From My Mind and Heart to Yours

This book is a combination of my thoughts, feelings, ideas, my joy, my pain, and my sorrow as I have
walked the last 45 years of this life. There were times that this book and the poems are inspired by
actual people that I have had the pleasure of meeting other times and moments of joy and laughter and
even tragedy as I have had an opportunity to pour my heart out onto paper. There were times in this
book when the poems are inspired by a thought or feeling or a moment. I have walked this journey
called life through moments of pain. There is a popular saying that the struggle is real after spending
time deployed in combat I agree some of the poems have been inspired by moments of real clarity with
bullets and bombs popping and bursting all around me. After experiencing some of the most horrific
moments of my life these poems were how I have dealt with these life moments. I invite you to share
with me my journey makes it be real, and a moment of relief and transparency for you as it was for me.
This book causes me to laugh at times to cry and to contemplate my existence as well as humanity.

A FIRE GUARD FROM HELL

Its after midnight and my watch has just began

I almost smiled when I think this has me stuck in the sand

They told us stories of a soldier’s plight

For those that were wounded in the fight

They would say All gave some but some gave all

It was hard not to think that I may be the next to fall

I peer into the darkness and for a moment all seems well

They talked about the heat of the battle and it’s horrible smell

As the darkness takes over we lose all bits of light

It seems like the yolk around my neck gets even more tight

I wonder if my decision to join was the right one

In the beginning it was about college money and having fun

It is now four am and my guard is at its peak

People are so scared that they can’t even take a leak

Tough guys are in their tents not even making a peep

Very few people are able to sleep

In the near distance there is a flash of light and lots of noise

Trying to show us the reality of war and these are not toys

Soft, Gentle

Fragile, Delicate

Sweet smelling, Beautiful

Magical, Breath Taking

Heart- warming, Lovely

Enduring, Special

Enchanting, Long Lasting

Majestic, Cherished

Delightful, Amazing

Exquisite, Glorious

A Flower

A GENTLE BREEZE

I awoke to a warm smelling aroma

That filled my nose with dancing bells

My senses where in overload

As my mouth watered

I could almost smell fresh baked bread

The sun peaks over the clouds for the first time

The trees began to move slowly

Life wakes up all around

I feel like a million tiny kisses across my skin

This is a gentle breeze

A MOMENT OF RELIEF

No longer is it me that they turn to in a crisis

A moment of Relief

No phone calls at 4 in the morning yelling help

A moment of Relief

No one showing up at my job with a never-ending story

A moment of relief

No more lying to me ashamed to tell the truth

A moment of relief

No more mistreating me who was just trying to help

A moment of Relief

No more name calling or even wanting to fight

A moment of Relief

No more sleepless nights concerned about you

A moment of relief

No more worrying about you that I make myself sick

I am finally free now to enjoy

A SUMMERS DAY

Sunlight pierced through the window and warms the room

Sweet smelling flowers on the table that are freshly in bloom

Bees are buzzing and birds begin to sing

Let’s me know that summer is in full swing

Walking on the grass in the early morning dew

Makes you realize these moments are priceless and true
