    AUTISM

    H ERE ARE SOME of the common questions that run through the caregiver’s mind, whose just got diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD);

    How is it that a child talks, walks, socializes with others, behaves appropriately possesses high intellect and responds to their name when called out is considered normal. And, on the other hand, how a child who is nonverbal or vocalizes minimal words, has and does not respond to his or her name, walk on their tippie toes, and does not socialize properly and behave inappropriately is considered autistic on the spectrum, whether low-functioning or high-functioning? What did I do wrong? Is this my karma coming into action? Is God punishing me? How are we going to take care of this child? What measures are we going to take to ensure that the child feels normal and lives his/her life normally? How is society going to react to my child? Is this a lifetime dependency? How come this happened to me? Why did God do this to my child?

    All these questions are important; and some are mandatory to answer and make sense of. Whatever, the situation might be, it is crucial to fulfill one need that every child has to feel loved and accepted by their parents. Without their love and acceptance, that child is going to be no different than an empty shell that will be filled by society later on.
