The Blooming of Rose - Kitt Foxx

    CHAPTER 1

ROSE ANN HARRIS was the first born to Leah Rey Rodgers Harris a young mother that had suffered the loss of her husband Dale Martin in the war. She had not completely recovered from that very bad experience as a twenty two. Year old, her life had been upside down for over a year now.

There was however a glimmer of hope though for Leah she had met and was having conversations with a young man where she worked his name was Mike Harris, he had listened to her talk about the war, her husband’s death after only seven months of marriage, he was sympathetic and brushed her hair back with his hand as her tears fell recounting her loss, They began having coffee together in the cafeteria before work in the mornings, and lunch together sometimes, after a few weeks he ask her out to dinner one night, and she learned that he too was in the Army and had been wounded in action and was out on a Medical discharge, and had only been working there a few months in the maintenance department as a Air conditioning technician, he was single and loved his job.

The plant they worked at was for a large pharmaceutical company that manufactured several drugs for military and domestic use. The temperature and humidity had to be carefully controlled or the product would be ruined before the drying process was completed. It was a high tech job that paid good wages and Leah was extremely talented on her machine and very happy there. Mike also received an excellent salary. He had received his Air Conditioning training the first year in the Army and was considered an expert on this particular type of equipment that was in operation here at this plant. This casual affair moved along as the two of them got more comfortable with each other every day. After about six months they could be considered a couple, they enjoyed each other’s company and spent most of their spare time together, and at some point realized that they might just possibly be in love. Both were willing and ready to set the date, but wanted to have a home to go to. So they entered into an agreement to saving all they could jointly as a down payment on a home, and after six more months were married at her church in a small private ceremony with only a few close friends in attendance, the small home they had purchased a month before and had now furnished, was now their home. Life was now much better for them both, . . . and their hearts were full again, love was in the air and . . . life was again a Joy.

THE WAR WAS OVER!!! Life could again become normal, and the war will soon forgotten everyone said, but those that lost loved ones still mourned their losses. Leah and Mike were both now in danger of loosening their jobs now that the demand for the products they produced was reduced dramatically . . . by the war ending, The layoffs had started, the employees with the least seniority were the first to go, and continued downward, They both began the search for new employment, Mike secured a position with a large auto parts manufacturer first, Leah was not as fortunate, she was not able to find anything acceptable for her experience, thousands of people were affected by the reduction of war material’s, so she became a housewife. Three years later she was a mother, her little baby Rose Ann Harris arrived in this world red and crying. She was her mother’s dream, and as she grew her inquisitive nature became apparent and she was a fast learner, at age five a little sister Joanne Rey joined her, The little two bedroom home was now becoming a little too small, so the search was on for another much larger home. Mike was now into supervision at his job and his salary was much improved from past years, and their savings account was now adequate for the task ahead, a nice down payment for the new home. The search was on.

Weekends were now spent looking for that perfect location, and that perfect. Home, it was much harder to find now that they could afford one, plus there were a lot of people searching for a home now that the men were home from the war, couples were marrying and many were having to build their homes the market was not sufficient for the demand. The small home they were in sold rapidly, only two weeks on the market, and the buyers were impatient to take possession and move in, they were hoping for a little more time to shop around. But that was not possible, homes were selling fast. They never found that dream house but settled on a practical choice that fitted the family size, bought it and moved in. The girls were growing so fast Leah could hardly believe it, she was an excellent seamstresses and, made many of the girl’s clothes, and of course Joanne got lots of hand me downs, and Rose got the newer things. Rose was a very talented young lady, she loved to dance and even at six had a great singing voice that impressed adults, hearing little girls singing again after this long horrible war was heart-warming.

First grade for Rose was an event for her to demonstrate to her teacher how talented she was, her teacher was amazed at all the things she did, all the wonderful little plays they had, Rose was the star singing and dancing her way into your heart. Another little Shirley Temple for sure. School was a snap until she reached her ninth grade, she evidently was not aware of the importance of studying, her world crashed, she failed her ninth grade, and she was devastated. Her first disappointment in life. After the summer break she went back with a new attitude, and pulled straight A’ s for each semester, and continued this for the remainder of high school. She was a very private little lady and only had two or three boys attempt to date her during that time, she was athletic and played basketball for four seasons and was good player, but not a great player, she considered it exercise more. Or less she said… Joanne had a problem getting close to the grades her sister did, she finally managed to set her own goals and stop chasing her sister, the rivalry was over, she became her own person . . . at fifteen. Joanne was more popular with the boys and dated more of them and was in the girls chorus and didn’t even entertain ever doing sports. That was for Tom Boys she thought, I’m a girl.

Roses problems with boys became an issue when she called her mom from a gasoline station to come get her one night, she had bailed out of her dates car after an altercation with him, and she slammed his face into the steering wheel, causing bloodshed. The boys all called her Bloody Rose after that. And only the brave ones ask her out, she was a beautiful young lady, with all of her father’s manners and features, and demanded respect or passed your action. Joanne however was more like her mother, quiet and reserved, not at all like her fireball sister. However the two of them were very compatible and hung out together. With their other friends and both learned to play tennis, and working at playing golf without a pro. to teach them, Rose soon wanted to find a job after school she was bored she said.

    CHAPTER 2

Her break came from Lorna a class mate that worked at a local health clinic, and she landed a job in the records and files area there and was happy with it, she of course wanted to know all about how everything about her job., She eventually became a nurses aid, and an excellent one and after another year expressed her desire to go to medical college she wanted to become a Doctor she said, the four doctors at the clinic after talking among themselves made a deal with her and agreed to pay half of her tuition if her father Mike and her mom could furnish the other half, but she had to agree to stay and work the clinic with the Doctors that owned it for a period of five years afterward. She agreed to do that to become a doctor. Mike and her mom didn’t know if this was a blessing or a curse she was entering into. She would be twenty five and a Doctor when she graduated, was this possible for our daughter they wondered. The discussions were long and hard every night, for a few weeks until it was decided that it was very hard not to take advantage of this opportunity the Doctors had offered her, because of the enthusiasm that Rose had for this opportunity. So about the decision was made, now to move onto the choice of the college for her to attend. They were finally able to decide to attend the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, one of the oldest in the United States, and one of the best. She started in the fall, mom and dad drove her there and all the necessary personal effects and got her settled into her dormitory with another young lady named Harriet Merkle. It was hard for her to say goodbye to her mom and Dad, This was going to be a five year agreement on her part, failure was not an option to her. Five years was a very long time young lady.

This is the start of a new life for me, I’m alone here now, my Mom and. Dad are going back to Euless Texas and I miss them already, and they have only been gone an hour, until they visit me again!!! I’m alone. Medical College here I am, I’m going to become a Doctor if it kills me she thought. My roomie name is Harriet and is in her third semester just ahead of me, which is good, she is a lot of help and advice for me, and she is very helpful in getting me into the social circles here, it’s mostly all business here, no men, or boys to detract us from learning, we have to go into the Falls (town) to even see a man or boy. We don’t have a lot of free time for that. Weekends are not supposed to be wasted on the fun in town, lots of studying and review to be done, this is College, not high school, I’m being reminded every weekend, work, work, work girl, no time for playing, get busy.

It’s been four months now since I left home, mom and Dad have called me a few times but not visited, money is too tight mom says their half of my tuition has wrecked their budget, mom has opened a beauty shop at home in my room and is helping Dad with the expense, everything is OK and they are still doing fine, not to worry she says. I’m so sorry I didn’t think this all the way thru Mom and Dad are having to cut back on a lot of things to let me do this. I’m really involved here now and everything is beginning to make sense to me, I’m learning so much!!! The weekend breaks are becoming more important and the extra sleep and rest is so welcome. Mom called me Sunday, Harriet is going to be a fantastic Doctor Mom, she is so good at this, and I’m afraid some of her is rubbing off on me, mom, I’m getting so serious about this situation Because it’s just so real to me . . . im really getting involved and I love it.

I’ve met a guy in town, his name is Doyle Wilson we met at the roller skate rink Saturday afternoon, we went to a public swimming pool and cooled off, this Sunday afternoon also. It’s really warm and the humidity here is terrible this summer, not at all like last year. He is twenty three and very nice, he lives here near town and works with his parents they own a construction company here in the Falls I have met his family, they are old time Pennsylvania residents his mom told me all the way back to the Quakers and laughed. They have a huge beautiful home here on the outskirts of town with a very large patio where we play cards and board games together, they are almost like family. Doyle has a nice almost new Mustang convertible car and the country side here is so green and beautiful mom, I wish you could see it and there are some mountains off in the distance, great viewing from the convertible. I’m doing great at the College I’m almost an A student now, some of the lab work is confusing at times, but Harriet is a real Brain on that, and encourages me and explains it to me, over, over and over!!!! Until I get it. She is great even if I do get agitated at her at times, i know she is only trying to help me, and I do really appreciate her time and effort with me. I really got lucky to have her for a roomie.

This will be my third year starting this fall and the winter I dread, I’m not a cold weather person, I’m from the DFW area of Texas and it’s much milder in the winter, mom and Dad were visitors this summer, it was so very nice to see them Doyle’s parents insisted they stay at their home for that week, it was grand to have them with me again. Doyle is pressing me to get engaged and has ask me a dozen times to marry him, and I’m running out of excuses, I just don’t want marriage and children at this point in my life and it would interfere with my dream of becoming a Doctor, I can tell he either don’t really care or understand my position on this and it upsets me, I just wish he was more understanding, after our last conversation about this, I’m not sure where I am in his mind. I’m slowly rethinking our relationship, and I don’t care for what I see ln my future with him. Am I just a sexual object to him, he has been pressing me for sex on our last two dates, I’m nor ready for that type of relationship with him or anyone else until I’m secure in my medical practice, and i am successful, then and only then will I be wanting a husband and children, this is my life, and my dream in life. After the summer break next year, I’m going to have a new understanding about this situation because it’s affecting my studies and my attitude and I have to stay fixed on college. I didn’t enroll here to meet Mr. wonderful. I’m going to be a Doctor Mom.

I’m very fond of Doyle we attend church together on Sundays, and if he will wait around for a few years I would love to have him be the father of my children if not, then it has been great Doyle, later!!!. I’m in my third year here now, over half way to my degree, I’m pleased and my mom and Dad are counting on me, they have been so supportive and helped with the financial aid that I could not have done this without and the Doctors at the clinic, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I wanted so badly, and I can’t let Doyle or anyone else destroy this opportunity for me, I have dedicated my youth to this dream and I’m not going to fail. Doyle evidently don’t understand the importance of this to me. I really wish he did, his family is wealthy and he just don’t realize what my family is giving up for me.

I certainly don’t want to think that he don’t care. I would like his support, and if he would join me in my quest, and help me emotionally like my parents do. They
