About this ebook
But Mark was determined to prove that diagnosis wrong. He overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to reclaim his life, eventually earning two masters degrees and becoming a substance abuse counselor. On this long road to recovery, Mark developed a system for transformational living, which combines spiritual principles with the tools he learned in substance abuse recovery. The result is a step-by-step guide to becoming unstoppable in life.
According to Mark, the trauma we experience in our darkest times can be used as a catalyst to propel each of us out of an ordinary life into an extraordinary life. The tools that he shares in this book can help us all be transformed and renewedable to experience our biggest dreams, our highest purpose, and a life that we love.

ENDORSEMENTS
What do you do when God answers your prayers… in a totally unexpected manor? Simple - You remain obedient. When Mark Dale Miles prayed for God to intervene in his life, he had no idea it would begin only two days later - with a bullet in his head. This remarkable true story is a testament to the fact that God really does work in mysterious ways and when we follow His lead, no matter how unconventional it may seem, we reach heights greater than we could have imagined.

Mark’s story is a story of triumph. He beat all of the odds that the world pronounced against him. He overcame life-threatening, life-altering violence AND self-abuse. His biography is a modern day parable of a prodigal son: he was a young man lost in self-destructive behaviors who found his way back to Spiritual Truth that set him free. His life is a demonstration of Faith fulfilled, of forgiveness assured, of failures turned to successes, of frailties giving way to strength. The ultimate Truth is this: MARK MILES IS UNSTOPPABLE!

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
There are so many people who have helped me on this journey over the years. My life has been blessed beyond measure by the kindness of those around me. Their faith in me—in my ability to overcome and to thrive—has helped me more profoundly than I can express.
I would like to thank Mother Ruby Burruss, my spiritual mother who mentored me as a young man. She prayed for me, even after I had drifted from the church and fell into drugs. Through it all, she continued to see the best for me. She was a great intercessor and guide who showered me with unconditional love and helped me see what I was capable of accomplishing. I am grateful to my family, my brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews for being a part of my growing experience. I have learned many life lessons and those experiences have helped shape me and given me strength to endure and overcome any obstacle.
I like to thank Dean Sterling H. Hudson III from Morehouse College. Dean Hudson opened the Morehouse doors and allowed me to walk through. His courage and belief set the stage for me to change my life. I would like to thank Dr. John H. Stanfield II, Chairman of the Sociology department at Morehouse College. Dr. Stanfield took me under his wings and mentored me through Morehouse and beyond. He has championed me on my journey to sobriety and stayed committed to helping me to succeed with his constant support, assistance and prayer. I would like to thank Dr. Obie Clayton chairman of the Sociology Department at Morehouse College and Director of the Morehouse Research Institute and Mr. Travis Paton my supervisor for supporting me when times were tough. These men believed in me and allowed me the opportunity to work as a research assistant. Likewise, I am indebted to Annette Church Ingram, my Morehouse counselor, who prophesied on my life. She saw my future before I did and told me that I was going to be a minister. She supported me with her conviction and wisdom for many years.
I will forever be grateful to Mr. and Mrs. John Sonny
and Mildred Hollins and their entire family for all that they have done for me especially when I was struggling with the loss of my mother and my addiction. My Morehouse brother James (Chris) Lee and his wife Ann Lee, my friends since high school, for always encouraging me to live the life that I wanted to live. For them, just being true to my own values regardless what other people think was more than enough. Robyn Maitland, who is both my life coach and my voice student, has always encouraged and inspired me to be my best self. Through her eyes I have learned to see myself as successful, fulfilled and living a life that I love. I especially thank her for always reminding me of the genius that’s within me. William Strong my Morehouse brother and friend, who has supported me in all my endeavors from the academic to constructive literary criticism.
Also, I would like to thank Mrs. Woodie Persons, the founder and director of Gate City Heritage School in Atlanta where I worked as the music teacher for 12 years for allowing me to work in a field I love. I would like to thank the late Dr. Wendell P. Whalum Sr., former Chairman of the music department, Dr. Uzee Brown, my voice instructor and Dr. David Morrow, the director of the Morehouse College Glee Club for demonstrating and teaching me the art of excellence in music of which I shall take with me for the rest of my life.
I would like to thank Dr. Aaron Parker, pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta and Morehouse professor, and Dr. Otis Moss III, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Both of these men encouraged me to write this book and tell my personal story in its pages, believing that my story could inspire others. I would like to thank Rev. Stephon Gillard who first saw and understood my call into the ministry. Rev. Gillard was an excellent pastor, mentor and friend during a significant spiritual transition in my life. I would like to thank Doris Ware for supporting me though seminary and while I was an associate minister at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Doris continues to be an excellent support and friend. Dr. Maisha Hazzard and Dr. Alexizena Hazzard have helped me develop the idea for this book, supporting and encouraging me throughout the writing process. Their insightful suggestions took this work to an even higher level than I could have ever imagined on my own. Dr. Eugene Herrington for introducing me to Landmark Education and that introduction continued on to coaching me through two theological seminary schools and for mentoring me all the way through graduation and beyond.
I would like to thank the entire Emory University family for pushing me past my limits and believing in my ability to obtain the Master of Divinity degree especially Dr. Teresa Fry Brown and Dr. Noel Leo Erskine. A special thanks to my cousin, Anthony D. Clinkscales for proofreading the final draft of the manuscript and providing important insights which enhanced the work, but even more for his work as a musician, minister and counselor.
To my editor, Kuwana Haulsey, who helped me bring the story of my life to these pages in such a beautiful and vivid way—thank you! Anita Rehker, Dr. Beckwith’s wonderful editor who assisted us with the foreword, I am humbled by your encouragement and support.
Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith and the entire Agape International Spiritual Center and New Thought community in Los Angeles CA. Studying with Dr. Beckwith opened me up to a richer understanding of God and stretched me in ways that allowed me to see God in places that I hadn’t been able to see Him before. I thank Dean Lawrence E. Carter, Sr. from Morehouse for sending me to Dr. Beckwith, where I was blessed to encounter teachings that changed my life.
The love and joy that you have all brought into my life has enriched it beyond measure. God bless you all!
FOREWORD
The journey of Mark Dale Miles is one of the most courageous and triumphant testaments of trust in one’s True Self that I’ve encountered in my 30 years of being in the ministry and counseling thousands of individuals. The trait connecting each step of his victory is his invincible commitment to walk the path of the spiritual warrior. The degree of challenge one faces in doing so is exceedingly high, so when saying that Mark is a qualified guide for all those who read this book, I do not do so lightly.
On the pages of Alive and Unstoppable unfolds the story of a harrowing childhood, one absent of positive role models, one filled with tormenting physical and verbal abuse from his father, with gang-involved youth, drug and alcohol addiction, racial profiling and prejudice, and a level of violence most of us encounter only through broadcast news or movies seen from the safety of our living room couch. Mark’s inner and outer work with these life circumstances is a reminder of the inherent Wholeness that flows as naturally as blood through each and every one of us.
In a spirit of honest, raw self-disclosure, Mark holds back nothing of his own dark nights of the soul, proving that
