Welcome!
Sitting quietly at the southern end of Tyler County is the tiny town of Friendly, West Virginia. Nestled between the rolling hills to the east and the Ohio River to the west, her inhabitants exhibit a unique blend of old Appalachia and modern living. Although technology exists here, the town still has the same look and feel as it did when I lived there fifty years ago. There are still gardens and livestock within the city limits, and people know each other on a first-name basis. While it is not a town caught up in its past, it is a town that insists on preserving a part of it.
The fact that you are reading this book gives me great pleasure. I am humbled and thankful. But be forewarned, I do not have a degree in journalism. I am simply a man who enjoys telling stories. This likely will not be a New York Times Best Seller. I am a self-taught writer, and I am a man of few words. While a professional writer will lure you into their story with fancy words that come from a thesaurus, I prefer to keep mine simple. I don’t reckon you need three pages of fluff and fill to tell you how the inside of a room looks. In other words
(get it?), I will tell you my story and allow you to fill in the background using your own imagination and memories.
Eloquent (graceful) prose is wonderful, and as an avid reader, I appreciate it. It’s just not my forte (that means it’s not my thing). I don’t think you’ll need fancy words to understand my story. In fact, I’m betting you won’t. So from here on out, I won’t use any words that might make you stop reading and reach for a dictionary.
As you read this book, you may experience similar connections to your own youth, and that’s my goal. I want to take you back in time. I want you to remember. I believe it is important to exercise your mind and relive those wonderful, youthful memories through the fading lens of time. Hopefully, some of those memories will return in full focus. Please take those memories and share them with your family. Oral history is a vital yet rapidly fading part of our society. Everything we do today is shared online, and personal connections are becoming a thing of the past.
I will not attempt to prove that the good old days
of my youth were better than today. The world is very
