We, as a group, need to begin the process of revamping the delivery of education at the local, county, state, and national level. I think it would help to focus on what works and then provide the resources to accomplish the task at hand, which is to care for students. Education should be in the forefront of any planning when it comes to decisions that impact students regardless of age, location, or demographic.

Schools that are constantly and cooperatively providing kids with care will witness adequate development of each individual. Learning is to think of present conditions to achieve future results and future consequences to present conditions. One of the most effective ways to teach students to think is to find intrinsic activities for an individual or group to accomplish learning.

This book is dedicated to all the teachers who make an effort day in and day out to make each student feel that they are included within their class and school community.

Special thanks go to my parents who provided a supportive upbringing to a family of eight, to my brothers and sisters who have been there all along, and to my husband, George, and two wonderful kids, Jeremy and Kenny, who have encouraged me throughout my career as an educator. I’m grateful for my inner circle of friends (you know who you are) who motivate me to fulfill my passion for education.

I love, love, love to teach, to see that Aha! moment when a student finally gets it (we need more Aha! moments), and last but not least, to be part of the greater community of educators who influence schools and impact students each day.

My career began in 1980 at Hillside, New Jersey, school district and continues to date. I began my career as a special-education teacher and had many different classes with various disabilities. After fifteen years in the classroom, I returned to college to receive a master’s in education and certification as a Learning-Disabilities Teacher Consultant. I then became a member of the Child Study Team, conducting evaluations and working collaboratively with teachers and parents as well as, my favorite part, working with kids. The forty years of experience have exposed me to pretty much everything under the sun related to education. As you can imagine, there have been many changes, developments, and connections with students, parents, fellow teachers, principals, administrators, and superintendents. I’ve also been a member of the Board of Education in my home district, East Hanover, New Jersey, since 2000.

I felt the need to share my experience as an educator. The purpose of writing this book is to try to make a positive impact on education. Today schools appear to be fragmented by too much going on at once, which result in disruptions. I feel there are recent changes that result in confusion and lend to real work to refocus and take CARE of our students.

My hope is to have a ripple effect on current educational practices that take away from student growth. Students need to have a voice and be part of the process. The kids need heart and soul as well as mind and body. Educators have a responsibility to stabilize learning experiences to create a new generation of students to become lifelong learners who can achieve twenty-first-century collaborative skills.
