It Is What It Is - Kimberly Renee
CHAPTER ONE
She was born in the winter of 1966 in a very small town out west. Her life was pretty much a typical child of the 70’s. She lived in the swimming pool in the summers, went to church, Sunday school and Bible school just like most of the kids in her town did. She had a little sister who was five years her junior, her mom and dad whom she loved more than anything, and most of all she loved God. She loved her animals. Her pets consisted of a few outdoor cats maybe one indoor cat, two small turtles and her two dogs. Her mom and dad were more dog lovers but that’s just how it was. She loved dogs, cats, fish, turtles, and whatever animal she could possibly think of for a pet. Yes..she was kind, she was loving and she knew of nothing that the future would have in store for her.
CHAPTER TWO
Her main concern for the first thirteen years of her life was to love everyone around her. She had family, aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, the clubhouse, building forts outside, attending the rodeo’s, and all of the parades that were held on most holidays. Her tiny town was really a picture right out of a Norman Rockwell scene.
She loved to play outside, inside and loved life. She was happy and carefree. Nothing seemed out of the norm in her life. The tiny town sat at the base of a Mountain and her world was completely secluded from reality. She never knew about the conflicts that existed when she was a little girl. Maybe her parents did but all was well hidden. Just living and loving life was all she thought about. Life was good. Or was it?
CHAPTER THREE
Her dad had four jobs at one time. He had his own band, worked for the state dept., was a volunteer fireman, and was also a part time ambulance driver. Dad told her some stories of sometimes having to embalm the bodies. If he went on a call in the ambulance and came upon someone who was deceased then he became the local mortician. Oh yes, she has many many wonderful memories of her childhood.
Her mom loved music just as much as her dad so she and her little sis were raised on music. Mostly country and a little bit of rock and roll. Dad graduated in 1957 so he still had a little rock and roll in him but his band was country. Mom was a cool mom. She made clothes for her and little sis. Mom was an artist and didn’t even know it. Mom should have applied herself more to her art but she was busy raising her family and by the time forth or fifth grade came around mom had to go out and get a job.
Dad had enough to do. The family was a little poor but never felt like it. Life was but a dream. Always fun and happy times. Poor or not She felt like she was the luckiest girl on earth.
Mom and dad always made sure that every Christmas Santa came and somehow always delivered almost exactly what her and little sis had asked for on their letters to Santa. On a few occasions the family vacations were spent at Disneyland in California, at this time Disneyworld had not been built yet. Often when times were a little rough there were always picnics out in the woods and family get togethers. Yes, she had it all or so she thought.
Her childhood was something that could not be explained other than she has nothing but good memories happy memories and any of the bad memories have slowly faded out of her mind accept for a few, she was very sensitive if someone called her fat, plump, or chubby, her feelings were always hurt to the very core, she was a bit of a drama queen however she was not really fat just a little plump. Her weight as a child was not really bad but she had a complex that seemed to stay with her throughout her entire life.
She lived at the pool, was an active child but always had that baby fat. Oh well it is what it is, she should have never let things like that get to her but again, she was a very sensitive kid.
CHAPTER FOUR
When she was eight years old she saw her future husband. He was working in a local restaurant as a dishwasher. One night they all went to dinner at this restaurant. She remembers that she had to use the restroom. Mom grabbed her hand to take her to the restroom and she saw him in the storage closet stacking cans. She remembers this very well. Why? She doesn’t know but he turned around and looked at her with a huge grin and smile on his face. She never forgot it as long as she lived.
She felt her cheeks turn hot, and flush. She had blonde hair and blue eyes her skin was very light so it didn’t take much to make her cheeks turn red, when mom asked her if she was ok, she just said yes and told her mom that the boy had smiled at her. Mom drug her by the hand and said yes he’s cute. She never thought anymore about it. She was eight years old so she didn’t have much to think about other than what barbie was she going to pick later on and if she was going to let little sis play barbies with her or not.
One day she decided to call herself Moon because she had a wild imagination. She loved to pretend and make believe that she was someone else. Or she would always have her imaginary friend. She called her Auntie Guita. Where the name came from and why she made this fictional character up in her imagination is still a mystery to her. But kids will be kids. Or was she crazy?
CHAPTER FIVE
The little town had all four seasons, how lucky she was but did not realize it until she was much older. Again, summers were spent at the community pool. Fall was spent gathering wood for the fireplace and of course plenty of picnics. It was always nice to have a picnic in the woods while gathering wood for the long cold winter ahead. In fact, winter was mostly spent going to school in the snow and hoping it would snow so much! So, a snow day would happen and school would be cancelled so mom could make her and sis snow ice-cream and hot chocolate. Also, back then you could go out and cut down your own Christmas tree as they did every winter. Mom loved Christmas more than Moon did as an adult. Mom always decorated and baked. Dad helped with setting up the tree, gathering the decorations from the garage and Moon and little sis had so much fun helping decorate as well.
Mom always made every holiday special, even Halloween because mom always made Moon and sis their very own costumes what a wonderful memory and treat, she always felt special and always felt that her and sis had the best costumes in town, but little did she know that soon trouble was coming and her and her family’s lives would change forever. Was it for the good? For the bad? It really didn’t matter at the time because Moon felt something was about to change in her life and she was right!
When she turned thirteen that was it! The unlucky number of all numbers. First Moon was told that they were moving into her great grandparents’ house because her great grandpa had passed away and her great grandma was ill and had to move into a nursing home, so mom and dad was going to buy the house for some odd twenty thousand dollars. Moon heard them talking about it, and the current house she had lived in every since she could remember was bought for twelve thousand dollars. She guessed mom and dad had found a buyer for the house for more money than they paid for it so there was extra money to buy the new home.
The new house was across the tracks far away from the swimming pool and her best friend and it was just irritating to her. She did not want to move at all as far as sis was concerned, she was only eight years old so it really didn’t have much of an
