About this ebook

Playing with “s” sounds while teaching about natural history, Sojourne Snail’s Sounding Saga follows a day in the life of a snail. Presented through alliteration and tongue-twisting narration, this children’s book shares a host of valuable information about the standing, sliding, swinging, swimming, and sometimes-channeling-in-sand gastropods.

Sojourne is a recognizable Pacific snail adorned with beautiful colors and a distinct sideband that embellishes her shell’s spiral. Her movements are mostly graceful, causing light to sparkle from her skin’s mirrored, glassy surface.

With QR codes included, this picture book for children shares Sojourne’s story while stimulating the development of curiosity and self-motivation in young children.

To my two granddaughters, Abigail and Madeline, and any other child.

To Dominique and any other parent or teacher.

Standing, sliding, swinging, swimming, and sometimes channeling in sand, snails and slugs are sublime. Snails and slugs, all gastropods, exemplify one of nature’s singular successes. Designed superbly, their colors, shapes, dresses, floats, strings, saws, drills, darts, and snail housings open doors for many lives. Snails, as slugs, use only a single foot; some slide and swim as gracefully as ballet dancers, toe-dancing in their heelless slippers. Land snails spend life searching for greens, muds, and garden and forest spoils, whereas ocean snails search for green algae cells or visceral parts of the smallest sea creatures to saucer-size mussels and tub-size clams. Snails fuel fascination for young and old observers of life and readers alike.
