Foreword
By Julia Levy
Most people have heard the first stanza of the serenity prayer: God, give me the grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, the courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to know the difference.
In The Girl from the Northern Mountains, my friend Lois Furtado has shared through allegory her heart-wrenching, personal journey of learning how to live out the second, lesser known and perhaps more demanding stanza:
"Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it, Trusting that You will make all things right, If I surrender to Your will, So that I may be reasonably happy in this life, And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen."
This story, which began as a graduate school assignment, challenging students to share their cross-cultural experiences, quickly became a much deeper project of reflection and healing
