The Golden Rule: The Essence of Good Relationships

Some relationships are what one would call parasitic relationships. One of the parties is a parasite on the other—just there to milk from the person. They are toxic to the person, like a tapeworm or other bodily worms that are prevalent in third world countries. These worms attach their suckers to the intestine of the victim, and there, they suck all the nutrients in the food that is to be digested. When these worms are inside the body of their victim, they make the stomach look bloated, yet the person looks skinny and malnourished. They are of no use to the person; rather, they drain the person dry! That is how these relationships are. The person is malnourished spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally, etc., because they are in a relationship that is parasitic and is thereby toxic. The person is fully affected because deep down, they know that they are in an unhealthy relationship. But because they are so deep into it for whatever reasons or because they do not know how to get out of it, they stay in it until it affects them negatively in every way. Next thing you know, they become a facsimile of who they were created to be—a fax copy of their original self.

Say no to toxic relationships. You don’t have to tolerate anything that will diminish your value or denigrate you. If somebody is coming your way and they are not coming right, tell them to keep it moving and not to park it here. It is necessary to have that mind-set. It’s called self-preservation. Any relationship that does not confer respect and dignity on you is not worth your time and effort.

Dr. Emmanuel Obi

Dr. Emmanuel Obi, a long time resident of Brooklyn NY, was born in Nigeria, and migrated to the United States in 1974. He received a B.S in Psychology in 1977, and an MBA in 1979 in Springfield Massachusetts. Dr. Obi had experiences in Insurance, Teaching and Mortgage Banking. In 1986, he and his family relocated to Brooklyn NY where he continued with Mortgage Banking and Real Estate Sales and Investments. In 2000, Dr. Obi was inspired to study Theology, and enrolled in Community Bible Institute & Seminary in Brooklyn. He graduated with a Doctor of Theology/Divinity in 2007. Dr. Obi credits his mother for her inspiration, and prayers that have seen him through the years, and has brought him thus far. At 9yrs old, he joined the Choir at Christ Church Cathedral in Lagos, Nigeria. With that background, years later as an adult, he joined the Oratorio Society of New York, a 250 voice Choir that performs the entire Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall every Christmas season. He has also performed with the Choir, at Westminster Abbey in London, The Barbican in London, Oxford Cathedral, and Wells Cathedral. He is also a member of the Fine Arts Singers of New York, a group that performs Handel’s Messiah in Brooklyn. Dr. Obi is a Global Training Consultant in Customer Service and Personal Development. Dr. Obi is the Pastor of Kings Court Ministries in Brooklyn, NY. He is married with four children.
