

As I mentioned before, the baptism of the pope in Rome is based on a man-made baptism that is not found anywhere in the New Testament. That alone is sufficiently disqualifying in my view.

God is on record as saying we worship him in vain when we follow man-made rules instead of God’s law. Are these people who have not been properly baptized aware they might be victims of a satanic deception? How do these people sit there as titans of industry, leaders in the professions but fail to grasp such a simple truth as that? It is just like those hapless children in the movie The Pied Piper who perished when they ignorantly followed the Piper. Pagan Christians will also perish if they continue to follow their Pied Piper, the Church, on the issue of baptism. It is true that in our case, the Pied Piper is someone we know and trust—the Church, but that is no excuse for following blindly.

What should we attribute this acquiescence to?

The simple answer is satanic deception.

We have already seen that the word baptizo has been corrupted to mean something other than what it meant to Jesus and his disciples. That is why Christians today will answer yes to the question have you been baptized even when we know a good percentage of them have never been dipped into the water the way Jesus was.

Are they victims of the deception?

In simple terms, when the Church uses the word to baptize to mean what it does not mean, it is deception. Let me ask you again right off the bat, Have you been deceived, and if so, what are you going to do about it? I am sure you know the answer to that question. So what is stopping you? What is this force that is preventing you from imitating Jesus in baptism? It is quite simply the Church because all churches that imitate Jesus in baptism do not face any resistance from their followers.

On this issue, therefore, the Church is the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The Lord Jesus Christ says to us those who believe and are baptized will be saved. The sentence can only have two possible meanings. You are either saved or you are not saved. If you believe in Jesus and his message and you have been baptized (not fake baptized), you will be saved. That cannot be disputed. But if you believe but you do not proceed to baptism by full immersion, doesn’t that mean you have not completed the conversion process? Doesn’t that also mean you are not saved? That means those who attach any other meaning to what the Lord Jesus Christ said and showed by example in terms of baptism can only do so at their own peril.

Jesus also introduced a new term into our consciousness. He said unless we are born again of water and the spirit, we cannot enter the kingdom of God. One wishes Jesus had gone further and linked this directly to baptism because the gap he left ajar has allowed false prophets to thrive by denying that born of water, and the spirit is the same thing as baptism by full immersion. We are therefore left to link the two together through the work and words of John the Baptist who taught that he who would come after him would baptize (read immerse or dip into water) with the spirit and fire.

Baptize here means what it means (i.e., being dipped into the water). The fire and the Spirit here are associated with the Holy Ghost (the spirit), which comes and indwells us when we are being baptized (dipped into water). This aspect of baptism did not manifest that clearly until Jesus Christ had returned to heaven and sent us the Helper. Even then, the water baptism was still required, and the apostle Peter made that clear when he said, Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.

The evidence that I am correct about this can be seen in Jesus’s baptism. All these elements, the spirit, the fire, and the water were present even though we cannot see the other two with our own naked eyes. Jesus was baptized by full immersion in the Jordan River, and when he emerged from the water, the heavens opened, the spirit of God descended like a dove and rested upon him. The voice of God thundered, This is my son in whom I am well pleased.

The presence of God when we are baptized is what enables the supernatural mystery that transforms us into born-again Christians to take place. The church calls this a sacrament that allows the spirit of God to come and indwell us. I believe that the power of standing in water during baptism prevents any interference by the prince of this world, the devil, with our baptism. Without water, the devil can prevent the Holy Spirit from coming and indwelling us, just as he did in Daniel 10 with the prince of the kingdom of Persia.

Is there another formula that allows this sacrament to happen without standing in (running) water? With God, anything is possible. We see instances of people receiving the Holy Spirit before they were baptized, but in each of these cases, one or more of the apostles was present, thereby repelling any satanic influences just as standing in water does. In any case, baptism by full immersion is the only surefire baptism that the Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated to us when he was baptized.

We, therefore, should imitate Jesus in baptism if for no other reason than that he is our example. Some churches now use baptismal pools as a stand-in for the river or running water. I doubt there is anything to disqualify one being baptized in a baptismal pool so long as water flows in and drains out during baptism. You do not want your sins and mine to get mixed up together in there, do you? This is just my view based on the need for our sins to be washed away. That, in my view, maintains the integrity of the washing away aspect of the process.

The church I want to belong to is, therefore, one that teaches this one message—baptism is by full immersion in (running) water. Once we do this, we are assured with 100 percent certainty that we have entered that exclusive club of born-again Christians, the royal priesthood. We now qualify to describe ourselves as new creations in Christ Jesus. The old man in us has passed away through baptism.

It is at this point, and at this point alone, that our faith in Jesus and our baptism by full immersion bestow on us the many privileges that flow from the shed blood of Jesus, according to the Bible. These include (1) our sins are forgiven; (2) the spirit of God comes and indwells us; (3) we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We are now in Christ; (4) we use our faith in Jesus Christ to do a myriad of things, like plead his blood, call on his name, etc.; (5) we are strengthened by Jesus; (6) we worship Him in the spirit and in truth; (7) all weapons formed against us will not prevail; (8) he supplies all our needs in Christ Jesus; (9) we are not anxious about anything, but through prayer, supplication with thanksgiving, we can present our requests to God; and (10) by his stripes, we are healed and so on.

Need I go further listing all the many benefits baptism brings us?

The Christian deception we are dealing with is based on the lie that all these benefits automatically accrue to us even when we have not imitated Christ in baptism. That is not what the Bible teaches. The list of benefits that flow from imitating Jesus in baptism is long, and I am sure you can come up with more, but my purpose for having this here is to remind you that if I am correct, the possibility that Christians who have not followed Jesus in baptism might not be eligible for any of God’s blessings is real.

    Why?

Because you have forsaken God’s law for man-made rules even in baptism. While all that remains for a Christian who has gone through the ritual of a proper baptism to enter the kingdom of God is to obey Him, for those who have not done so, they remain in the dark. Obedience for the born-again Christian is a day-to-day challenge no doubt, but one knows that when they repeat the Lord’s Prayer before bed, all their sins are forgiven. That is just but one of the Bible promises we have as Christians, that is, if you have gone through a proper baptism. For those who have relied on non-biblical baptisms, the prospect remains that they are still under the law of Moses.

Some will argue that being born again has nothing to do with baptism in the original sense of the word. These people are many and powerful and are led by none other than the pope in Rome, who himself was never baptized in Jesus’s sense. They have redefined baptism to mean what they want it to mean as opposed to what it meant to Jesus and his disciples. They have many followers, and you will be surprised to learn that many protestant denominations also follow this Catholic tradition in baptism.

These people do not see the possibility of any deception in the practice at all despite the warning by the Lord Jesus that we worship him in vain when we follow man-made rules. This book is meant for these people. To these people I say, open your eyes and see! At the very least, imitate Jesus in baptism to effectuate God’s offer of salvation. You will no doubt agree there is no law against imitating Jesus in baptism. There is also no harm at all in doing so; the question as before is what’s stopping you?

The Lord Jesus Christ is the founder of our Christian church. He said in remarkably simple terms "unless we are born again of water and the Spirit, we cannot enter the kingdom of God."⁹ Those who think like I do that Jesus was truthful and meant what he said will take Jesus up at his word. There are many different interpretations of this verse, but my own interpretation is unequivocal because we see Jesus being baptized and associate the word baptism with what we see.

The Christian Research Institute, on whose articles and writings I have relied for basic information on baptism, says this interpretation has merit since it is found within the historical context of familiarity with the baptism of John and previous references to the coming spiritual baptism by the Messiah (e.g., John 1:33). In this case, Jesus would be saying the Pharisees should accept John’s message of repentance and baptism to prepare for the Messiah, who would then give them the Holy Spirit.¹⁰

People like me will, therefore, refuse to take chances with our eternal destination by buying into religious doctrines, traditions, and practices that introduce, subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, departures from what Jesus taught, both by his word and by his example. Let all of Christianity resolve to be baptized in (running) water in the name of (God) the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit because that is what he taught us by his example and also by the example of his disciples.

    Amen!
