    Unfinished Foolishness - Nathan Cummings

    Chapter One

So you think I am a fool. You are the fool to think that I am going to send you all that money, Jack said to himself. He went downstairs and got a beer out of the refrigerator. He had not touched alcohol in over a year.

Sitting on the patio, Jack determined that he was out over $7,000. There was no way he would ever get his money back. There was no inheritance to fall back on. There were no more texts with Mary for a week.

Zoe was moving on with her life. Since Jack moved out, there was hardly any furniture. Herman had bought her a washer and dryer and assorted living room furniture. Thank you, Dad. The furniture is wonderful, and I am happy with the washer and dryer. I just wish Jack had not taken it with him, Zoe said on the telephone.

He should have left everything, Herman said. I think he is a fool for treating you so poorly.

It is not his fault. We just grew apart. He wanted a caretaker, not a wife, Zoe said.

I think he had the best wife he could ever find, Herman replied.

Now I am free to follow my heart. I am going to partner with Ian. We will merge everything into his practice. I can do almost everything online, so I can be home for the girls, Zoe remarked.

I am glad you got the designations. At least Jack was smart in encouraging that for you, Herman said.

Ian and I will be successful, Zoe said.

Goodbye for now, Herman said as he hung up the phone.

Zoe was glad that was over. Now it was time to check in with Ian. She connected with him on video chat.

Good morning, Zoe. How are you today? We have a lot to go over. I received a large check yesterday, and I have to show you how we record transactions of that amount, Ian said.

Hi, Ian. I missed you and wish we could have another seminar to attend together, Zoe said.

There will be plenty of time for that, Ian replied.

Tell me about this transaction, Zoe said.

We have to record the deposit in my other company. Then we record the stocks and mutual funds purchased in the normal way. This is going to be your responsibility from now on. You will have to keep both sets of books for the two companies on your computer at your house. It should be easy for you to keep it all straight since you are a tax expert and have your security designation, Ian said.

You mean each transaction will be in the two companies’ records? Zoe asked.

Double-entry accounting, Ian said with a smile.

Zoe was not sure what was going on, but she trusted Ian. They looked at each other in that special way. Each knew what that meant. Zoe was tired of taking her clothes off. She just wanted to work and make money. This would have to stop. But Zoe and Ian would only continue and get more involved.

Mary was sad that she called Jack a fool. She would just have to move on. Maybe she could find another man who would love her the way Jack did.

After a few days, Jack returned to the dating site. Maybe Mary would set up her profile again. He searched through thousands of profiles, but there was no Mary. He would look for somebody else to talk to. However, his heart was not in the search. There were few interesting choices and many not so interesting. Then it happened—another beautiful picture of a young woman in the senior section. I wondered, If I contact her, would it cost me another $7,000?

Hello, Gretel. I saw your picture on the dating site and had to contact you. You do not look sixty-eight. How old are you really, Jack texted. She had her phone number available on her profile.

Hi. I am really thirty-one and am a student in the university. How old are you? Gretel asked.

Old enough to be your father. I am forty years older than you. That is way too old for you. I am going to stop before we get started, Jack said.

Don’t stop talking to me. Age is just a number. My grandma always says it is the heart that counts, Gretel replied. If it doesn’t matter to you, it does not matter to me.

Jack thought that he had heard these words before. Where are you living? Jack asked.

I am living in Accra, Ghana. I live with my grandma. I have lived here all my life. Where are you living? Gretel asked.

In the States, Jack replied. So it was another woman on the other side of the world. This one in Africa.

That is nice. I always wanted to go to the States, Gretel said.

Jack wondered what that statement meant. Was she hinting on Jack paying her way to fly here? The two exchanged texts for about thirty minutes.

What time is it in Ghana? Jack asked. He wanted to know about time zone and early texts. He had learned his lesson.

I am four hours ahead of you, Gretel answered.

Jack thought that he would get a little more sleep. He wondered if he should even start this. It would be another situation that would not turn out well. Then it happened.

Here are some pictures of me. I hope you like them and think that I am pretty, Gretel said.

There were six pictures of a woman just as beautiful as Mary. She was exquisite. How lucky can one man be? Jack said to himself.

    Chapter Two

The next few days were filled with texts between Jack and Gretel. They got to know a lot about each other, and Jack felt she was a smart and caring person. It did not hurt that she was easy on the eyes. She was going to graduate in August, and she was hoping to come to the States after the graduation.

Gretel, tell me about your family in Ghana, Jack asked.

I live with my grandma. I told you that. I have a sister who is married and lives here. I do have an uncle who lives in the States, Gretel answered.

Have you ever been to the States? Jack asked.

No. I want to live with you in the States. Can I live with you? Are you single, or do you have a girlfriend? Gretel said.

We are getting a little ahead of ourselves. We hardly know each other and have never met, Jack said.

I know you. I love you. I want to marry you. I want you to be the owner and master of my body, Gretel said.

That is something new, Jack thought.

Gretel, I would be honored to have you as my wife. I have to ask you again. I am forty years older than you. Are you sure that will not be a problem? When you are sixty-one, I will be a hundred and one. You will be saddled with having to take care of an old man, Jack said.

I love you. You are my king. I will take care of you no matter how old you get, Gretel said.

OK. I will marry you. Are you sure you want to come live with me? Jack questioned.

It is my dream to come to America. I will learn all I can about the state you live in, Gretel answered.

They continued texting for a while. Gretel sent more pictures, including one that was suggestive. It drove Jack wild. If I am master of her body, this body is everything a man could ever hope for.

    Mary spent the
