CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DISCOVERY OF
THE NEW WORLD
Chirstopher%20Columbus.jpgI T WAS ON October 7, 1492 that Christopher Columbus in search of a new world changed the flights course , to go west and sailed throughout the night, believing land was soon to be found. Later in the evening he thought he saw light, like a little wax candle rising and falling. Four hours later as he look out again on the horizon, he spotted land and immediately alerted the rest of his crew with a shout. Then he called upon the captain of the Pinta who verified the sight of land to discharge gunfire , thereby claiming for himself the lifetime pension, promised by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to the first person to sight land.
Columbus call the Island Guanahani meaning Holy Savior
, in what is now known as San Salvador in the Bahamas. The First Landing in the New World was on October 12th, 1492, which Christopher Columbus renamed San Salvador, an island in The Bahamas.
The Bahamas attained full internal self-government on January 7th. 1964, constitutional advance in 1969 and achieved full Independence as a Commonwealth realm on the 10th, July 1973. Sir Milo Butler was appointed the first Governor-General of the Bahamas (the official representative of Queen Elizabeth II). Shortly after Independence, Lynden Pindling was appointed Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
OVERVIEW OF THE COURT OF ST. JAMES
I N THE COMMONWEALTH of Nations a High Commissioner is a senior Diplomat, generally ranking as an Ambassador, in charge of the diplomatic mission. Instead of an embassy the diplomatic mission is generally called a High Commission. The Commonwealth of Nations generally known simply as the Commonwealth, is a political Association of 54 member states, most of which were territories of the British Empire. Comprising a makeup of Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and the Pacific .They are among the world’s biggest, smallest, richest, and poorest countries.
The principal institution of the Organization are the Commonwealth Secretariat which focuses on inter-governmental aspects and the Commonwealth Foundation which focuses on non-governmental relations between member states. The Commonwealth dates back to the first half of the 20th century with the decolonization of the British Empire, through increased self-governance of the territories. It was originally created as the British Commonwealth of nations.
The current Commonwealth of Nations was formally constituted by the London declaration in 1949 which modernized the community and established the member states as free and equal. The head of the Commonwealth is Queen Elizabeth the second. The queen is also the head of state of 16 member states known as the Commonwealth Realms, while 33 other members states are Republics’ and five others have a different status.
Member states have no legal obligation to one another, but are connected through the use of the English language and the historical ties. The States values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law are enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter.
FOREWORD
T HIS ERUDITE, ELOQUENT, and immensely thought provoking work; gets to the heart of the deepest passions and aspirations of the human heart, to aspire to greatness and give oneself to his generation.
This is indispensable reading for anyone who wants to live life above the norm and believe that nothing is impossible if we are willing to dream and work. This is a profound authoritative work of personal achievement and it contains the wisdom of the ages. This human story has all the potential to inspire others to greatness and will possibly become a classic in this and the next generation.
This exceptional work by Dr. Richard C. Demeritte and Albert Cox is one of the most profound, practical, principle centered Autobiographies I have read in a long time. The work brings a fresh breath of air that captivates the heart, engages the mind and inspires the spirit of the reader to believe there is no limit to those who are willing to believe and maximize their full potential.
The author’s ability to leap over complicated jargon and metaphysical impracticalities reduce complex theories of success to simple practical principles that the least among us can understand, is amazing.
This work will challenge the intellectual while embracing the laymen; as it dismantles the mysteries of the soul search of mankind’s purpose to rise to greatness despite the odds and delivers the profound in simplicity.
Dr. Demeritte’s approach awakens in the reader the untapped inhibiters that retard our personal development and his antidotes empower us to rise above these self-defeating, self limiting factors to a life of exploits in spiritual and mental advancement.
The author also integrates into each chapter the time-tested precepts giving each success principle a practical application to life making the entire process people friendly.
Every sentence of this book is pregnant with wisdom, inspiration, encouragement and I enjoyed the mind expanding experience of this exciting book. I admonish you to plunge into this ocean of knowledge and watch your life change for the better. Drink from the well of one man’s story that can challenge you to make history.

TRIBUTE TO RICHARD C. DEMERITTE
FROM
SEAN McWeeney QC
Richard Demeritte is an outstanding Bahamian. He has distinguished himself in a variety of important spheres of national and international life, most notably, in the Public Service as Auditor-General and later as High Commissioner for The Bahamas to the Court of St. James in London, the most prestigious of all diplomatic postings. In addition, Richard has played a leading role in the development of the accountancy profession in The Bahamas. Perhaps less well known, he has also served as a behind-the-scenes
advisor to a number of our national political, religious and professional leaders for a great many years.
None of that, however, should come as any surprise, for Richard Demeritte is an individual of considerable wisdom, sound discretion and great ability. Moreover, he possesses a keen sense of patriotic duty. Never one to shirk a challenge, he has always been ready to give the very best of himself and his impressive talents to assist in advancing important causes both at home and abroad.
It is gratifying to see that Richard is continuing to spread his wings; wings that are carrying him to new adventures, including the writing and publication of his autobiography; for which he is to be heartily congratulated. It is even more gratifying to know that a permanent record of this fine and accomplished son of the Bahamian soil will be available to help guide and inspire present and future generations of Bahamians to emulate his success, not only as a national figure but as an exemplary husband, father and grandfather.
I commend Richard on attaining this important milestone in his life and wish him continued success in all his endeavors.
Sean McWeeney QC
