    Solomon Asks for Wisdom

Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life. (1 Kings 3:7–14 NIV)

    Introduction

    Why Read This Book?

Think like a King was written for men who lead. It is meant for fathers and men who need fathers. It was written for the man who is committed to achieving his purpose in life and is willing to pay the price for victory. It was written for the man who desires lasting success and riches. It was written for the man seeking inner harmony.

    It was written for you.

Think like a King leads you through a daily reflection of the words of King Solomon, who was inspired to write words of inspiration and instruction to the future sons of his kingdom.

Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. (Proverbs 4:1–3 NIV)

Solomon, whose name means peaceful, was the third king of Israel; he reigned for forty years (ca. 971–931 BC). He was also called Jedidiah, beloved of God, by the prophet Nathan (1 Chronicles 22:9 NIV).

King Solomon was born under dubious circumstances. Similar to many men who may read this, he had to rise above the circumstances of his birth to gain the respect of others. He did not let his beginning cloud his future.

Do you need to rise above your circumstances? Let Solomon lead you to the path to success and inner harmony.

King Solomon acquired every possession men say they want: money, power, success, chariots, servants, women, and a kingdom. He also acquired every leadership skill men might not know they need: wisdom, understanding, discretion, knowledge, truth, faith, discipline, focus, diligence, imagination, and critical thinking.

He realized through the wisdom he gained from his mistakes and life experiences that what men need will get them what they want if they apply faith and truth to themselves and their environments. He felt so strongly that he wrote it down in the book of Proverbs and the book of Ecclesiastes. Twenty-nine of the thirty-one chapters in the book of Proverbs are attributed to Solomon, so I encourage you to open your mind to his examples, recommendations, and instructions. Learning to listen to wisdom is the mark of a wise king. Are you ready to Think like a King?

Listening may cut your travel time to success and happiness in half. Would you appreciate a map to help find shortcuts and avoid shortfalls? Do you want success? Are you chosen to lead? I believe you are. If you are a father, business owner, supervisor, brother, or neighbor, you are a leader. Be committed to the continuous improvement of yourself and your skills; that will accelerate your move toward success.

Think like a King incorporates Napoleon Hill’s Laws of Success with King Solomon’s philosophy and God’s Word. The combination will give you explicit instructions on what steps to take to shape your thoughts, habits, and actions into those that reflect the wisdom of men who have impacted the world and achieved their goals.

If you can take control of your thinking, you can take control of your life. Open your mind to receive wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and truth. If you do, all the tools necessary for success will come to you.

Laws of Success and Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill (1883–1970) developed the Laws of Success because industrialist Andrew Carnegie challenged him to study the wealthiest and most successful individuals in the early twentieth century to determine what made them successful. His initial research covered a twenty-year period. The goal was to provide a roadmap that helped individuals identify shortcuts and avoid shortfalls while moving toward defined goals and life success.

Hill’s research identified seventeen success principles that became the foundation of his Laws of Success. These habits and character traits combine with one another and provide the fuel that moves you toward success.
