About this ebook

This book was inspired by my old friend and scholar, Norman Dodd, who many years ago brought to my attention the idea of a Natural Order, "an order laid down by God," as a means to bring our country back to the course first established by our nation´s Founding Fathers, a course from which we have dangerously strayed. It is my contention that such a natural order does exist, and there will truly never be peace in the world until humanity is made aware of, understands, and ultimately conforms to that order. In light of experience two conclusions may be observed:

1) History attests to the sensitivity of men to the existence of this order.
2) That sensitivity has been intelligently nullified.
It is our intention to present the nature of The Natural Order, to indicate why our sensitivity to that order has been nullified, and to demonstrate the means by which that order may restored, implemented and made universally known.

This work is an attempt to re-establish the importance of absolute values in a world where such values are becoming increasingly irrelevant, and the necessity of preserving those immutable and self-evident truths upon which was established our nation´s framework and foundation. Norman Dodd´s dream was to establish and implement a Curriculum of The Civilizing Arts, whose purpose is to clarify and strengthen the original commitments which underlie and empower the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence. It is my purpose to help make his dream a reality. As such it is a compilation of our shared ideas and mutual dreams.

I was born in England but spent most of my life on the east coast of the United States. I am intent on protecting, preserving and implementing the hopes and aspirations of our country´s Founding Fathers. My formal education consists of a BA from Brown University, Masters of Divinity (M.Div) from Yale University, and a Ph.D from
Trinity College, Cambridge University, England.

    THE SPIRIT OF ‘76

T wo hundred years ago, this nation gave birth

To a new light of freedom for all the earth

Where liberty and justice worked hand in hand

And the dream of brotherhood filled the land

T his country was founded upon tumult and toil

Wrenched from wilderness and blood-soaked soil

A land rich with resources from eons dating

A land with spirit primeval and waiting

F rom the spirit of nature and the spirit of man

Merged a chosen people to fulfill God’s plan

They forged the framework of the Constitution

A foundation of strength and of resolution

B ut behind this structure that man perceived

There lay a Natural Order by God conceived

Where arts and sciences, philosophy, and religion

Provided wealth and equity, justice and wisdom

M an’s energies applied to his duties and rights

To help build this nation to ever new heights

    Government, education, production, distribution

These were the means to a more perfect union

W hen held in balance those forces contained

Both purity and power perpetually sustained

An endless source of direction and strength

Infusing this land, its breadth, and its length

B ut over the years this vision has faded

Not by alien foes was this nation invaded

Or by myths and spectors of the mind conjured

But a slipping of spirit, of purpose obscured

T he freedom to live and the freedom to choose

Was confused with the freedom to decry and abuse

The priceless became common, familiarity brings

Contempt and preoccupation with trivial things.

T here is no such thing as the land of the free

If its people have lost their responsibility

If it fails to discern between evil and good

Those issues upon which our nation first stood

T ime and again it seems so much is in doubt

The institutions we revered in a state of rout

Pragmatic formulas without a moral equation

Reduce man to a number with no true valuation

T o compromise essences, to debate away rights

Leads to darker days and still darker nights

Above all, there must lie the essential distinction

Between evil and good, irreconcilable contradiction

W e need a spiritual and moral regeneration

To once again kindle in the heart of this nation

The fire and strength found in toil and tears

That held fast this land for over two hundred years

S trife and confusion, suppression, delusion

When mixed in the heat of man’s resolution

Temper that steel from which greatness is born

Forging link upon link to weather the storm

T his is not just your land or my land to know

It belongs to all who make it prosper and grow

Those who nurture that oneness as best they can

Each freely bound in service to his fellow man

I n all of our dealings whatever the affair

We must look to balance to avoid despair

All is interwoven in the cloth of the state

No act is isolated whether small or great

F or each one of us is a single strand

Within the vast fabric that is our land

As each of us thinks and each of us acts

So swells this nation or so it contracts

W hat we as a country would endeavor to be

Is no more than a projection of you and me

That spirit which binds us to a common cause

Uniting God and man through its natural laws

W e have but one purpose, to evolve and grow

To that end, it is vital that we come to know

When a nation unites with its source of power

It manifests that source as its finest hour

F or that which we were, we still are if we see

One nation, born in spirit, in spirit set free

A diverse people with but a single face

A land blessed by God and touched with grace¹

    PREFACE

In 1915, in the midst of the fighting of the First World War, an armistice of five minutes was declared, and an announcement was flashed around the globe introducing Einstein’s theory of relativity to the world. That momentous discovery not only heralded the beginning of the atomic age, but it symbolically sounded the death knell for a world of absolute values and immutable truths that had existed since the beginning of civilization. The world we know today is one where relative values reign supreme. This work is an attempt to reestablish the importance of absolute values and the necessity of preserving those immutable and self-evident truths upon which was built the framework and foundation of the United States of America.

To this end, Norman Dodd devoted his life and work. His dream was to establish and implement a Curriculum of the Civilizing Arts, whose purpose is to clarify and strengthen the original commitments that underlie and empower the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

This book is dedicated to Norman Dodd, a friend and scholar, without whose imagination, inspiration, and extensive notes, this presentation of The Natural Order: The Blueprint for the New Age would not have been possible. I am committed to help make the common dream we share a reality for all people. As a means to this end, I propose to take you on a journey, a journey of my discovery, and more importantly, to set in motion a journey of your discovery to provide a guide to the unfolding of your dreams and desires. This is to enlighten, fulfill, and help establish to the degree that you desire a similar purpose in your life, as such a journey did for me.

Such a journey teaches you to be humble because it exposes you to great minds and spiritual powers seldom realized. By taking such a journey, you will open your mind to see your own potential unfold, to actualize what you may have only dreamed, and to see beyond the bounds of your own self-limitation to the glory of bringing your mind ever closer to the mind of God.

How do you know if you are on the right track? You will feel a profound sense of longing, a reaching for something beyond yourself, a striving for something, dare I say it, eternal. How do you tune in to the eternal? Start with Plato’s world of ideas, his eternal forms and archetypes, and work back through the minds of our greatest thinkers, who have surely taken such a journey, to yourself, letting their ideas flow through you, enriching your own.

Then put those ideas, now your own expanded ideas, into action. For as A. N. Whitehead proclaimed, All philosophy is a footnote to Plato. That journey, from knowledge to action, is the purpose of this work. The means to fulfilling that purpose is an understanding of the Natural Order presented here and the establishing of a Curriculum of the Civilizing Arts implementing the ideas of the Natural Order.

How may this be accomplished? What are the obstacles to be overcome? What is the nature and purpose of the opposing forces that we will encounter, their goals, and means of opposition? These are the questions we will deal with. How we answer them and the solutions we will propose are the driving forces behind this book.

    THE NATURAL ORDER THE

    BLUEPRINT FOR THE NEW AGE

Peace on Earth, which men of every era have so eagerly yearned for can be firmly established only if the order laid down by God be dutifully observed².

This encyclical of Pope John XXIII is unique, for it is addressed not only to all members of the Catholic Church but to the whole world and to all men of goodwill. It is timely because it speaks of order in a world whose problems are essentially those of disorder. Unfortunately, the nature of that order and the purpose of its revelation have not been given to us in this encyclical.

It is our contention that there does exist a Natural Order, an order which has historically been referred to as a natural one, and that there will truly never be peace in the world until humankind is made aware of, understands, and ultimately conforms to that order. In the light of experience, two conclusions may be observed:

    a. History attests to the sensitivity of men to the existence of this order.

    b. That sensitivity has been intelligently nullified.

It is our intention to present the nature of the Natural Order to indicate why our sensitivity to that order has been nullified and to demonstrate the means by which that order may become universally known.

    THEREFORE, IT IS THE

    PURPOSE OF THIS WORK

    1. To reveal the nature of the Natural Order, to describe its structure, and to indicate the forces, forms, and functions with which it is endowed.

    2. To demonstrate that the self-evident truths enumerated in our nation’s Declaration of Independence are the clearest representation of that order and that the Constitution of the United States provides the means and practices by which that order may be attained.
