LIQUIDS
40020.pngCHAPTER 1
First stop, career day!
Garbage lies adrift in the universe, dispensed by a passing spacecraft. Amongst the trash floated pets, thought long dead before. Ripping along comes an asteroid, hitting the pile of trash that was motionless in the vast cold of space. Knocking the pets towards a planet covered in fluid, this is where it starts. However, the story takes thousands of years to evolve.
Slush, swash and sputter, I quickly shoot through the Fizzion tube towards my new career. Destination coming up, I begin to prepare myself for a harsh landing. Amazed by the science the tubes utilize, separating the francium from the exterior liquids, we named the Sheam. Converting francium into bubbles, guarantees less friction in the slide. Recycling the francium, it combines back with the ecosystem. Stabilizing once again in the elements of the Sheam.
Myk: Here comes that landing, better brace for it.
Reaching the end of the tube, it slows me enough not to be splattered all over the ejection site. Taking a brief second, I worry that the recoil pad won’t initiate the landing cushion. Never failing, the Sheam whisks up, cocooning my lower torso with nanite infused francium. Slowing my return to the city streets, it’s a short walk to my destination.
Myk: Sweet, stuck the dismount.
Muttering to myself to ease my nerves, I recoup to my upright position. Proceeding my trek to the Tribe of Inspectors, I decide to take the longer stroll through the local market. Approaching the entrance, I hear the calls of the vendors.
Market vendor 1: Fresh Squalish! Caught early this morning!
Market vendor 2: Sign up for your new job at the pooling stations!
Market vendor 3: The finest weaved suits of real Zarloch fibers!
Thriving from the volume of shouts, I connect with my inner thoughts. On a day with introductions to my new boss, believe me, I have a tremendous amount on my mind. Following the market, I reach the steep stairs of the Hall to the Tribe of Inspectors. Mammoth amounts of my people, the Shoal, sprawl over these stairs. Endless as the Sheam, they clash the backdrop with skin colors ranging from green to dark blue. Accompanying the adults are their hatchlings, for our shoal have two stages of life, adult and youth. Around the age of ten, the Shoal transform in a three-week hibernation, growing to full size. Multiple moons rotating the planet, gives approximately 300 years for the lifecycle of the Shoal.
Humbled in our beginnings of cavern dwellers, we have made numerous advancements in technology. Developing Cities built of stone and diamonds, lay deep under the Sheam. Naturally, when given the chance of joining the Tribe, it was an honor to uphold the tradition of protecting our environment. The top of Shoal pride, the Tribe is tasked with the protection of our planet, Avisa.
Passing the main arch ways of the building, I work the maze to the 29th floor. Posed, I stood facing the door of the man that employs me. Sucking in a big breath, I knock.
Director Swish: Come in!
Upon opening the door, I announce myself.
Myk: Hello sir, I’m your ten o’clock. Inspector 13089, Myk Wallows. Reporting for duty, sir.
Director Swish: Sir?! Relax Inspector, the name is Director Scaven Swish.
Myk: Okay then. Director Swish, I’m eager to start my first assignment. What ever it may be?
Director Swish: Yes, yes, yes… I see you tested well under our divisions of science. Even some of our secondary courses, such as global history and self defence.
Myk: I try to learn every thing the Academy will teach. Not just the mandatory Courses.
Director Swish: Relax, you already made the Tribe. You will be a fine addition to our team. First, you will be assigned your partner proceeding this meeting. You can find him at the partner allocation unit. More importantly, if you need anything, I’m here to help. I like to be one of those hands-on directors.
Myk: Yes, thank you Director Swish.
Director Swish: We will be starting you slowly, getting you introduced to your duties at the Tribe. That being said, you’re ready to go meet your partner. Good luck and keep me informed.
Myk: I won’t let you down Director!
Commencing our words, I shoot out the door towards the levitation jets, that will take me to the 16th floor. Jets that allow pressurized Sheam to levitate a platform between certain levels. Swift and eager, I make my way to the allocation unit. Walking up to the front desk, I see a gray wall containing a single door. Pushing the button to notify the staff sergeant, I’m ecstatic to meet my assigned partner. Abruptly, the door flies open.
Before my eyes, I see a pooling tube. Invented to connect the cities of Avisa with instant transportation between them. This is my first time seeing it up close, it looks ominous. Merely a pool of francium, floating between two stabilizer poles. Attached to those poles, are blinking blue boxes on each side, they receive the data to reanimate transportee. Wires bellow out the side of the poles, powering the pooling tube. The sizable power jolt it takes to run these units, flickers the lights. In that brief second of analyzation, an elongated shape zaps out of the pool. Displaying dimensions of a stretched sphere, the front slanted to a rounded tip. Forming wings of thin foil, they were ribbed to maximize lift. Situated at the back end of the robot, it had mini thrusters and fins. Hovering beside the staff sergeant, she approaches me with the device following. Dumbfounded at the strange bot, I hardly hear her first words.
Staff Sergeant: Here you go, your new partner.
Myk: Excuse me, am I missing something? I don’t see any fellow Shoal standing here.
Staff Sergeant: Shoal?... oh, no one told you. You are the recipient of our new tech. Instead of a Shoal partner, you will be testing S.U.P.B.
Myk: What is a S.U.P.B?
Staff Sergeant: A Science. Unit. Protocol. Bot! Or S.U.P.B, you know like the vehicle you took on school trips.
Myk: Is the p silent?
Staff sergeant: Yep. The name surveyed well with the youth demographic.
Myk: What am I suppose to do with it?
Staff Sergeant: Oh no worries, S.U.P.B has been updated with the academy handbook, as well as schematics of our planet. In addition, he is frequently uploaded with the condition of ecosystems and your current objectives.
Myk: Geesh, what do you need the Inspectors for anymore?
Staff Sergeant: S.U.P.B is highly experimental. You will be the first to test it out.
Myk: What sort of directions can it take?
Staff Sergeant: S.U.P.B is an adaptive technology. It will learn from your movements and personalize its interactions.
Patting the sergeant on the shoulder, I head off with my new partner. S.U.P.B came linked to my Zute Disc, which every Shoal has implanted at birth. Thanks to the coupling parameters of my Disc, S.U.P.B can access all documents about me or answer my V.I.P installation. Saving me the annoyance of having frequent beeps from my Virtual Imagery Projection calls. Opposite Installations have offered communication ability between the Shoal, though not heavily used on Avisa. Surrounded deep in an ocean of Sheam, the radioactive principles frazzle communications outside our city walls. Conditions that have a tendency to hyper evolve creatures that exist on Avisa. Patchy dark spots mixed with bright thermal areas, make up the outer Sheam. Filling the Sheam are mammals, that we either eat or coexist with.
Wondering of the new technology in my grasp, I walk down the steps to the building’s massive gates. Suddenly, it dawns on me, what is my first assignment? Let’s think, the sergeant said it is set to my Zute disc, does it mean its voice command capable? Uttering a command, I hope to be recognized by the science bot.
Myk: S.U.P.B, are you
