One Last Thought
INTRODUCTION
The criteria for what makes a great hunting partner surely have plagued humankind for thousands of years. I can only imagine the number of duds who accidentally
fell to their deaths on a hunting trip before there was the thought of being held accountable for murder. If we are being honest, though, I am sure you have thought about kicking the duds off the cliff—metaphorically, of course. I know the thoughts, Man, this guy just won’t shut up, I wish he would pick up his feet, and others. With some people I’ve hunted with, I’ve wondered if I would intervene if they were being attacked by a grizzly.
Of course, these are nothing more than thoughts, and for the record, I absolutely would try to stop him or her from becoming a bear turd. But you get my drift. I believe these thoughts come from an ancient, tribal portion of our DNA. Our ancestors had no time to waste on individuals who did not integrate well into their hunting or gathering society.
A conversation with two of my hunting partners about what makes a good hunting partner inspired me to write this book. I had invited my buddy Dave on an archery elk hunt in Montana. Being from Montana, I knew the area and wanted to repay him for taking me along to hunt hogs at his prized location.
