    This book is designed to serve as a handy resource tool for new and experienced leaders. It highlights the critical principles needed to address challenges sure to arise during your tenure as a leader and provides proven ways of addressing them. Principles can often take us to uncomfortable places we would rather not be. Nonetheless, it is imperative that we follow them because they are the right thing to do. You’ll find that these Principles are indifferent to friendships, party affiliation, tribal ethos, nationalities, ethnicities or established organizational cultures. They are applicable to virtually any situation, whether minor or major and will point you towards the right decision. It was the commitment to each of these suggested principles that guided me and my staff in making difficult decisions, allowed us to feel confident in our stances and to withstand the stressful circumstances swirling around us and the harsh criticisms directed at us. Collectively, these principles served as our north star, allowing us to navigate through the rough waters of unforeseen circumstances. If applied, they will successfully guide you and your leadership team as well.

    P. Lamont Ewell

    P. Lamont Ewell began his public safety career as a firefighter in Compton, California. He later joined the Prince Georges County Fire Department as a Chief Officer. In 1991, he was appointed Fire Chief of Oakland, California. Thirteen days after arriving, Oakland experienced one of the worst wild land/urban fires in its history. The fire took the lives of 25 people and destroyed approximately 3400 housing units. After managing the fire and assisting the city with rebuilding the community, he was appointed Assistant City Manager of Oakland. He went on to become City Manager of three dynamic cities, Durham, North Carolina, San Diego, California and Santa Monica California. He posseses an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and an Executive Masters degree in General Administration. After 34 successful years in the public sector he chose to formally retire. Today, he conducts executive recruitments for Ralph Andersen & Associates. He and his family live on a ranch in southern California where they care for their horses, a dog named Lucille and a Zinfandel vineyard.
