    INTRODUCTION

God still speaks to his children and his people. He gives us promises, visions, and revelations concerning his plan and purposes for our lives. When these revelations and prophecies are given, they are meant to be fulfilled, as the Bible says none of his words shall come back to him void and unfulfilled. However, between the promise and fulfillment, we are bound to have some unique experiences. The time interval between the revelation and fulfillment is an interesting but usually painful journey that invariably becomes a training to ensure that, when we get to that promised Jerusalem, we can stand. We must successfully navigate this journey.

The journey to fulfillment begins with an encounter with God. This can be through a word, a vision, a dream, a prophetic utterance, or a revelation. This reveals the plan of God for you. As always, the plan and purpose of God for you as one of his children is good, to bring you to his glorious expected end.

In Separated Unto Fulfillment, we look at the various stages of this journey to fulfillment and how we can successfully navigate them in holiness to ensure that only the counsel of God is fulfilled concerning our journey in life.

Knowing and receiving the plan and purpose of God is a good beginning. However, it is the end that matters and determines if the journey has been a success or failure. The Bible rightly tells us that better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof.

The next stage in this journey is the wilderness experience, for an opportunity to humble oneself, learn at the feet of Jesus, and be intimate with him. A successful travail of the wilderness experience will result in divine empowerment and anointing, which puts the devil in his proper place and ensures divinely assured success.

The journey to Jerusalem typifies the journey to the Promised Land and the various challenges on the way and even when you get to your Promised Land. Every stage of this journey requires separation, which is synonymous with holiness. The Bible states that, without holiness, no man will see the Lord.

Read this book prayerfully to understand your level on this journey, and let the Lord open your eyes to the next stage on your journey. As you read, the Lord will guide you to a glorious fulfillment of his promises for your life in Jesus’ name.

    CHAPTER 1

    PROPHECIES, DREAMS, AND VISIONS

PROPHECIES AND PROPHETIC utterances are given to be fulfilled. For every word of prophecy given, there is a purpose for which the word has come forth. Prophecy in the Old Testament is also called prediction. In other words, Old Testament prophecies are predictive in nature. The Easton’s Bible Dictionary defines prophecy as a miracle of knowledge, a declaration or description or representation of something future, beyond the power of human sagacity to foresee, discern, or conjecture.

The place of fulfillment or performance in the determination of the authenticity of a prophecy or word of prophecy cannot be overemphasized. The prophet Jeremiah gives us a simple test of prophecy, which revolves around the performance or otherwise of a word given. It is not only a test of the prophecy, but also of the prophet. Jeremiah 28:9 says, The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.

The authority of the prophet rests on the source of the prophecy, whether from God or any alternative source, which could include the spirit or heart of man, the devil and his agents, or simply the flesh. The fulfillment or performance of a prophecy authenticates the prophet as a man of God and proves that the prophecy is from God.

The alternative source of prophecy, which the prophet will usually ascribe to the living God to gain affirmation and acceptance with the people, is also roundly condemned by prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah 23:14–32 says,

I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah. Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it? Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.

The vices noted here, which are associated with prophecies or prophets not of God, are committing adultery; lying and walking in lies; strengthening the hands of evildoers rather than reprimanding their evil ways; encouraging wickedness and trivializing the judgment of God; prophesying profaneness into all the lands; and professing peace to those who despise and hate God. These are like Sodom and Gomorrah before God and have the same fate, except they repent. These live and contend with the living God, who has declared I am against you.

Two other sources of prediction that come to light here are dreams and visions. Dreams and visions are sometimes used interchangeably, in which case, a dream is referred to as a vision of the night. The dictionary defines a dream as a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep. Dreams in the scripture play a key part in God speaking to man for direction, guidance, revelation of the future, or prediction of what is to come. Essentially God in the scriptures uses dreams to communicate his will to men. This underscores the importance of dreaming. If you do not dream at all, or always forget your dream, you may be in danger of being deceived, or cheated by the devil due to ignorance of spiritual occurrences around you, and concerning you. This is a situation that needs to be broken or overcome with relevant prayers.

God also provides warning in dreams. He warned Abimelech when he was going to defile Abraham’s wife because Abraham said Sarah was his sister rather than his wife. Genesis 20:3–7 says,

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife. But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

He also warned Laban in a dream not to harm Jacob when Jacob was returning back to Canaan with his family after living with the family of Laban for twenty years. Genesis 31:24 says, And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

He warned Joseph to flee to Egypt because Herod would seek to take the life of Jesus, having known that the Savior had been born. Matthew 2:13 says, And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

When Joseph came back from Egypt, God warned him in a dream not to go to Judea. Matthew 2:22 says, But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.

God also provides direction in dreams. When Paul, during his missionary journey wanted to go to Asia, he was prevented from doing so. However, in a vision of the night, he received direction as to where to go next. Acts 16:9 says, And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

He gave to Jacob the secret of prosperity, which lay in obedience, to divine instruction. Genesis 31:10–13 says,

And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled. And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I. And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap
