CHAPTER 1
W OW! I cannot believe we are here, can you Luvy? For years, we said we would go but never had the time or money. At last, we are here. We arrived at Quebec Airport at 2:20 PM, it is hot and muggy, and about to rain. We had talked about going to Quebec for years. Now we were here.
Walking down the main street of Quebec. The locals were friendly, smiling and chatting as we passed. The heavy clouds that hung darkly in the sky finally let go. We ran for cover to a nearby restaurant. The inside is amazing; the whole place is carved in wood.
I am in heaven
, I stand looking around for a moment in amazement. Dragons and mythical beasts have been hand carved into the wood, flowers, and birds. We find a table and sit down in ore. A friendly lady comes to our table with a menu, You American?
she asked. No!
we are Australian, she bows her head. Kangaroos
she smiled. That’s right
I smile and flip open my iPad. She laughs and smiles as I show her photos of my joeys I have raised at home. She calls out to someone behind a curtain. A small girl appears and shyly comes over. The small girl smiles and giggles as she looks at the photos. We take our time to look through the menu and guided by the lady, we give her our order. We have a great meal with a glass of red wine and talk about our day ahead. Jim my husband, also nicknamed levy ordered another drink, I Linda have to go to the loo! The loo is outside I am told., So I leave Jim with his drink and go outside looking for the Loo! People are looking up in the sky. I looked up to see what they were looking at.
New to the place I don’t understand what they were going on about. I continue to search for the Loo! I push open a door I think might be what I am looking for. Oops! It is a computer room. People are shouting excitingly, I walked over to a man hovering over his computer what is going on? I asked. Haven’t you heard? Heard what I ask. The sun is dying! No way I say, how do you know that I ask? He indeed says, Look on my computer. I look it makes no sense, just a graft. He explains to me how the graft has changed. Nothing makes any sense to me, OK! What will happen? I ask! This was not to happen for years, not in our lifetime young lady he informs me. So why now? I ask becoming somewhat concerned. I don’t know the replies. He goes on to say, first, the small animals will die, birds, frogs, then the trees and flora. After that humans will die, with that he wishes me well and walks away. I stand there for a moment, not sure what to believe is he for real, I asked myself. I find a loomband relieve myself, and go outside to look for Jim. A shop has a TV on, and everyone is watching. A guy is talking about the Sun.
The Sun is an incandescent ball of exceedingly hot plasma (ionized gas) with 750 times the mass of all the solar systems planets combined. At its core, which has a temperature of 15.7 million; c (28.3 million; f), nuclear fusion reaction produces helium from hydrogen and generates huge amounts of energy. Which escapes from the Sun as heat, light, and other types of radiation, including x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, and radio waves, also, the sun emits a continual stare, called the solar wind. The Sun’s rate of energy production and surface temperature have stayed relatively constant since it formed about 4.6 billion years ago and should remain that way for another 5 billion years. So we don’t know why it has changed now. It is true, the guy was not crazy, and it’s here on the news. And now I am starting to fill scared and afraid. Outside people are crying, there’s a feeling of hopelessness. I go back to the restaurant to find Jim, his not there. I go outside and look around, cannot find him. So I head back to our hotel. I am upset confused, how and where is our hotel? I ring Jim no answer. I try again, still no good. I begin to walk, hoping I will recognize something. I am lost, in a place, I have never been scared and alone. I ring again, now angry, where are you? I ask myself. I still cannot relate to anything, am I going the wrong way? I ask myself. Two people are coming my way, I stop and empty my bag on the footpath, looking for a hotel card. I find it! I run towards the people, please! Can you help me! They look at the card, but they don’t know where it is. I run after them, my belongings still scatted on the footpath. Please help I beg, they shake their heads and walk on. I run back and gather up my belongings, and head another way in tears now. A t last I see something I recognize I keep walking, faster now.
I see my Hotel and walk picking up my pace, at last, I am inside. I enter the Hotel and find my room. I burst open the door. He’s lying on the bed having a rest. Wake up Luvy, something intense is going on. Jim rolls over and opens his eyes. What happened to you? He asked, rubbing his eyes. I waited for you, you took so long so I came back here, though you had come back. I turn on the Viand flick the channels. News on every channel. Reporters are everywhere, a red strip with breaking news is running across the screen. I flick the channel again, the same thing. Jim is sitting up now, hats happening he asks? I am not sure, I say! That’s what I am trying to find out. A news reporter is now showing clips of birds falling out of the sky. She explains that small birds such as finch, wrens and other small birds are dying. Another news flash is crossing the screen. Mothers are crying, as they are giving birth to stillborn. Reporters are interviewing people on the streets. Some people think it’s a hoax, others are frightened and don’t know what to do. They show the big red Sun and talk to people that are trying to find their way home to family. A woman says she has never seen anything like it, and she is scared. A man on his way home from overseas thinks it amazing but hopes it’s not too serious. We have to get back home! I say to Jim. I walk out on the balcony. I look up at the now setting sun. It looks amazing, big red glowing a purple glow. Jim comes outside to have a look. I go back inside and open a bottle of wine, and pour it into the champagne glass that is on the kitchen bench. I take them outside on the balcony, and we click our glasses in silent. We look towards the purple-red glow in the sky. We should go home! I say sadly.
Before the rush and panic begin. Jim agrees, we sip our wine in silence, we go back inside,
