    Chapter 1: What's Minecraft?

Alex, Lucius, Porkchop and I were falling into a new world. Flying parrots would have seen a black square open up and four somethings fall through it, dumped into this world by the hand of Herobrine himself, although the birds wouldn’t have known this. I can imagine their words: "What strange somethings these are, that flap their arms and still manage to fall." The birds would fly on, thinking no more about dark squares or flapping somethings.

Parrots came to mind as we fell into a jungle biome rendered below us. Several white, gray and yellow concrete towers, poked above the rich green canopy. Simple, but elegant. Next to the jungle, a city sprawled. It glittered with classy skyscrapers and neighborhoods of ancient brownstone buildings. A fleet of tour buses were parked outside a sandstone castle and its hanging garden. I describe mostly from memory, because at the time I was paying little attention to anything but my all-consuming thoughts.

I’d had the chance to save my friends, to save Boney Pete. I’d failed them both.

My gut twisted, and the pain inside it raised a question. If I wasn’t Hero Steve (and how could I be?), then who was I?

A flock of real parrots scattered like sprinkles as they left one tree and flew to another.

Yes, I could be a bird.

Call me Bird Steve. I would build a network of nests and gather bird-kind to create a colony. There, all birds would be happily stuffed with seeds, smothered with blankets and surrounded with family. My bird friends and I could squawk about the hard work of nest building then go swimming in the community birdbath, hoping to stumble into a pecking-brawl with our bird-rivals. Yes, I could enjoy bird-life.

Lucius told me that to see if a shoe fits, you have to try it on. What better time was there to realize my bird-potential?

I flapped like mad, attacking the air with my blocky arms. I felt the wind change and swirl around me. I felt myself slow down and rise higher than my fear-filled friends. Almost there. To complete the transformation I cupped my lips and tightened my vocal chords, until my entire body became a thin channel for noise. I pumped air from my lungs and a piercing whistle shot like an arrow from my mouth.

I’m sure it was a beautiful bird-noise, but the rushing wind stole most of it from my ears.

Instead of noticing my magnificent change, Alex and Lucius focused on the rapidly approaching jungle. Or Herobrine had bobbled their heads when he smacked us around and stuffed us into the void, like shoving a fish into a bucket.

To catch their attention and praise, I flapped faster. My fall began to slow, though not much, and the jungle grew at a ravenous pace. My flapping only took me further from my friends. I couldn’t power down and save them. My flapping came to a stuttering stop.

I tried the shoe, but my foot was too big.

    I was the problem.

    Problem Steve.

The canopy rushed closer. Closer! CLOSER! I could see the vines draping from the trees and thought that if we could land in the right spot… We shot past the treetops and the air around us glowed. I bruised an ankle on a leaf block, but before we broke apart on the forest floor, another black square opened beneath us. We shot through it and came out above a flat table of water. Smoky mountains loomed in the foggy distance.

‘Thank goodness!’ I thought, as we crashed down like boulders, discovering first that it was a shallow ocean. Only one block deep (or rather, one block shallow).

Lucius, the poor fox, paddled in circles, unable to stop swimming or else drown in the kiddie-pool of water. I … liked …the … sky … better.

Porkchop stood with his snout comfortably above the water.

    Lucius grumbled. Lucky pig!

Alex nudged the block beneath the water and her eyes widened. Woah, check it out. This is bedrock. We’ve fallen from the top of the world to the bottom!

Prep … ost … er … ous! Lucius said, trying his best to breathe without dunking himself. He stood on his hind legs and stuck his nose straight in the air, finding this let him speak easier. Head straight up, his eyes faced the horizon. I spy mountains to the east. We must be above sea level for there to be mountains. Large, smooth mountains, more like cliffs really. And look, to the west I see more mountains. To the north and south also. We are utterly surrounded by them!

Alex shook her head. You need to get your eyes checked. Those aren’t mountains or cliffs. They’re too flat. I’ll tell you what. We’re inside a big hole, one that stretches from the top, to the bottom of the world. It’s impressive work.

Improbable to the extreme. Who could have dug this? The tools required …

Who says they dug it by hand. Have you heard of TNT duping?

From the beginning, I paid little attention to their squabble having noticed a massive unmoving cloud above our heads. My vision adjusted and I realized the cloud was a cube of white concrete. Movement drew my eyes to a platform, which was small compared to the gigantic floating box, but still quite large. This platform separated from the structure and, wonder of wonders, began to descend. It was a jumble of honey blocks, slime blocks, and sticky pistons, a goopy, organic elevator that lived and moved. Two curious heads (no doubt the creators of the contraption) with four eyes each, leaned over the platform’s edge and stared down at us.

My ears picked up on Lucius’ last comment: Who could have dug this by hand?

I pointed at the four pairs of eyes. Let’s ask them.

Lucius saw the moving platform and, in utter shock, slipped under. Water crowded inside his mouth and made him sputter. He clawed his way back to the surface. Filipatious! Goodness! Ubergross! Ridiculous!

Alex made impressed noises of her own. It can’t be … I’ve heard rumors of stuff like this, but I never imagined I’d see it in person. She waded through the water, her eyes eating up the machine’s underbelly to discover its secrets.

Bird Steve had gone the way of the dodo, but this wondrous machine created new life inside me. Perhaps I was Inventor Steve, creator of mechanical wonders? I wanted to try this shoe on as quickly as I could. So I dove underwater and swimming ahead of Alex, came up beneath the platform right as it came to a crunching halt, one block above my head.

The two heads revealed themselves to be lab-coat scientists. Their extra pair of eyes turned out to be goggles. The shorter scientist, an upbeat woman with a cheery voice, giggled, and brought out a clipboard.

What a strange phenomenon! Is it true they bypassed the whitelist to join the server?

The other scientist, who was a gruff, mustached fella, leaned over the water and glared down at Alex, Lucius, and Porkchop. Hrmphf. There are no IP addresses associated with them. There appear to be flaws in our otherwise perfect system.

    Oh, exciting!

    No. Dangerous.

Lucius called up, "You two seem like sensible fellows. Could you by chance, tell
