Explore Maritimes & Newfoundland
Medieval Bruges is one of Europe’s most romantic destinations. Canals meander around gabled almshouses, Gothic churches, world-class art galleries and boutique hotels, all packaged in a central district less than 2km (1.25 miles) across.
Atlantic Canada is perhaps one of the most startlingly beautiful regions of Canada. Here are the achingly lonely beaches of Nova Scotia, the distinctive sense of humour and charming friendliness of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, the old-world, Prince Edward Island farmers, and the graceful elegance of New Brunswick’s towns. The French and British fought over the three Maritime provinces for almost two hundred years, and today the French-speaking Acadian population remains culturally distinct. After the American Revolution, Loyalists flooded Atlantic Canada, adding another cultural layer. Newfoundland and Labrador’s early history was dominated by the seasonal cod, whale and seal fisheries, with year-round outports
eventually settled by hardy English and Irish fishermen giving the province much of its character today.

Covid-19 Updates
In early 2020, Covid-19 swept across the globe, being categorized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. While travelling in Canada, be sure to heed all local laws, travel advice and hygiene measures; flouting these means risking your own health but can also put a strain on local communities and their medical infrastructure. While we've done all we can to make sure this guide is accurate and up to date, permanent closures and changed opening hours are likely in the wake of coronavirus, so be sure to check ahead.
Geography and Layout
The area covered in this book is vast, some half a million square kilometres, much of it isolated wilderness fronting Canada’s eastern Atlantic coast. The ocean, and especially the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of St Lawrence, dominates life here, with the port of Halifax in Nova Scotia the region’s biggest city. The tours in this book begin with the port of St John’s, then proceed geographically across Newfoundland and Labrador from east to west, taking in the most popular and attraction-rich areas of the province. The focus then shifts to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and finally New Brunswick.

You’ll need a car to make the most out of the area, as public transport is limited to a handful of long-distance bus lines and railway routes. Most cities are small enough to explore on foot, though local taxis are usually easy to find.
History
It is thought Vikings visited the region, calling it ‘Vinland’, in around AD 1000, though they didn’t stay long and had little impact – the Beothuk and Mi’kmaq peoples who had lived here for centuries were only displaced by later waves of
