About this ebook

Mount Afurika is a book of short stories and poems which subtly narrate the colonization of Africa, some of the struggles and challenges the African people are facing in the post-independence era. The book is inspired by the political disillusionment which followed soon after independence, the suppression of human rights and freedoms, specifically in Zimbabwe. The book also talks about contemporary issues like love, crime and traditional beliefs. These themes have been explored using some African oral literature genres like folk tale, songs and proverbs together with the traditional short story and poetry genres.

Author

Shadreck Kagoro

I was born in 1968 and grew up in the rural areas of Zimbabwe up until my early primary education which was partly disturbed by the war of liberation. My family moved into the city of Harare where I did part of my primary education, secondary education and a diploma in theology. I studied English and Communication studies with Zimbabwe Open University. I worked in the United Methodist Church, and two local Christian-based humanitarian organisations in Zimbabwe which focussed on HIV/AIDS and community development work. I have moved to the United States of America to study Master of Arts in Leadership with Asbury Theological Seminary. I am married to Middiah, and we have two children; Tsitsi and Tungamirai.

Toro’s recovery

Toro cringed his face as he slowly pulled himself out of the heap of blankets with the assistance of his wife, Tsitsi. He sat against the bare brick wall breathing hard, his wasted chest heaving up and down as if there wasn’t enough air for his lungs. His eyes, which had sunk deep in their sockets, shifted from his wife to the steaming porridge which his wife was now stirring and blowing over. Tsitsi took a spoonful of the porridge to check on the temperature, sugar, and most importantly the herb which had been sprinkled sparingly. Satisfied she advanced to the patient.

Outside, the sun had just started its journey westwards with determination. Insects, with their limps and wings warmed, hopped and flew about in the meadow. Birds sang heartily, flew from tree to tree, exchanging tidings of the new day. In short, it was a beautiful morning in this small village of Nyakabau.
