PREFACE
I am honored to have been chosen by Mr. Emmanuel Coffy, Esq., and Mr. Albert Decady, Esq., to write the preface to their new book, The Value of Your Idea$.
I have had the honor and privilege of being Mr. Coffy’s law partner for several years now. Both Mr. Coffy and Mr. Decady have written an important primer on how to use intellectual property law to protect one of your businesses’ most important assets: its intellectual property.
Intellectual property takes many forms and a comprehensive knowledge of each form of protection for your intellectual property is imperative. If you attempt to try this on your own, you may risk and lose the value of all your hard work. History is filled with many examples of people who failed to properly protect their intellectual property, and the cost to them for the failure to do so is immeasurable.
The most notable example is someone people probably never heard of but whose idea is responsible for the vast majority of technological improvements in the world today, Vincent Cerf. Cerf is the codesigner of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the internet.
The purpose of this book is to educate you on the types of intellectual property and how to utilize the appropriate method to keep your most valuable asset safe and to be able to realize the full value of your work, time, and effort. This book is also a motivational book inciting the reader to take action to bring about their ideas to reality. The book attempts to articulate in plain terms a subject matter that is complex and full of intricacies. The objective is to decipher for the layperson the different aspects of intellectual property, namely, its ideation to creation, its characterization, its capitalization, its materialization (implementation), its protection, its exploitation (commercialization), its monetization, and its valuation. To provide as much of a complete picture as possible, the book starts with a historical perspective of human creativity. Finally, the authors reduced the whole process to an equation: idea + action = success.
That is the theme of the book developed with maestria throughout.
I exhort you to take the time and make the effort to thoroughly read and understand the concepts in this book chapter by chapter. Once you have done so, I strongly urge you to take action and set up an initial strategy session with an IP professional so you know what is involved with the protection of your intellectual property.
Leonard R. Boyer, Esq.
INTRODUCTION
Everything is determined, the beginning as well as
the end, by forces over which we have no control
… we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned
in the distance by an invisible player.
—Albert Einstein.
An Overview of the History of Inventions throughout the Ages
Humankind’s journey toward modernization has been and is long and incremental with each civilization contributing its efforts and ingenuity to making today’s state of the art as we know it. No one civilization, country, tribe, community, or ethnic group can claim a monopoly on modernization. Rather, the advances or discoveries of one age, epoch, time period, or civilization are used as a building block to making what science is today, thereby reaping the benefits of past efforts. For example, according to the Atlanta Black Star, [e]stimates supported by genetic, archaeological, paleontologic and other evidence, suggests that language probably emerged somewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa during the Middle Stone Age, hence the first words by humans were spoken by Africans.
Another significant contribution by the Africans is the creation of the alphabet by the Carthaginians. Even globalization is not a product
