    Chapter 1

    April 1969

Thank you for your welcome card and your Mum’s which was waiting for us here when we arrived Joan.

I expect you are dying to know what kind of Journey we had here, well it was terrible Weather Wise.

Never the less we are here just the same!

It started off as soon as we left the Needles Isle of Wight by Paul Carol and Wendy being sick then me we all went down like flies. Kim only being 2 years stayed in her cot in the Cabin and wasn’t really sick like us.

We were in our Cabin for 2 and half days and I couldn’t have cared less if I had died!

However, Brian kept on our case and eventually we listened to him and he got us all up on the Upper Deck and we managed to keep Dry Rolls down, so from then on, we never looked back.

The Sea Sick Pills the Ship gave us weren’t very good though as they sold Sea Legs on board and we went on them and that kept us going all through the Journey if we needed them.

Our first Tour was to Las Palmas we toured the whole Island by Taxi and it only cost us 4 Pounds.

The Island is mainly Volcanic but very beautiful, we were taken to a Banana Plantation where they were growing Lemons, Coffee Beans as well as the Bananas

After we left Las Palmas we ran into bad weather and on Good Friday Night I thought the Ship was about to sink but it didn’t but believe you me it did everything else!

On the Easter Saturday we unfortunately, at Five A.M. lost the Bosun, he was swept overboard while fixing a gate that was banging,

We searched for him for six hours but no trace of him was found of him before leaving they threw a lifebuoy over, Brian being a Sailor said he would have gone under the screws

The Crew were very gloomy for days, after this, and so were most of the Passengers as he was well liked.

A Collection was taken up from all the Passengers for his family in Italy we hope it helped them in their loss.

Our next stop was Cape Town we still had lousy weather when we docked it was terribly Windy and Dusty the ship was even Rocking in the Harbour!

We missed out on visiting the Shops as just as we got Ashore they all were closing. Brian and I didn’t think much of it all, in fact according to Brian it was one the worst Ports he had ever been to.

    For a Large City with
