My name is Sasha. I grew up in New Orleans, LA. My last year of high school I was pregnant with my first child, and walked across the stage to receive my high school diploma when my son was five months old. After high school I hope of becoming a nurse. My third semester I found out I was pregnant with my second child and dropped out. My third child was born a year later, and my fourth child was born ten months later. I did not have time for school because I had four babies to take care of. In 2009 at 27 years old I had my fifth child. This was the same year that I became a certified nurse assistant, I just had to get into the medical field. Nothing was going to stop me from pursuing my dreams. Having kids young set me back for a major comeback. 2012 I enrolled myself back in college, graduated in 2014 with my Associate Degree in General Studies, 2015 I enrolled at Unitech Academy in the LPN program, and graduated in 2016 with my second degree in nursing. I continued my education after nursing school because I love to learn, I took every English class because I love writing. May 2019 my first son and I graduated on the same day, that was the best feeling in the world. I received my degree in Fine Arts/Science. I love to cook, and now I have my own Catering Business.

CHAPTER 1
S ummer 2004—that’s the day my new life started. I wasn’t just another American teenager but a Guyanese American teenager growing up in Richmond, Virginia, with my two brothers Robert and Daniel, my father Arthur, and his wife Allison. It was the morning of July 31, and I remember hearing voices outside. I looked through my bedroom, and there were kids outside, screaming and playing.
It had been four weeks since I had moved to Virginia, and my birthday had just passed two days ago. I was thirteen years old now, living in a new place without Leah around. I was starting to feel like Eddie Murphy in that movie coming to America (you can laugh because I am). My brothers and I left Guyana on a new adventure; that adventure brought us to Virginia, and it wasn’t for a summer vacation—it was permanently. In some way, I was not only freaking out in my head but also feeling overwhelm at the same time because I convinced myself things would be different now that I was living with Arthur.
A part of me was also waiting to hear Leah calling me to help with breakfast. But the call never came, and so I just laid back down in the bed; I didn’t even turn the TV on. It felt so good to just lay there and close my eyes; I didn’t have to make breakfast or get water from the river. When Arthur had asked me and Dan if we wanted to live with him, I didn’t even think twice before I said yes. It’s not like I didn’t love or enjoy living with Leah in Guyana, but I missed my father, and I wanted to live with him for a change. Growing up in Guyana, I barely saw Arthur because he lived in the State. I would call him whenever I could, and that’s usually when I went into town.
There were times when Leah would have me call Arthur for money. I would tell him I need school fee, school trip, school photo, or even schoolbooks. Arthur would send the money the following day. Leah would then buy grocery, and if money was left over, she would pay for James, Dan, and Karter to attend school. Leah would even get her hair done; of course, she would buy the hair and do her own hair. Leah had a party side to her, and boy did she
