39581.pngS he looked in the mirror and saw a bright young and beautiful woman. She had never noticed before how it had come to be. She was always rough and tough, never lady like. She brushed her long brown hair way down to her back.
She wondered what her hair would look like being short. Then she thought of other people that they might not like it, or they wouldn’t recognize her. Emily gathered her hair up in her hands to her neck to see what it would look like.
Emily, Emily come down, I need to show you something,
her little sister Kristan called out from the bottom of the stairs.
I’m coming,
Emily called back.
She straightened her yellow checked dress that went all the way down to her feet, and she wore her favourite brown boots that she liked very much. Emily walked down the stairs and met Kristan down at the bottom.
What do you think about my hair being short?
Emily asked her.
Short? No time for that we have to go,
Kristan took her hand and led her outside.
Where are we going?
Emily asked.
Here he is,
Kristan introduced her to a tall dark and handsome man.
Kristan, what is going on?
Emily asked.
I have to go back inside,
Kristan ran back into the house, leaving Emily bewilderment with the man.
I’m so sorry please forgive my sister, I didn’t know what she was up to,
Emily apologized.
That is alright madam, my name is John Hurts. I am pleased to meet you,
John smiled as Emily’s eyes lit up with joy.
Emily always liked a man who smiled back. It made her feel happy with butterflies in her stomach. She would sink down sighing with glowing eyes staring at him.
Please to meet you too,
Emily could only say.
His blue eyes gave out a twinkle as he brushed away a strand of dark brown hair from his face.
Would you like to get a coffee or some kind of drink with me?
John asked in an English accent voice.
Oh, I really don’t know we only just met. And I don’t go out with strangers,
Emily said.
Well, that’s a good idea to have a drink and get to know each other? Then we won’t be strangers anymore,
John said.
I still don’t know, you haven’t quite convinced me yet,
Emily said.
Okay, how about if I treat you to a drink I will pay for you,
John tried again.
And something to eat?
Emily asked with a smile.
Yes, and something to eat,
John smiled back.
Emily took his hand and they walked down the street. She was thinking that this could work between them, and it was all thanks to Kristan. They stopped at a small coffee shop with wooden tables and chairs. There were some outside as well inside. He ordered a coffee while Emily ordered a drink and a muffin.
Would you like sit inside or outside?
John asked.
I think it might be nice to sit outside,
Emily said.
Outside it is,
he said.
He pulled her chair out for her and she sat down. Emily’s eyes wandered about. For some reason she could not look at John. She was too much attracted to him. She felt like a school girl being all shy in front of people.
Emily,
John began to say when the waitress came over.
Is there anything else you would like?
the waitress asked.
Emily?
John asked.
No thank you,
Emily said softly.
Emily, I like you a lot and if it’s okay with you, I would like to see you again?
John sipped his coffee waiting eagerly for her answer.
I’m not sure John I will have to think about it,
Emily said picking up her drink.
I hope it won’t be too long,
John said.
We will see.
Emily finally looked at him and smiled.
John walked Emily back to the house and stopped outside her front door when she turned around and looked at him as John kissed her on the cheeks.
I had a lovely time and hope we can do this again sometime,
he took her hand and gave it a soft kiss.
He smiled and left without Emily saying a word. She watched him go before she went inside. The next day was the big festival of the town. Everyone and anyone would be there. It was the biggest event of the year and Emily was looking forward to it. She wondered if John would be there or not. She was still thinking whether to go out with him. She hadn’t known him for very long.
A few hours later Emily and Kristan were at the festival. Kristan went over to the games while Emily walked around twirling her umbrella. Suddenly she stopped when she saw John in front of her.
I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there,
Emily apologized.
I bumped into Kristan and she told me you were over here,
he said. There was a moment’s pause between them before John spoke.
You look beautiful,
he said.
Thank you,
Emily blushed.
Emily, come with me to the big merry go round,
Kristan walked up to her and tugged on her dress.
Kristan, please John is here,
Emily said.
Ask him to come along too,
Kristan said.
John would you like to come with us?
Emily asked.
Yes I would love to,
John said.
On the merry go round John was eager to hold Emily’s hand. Kristan was having a lovely time and never noticed what John was up to.
May I hold your hand?
John asked.
Yes,
Emily said without hesitation.
John took her hand and held it in his. He felt good about it and smiled when she smiled back. Emily started to feel comfortable with John he made her happy. His blue eyes twinkling at her was her favourite thing. She wanted to stare at him all day.
When the merry go round stopped Emily let go of his hand. They walked around eating cotton candy all day.
Emily, I’m tired I want to go home,
Kristan rubbed her eyes.
I’m sorry John we have to go,
Emliy picked up Kristan in her arms and walked away.
Wait,
John said but she didn’t wait for him to say goodbye to them.
The next day Emily met her friends at the Cafe. She was so excited to see them. She walked in and saw them sitting down in the booth. Karen saw her and waved.
How are you all?
Emily asked sitting down next to Kathryn.
So, who’s the gorgeous man you were with at the festival?
Karen asked with a big grin across her face.
How did you know that?
Emily asked.
We both saw you at the festival with Kristan,
Kathryn said.
And you didn’t come over and say hello? I could have introduced you to him,
Emily said.
So, who is he and where does he come from?
Kathryn asked looking at her with beaming green eyes.
His name is John Hurts and I don’t know where he comes from,
Emily said.
You don’t know much about him do you?
Karen said.
I’ve only just met him it’s too late to ask questions like that,
Emily said.
Are you going out with him again?
Kathryn asked.
I don’t know maybe, why?
Emily asked.
We just want you to be safe with him that’s all,
Karen said.
Thank you Karen but I will be okay,
Emily said.
They spoke about their days when their meals came over. Emily was starving and started to eat quickly.
Emily, slow down you will get heart burn,
Kathryn laughed.
I’m so hungry I feel like I haven’t eaten for a week,
Emily smiled at them.
Suddenly John came into the Cafe when Karen spotted him first. He went straight up to the counter and ordered a coffee.
Guess who just walked in?
Karen said.
Who?
Emily asked.
Over there sitting at the counter,
she pointed with her finger. Emily turned around slowly and saw him.
Oh my word, what am I going to do Karen? I can’t let him see me like this, I look like a mess I’m not dressed up for him,
Emily panic.
Calm down Emily he didn’t see you. He just walked out the door,
Karen said.
Phew, that was too close,
Emily sighed with relief.
Why is it so important to look nice for John?
Kathryn asked.
I don’t know it’s just a thing we had when we were growing up. We had to look nice and tidy if we saw a man,
Emily said.
That’s silly you can be just yourself. And you don’t look like a mess either,
Karen said.
I know it’s silly but that’s how we were brought up by our parents. Even Kristan had to look nice and tidy too,
Emily said.
Well, let’s go and have some fun,
Karen said.
They walked out of the Cafe when they bumped into John again.
John, we have to stop meeting like this,
Emily giggled being shy in front of him.
Emily, nice to see you again,
he smiled and walked away.
Why didn’t you introduce us?
Karen slapped her on her arm.
I don’t know I just got all shy around him,
Emily said.
The next day Kristan and Emily went to the park. They spent some time together when Kristan fell out of the tree and screamed.
Kristan!
Emily ran over to her.
My leg it hurts,
she cried.
I will have to take you to the hospital,
Emily picked her up and carried her.
Hospital? No, Emily,
Kristan pleaded with her.
You may have broken it or sprained it. It’s best to get it checked out,
Emily said.
Emily got to the hospital and a nurse came out with a wheelchair. She put Kristan in it and wheeled her to the next room.
Emily!
Kristan got scared.
Its alright Kristan I’m here, I will just wait outside for you,
Emily assured her.
For hours Emily waited for Kristan to come out. No one had bothered to come out and tell her what was going on, or if Kristan was okay. Suddenly she spotted John down the corridor. He was wearing a white coat and she was about to go to him, when Cynthia walked up to him. Emily was about to go when John turned around and saw her.
Emily? Are you sick?
he came over to her.
No, it’s Kristan she fell out of a tree and hurt her leg,
she tried to hold back the tears.
I’m sure she will be alright,
John said.
No one has come out to tell me anything about her, or if she is okay. I’ve been waiting for hours,
Emily said with a bit of a shaky voice.
Calm down Emily I can see what they are doing if you like?
John asked.
You work here?
Emily asked wiping a tear away from her eyes.
Yes, I’m a doctor here and I work here at the hospital,
he said.
I had no idea,
Emily smiled.
Would you like me to go and see her?
John asked.
Yes please, she went in that room over there and hasn’t come out,
Emily pointed with her finger.
I will be right back,
John put his hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
Thank you,
Emily said with such a relief. In a few minutes John came back and Emily thought it was quick. Maybe
