David Kuhnert
The author of this book, David Kuhnert, grew up in Northern Wisconsin on a small farm. Shortly after graduating high school in 1988, he joined the army and got married to his wonderful wife, Beth. He went to infantry one station unit training in August of 1988. His first duty assignment was in Fort Ord, California, with the Seventh Infantry Division. During his four years at Fort Ord, he was deployed to Operation Just Cause in Panama and also deployed to Honduras for five months as part of Joint Task Force Bravo. While stationed in California from 1988–1992, Dave and Beth welcomed their first two girls, Elizabeth and Katherine, into the family. His next duty assignment was the Sixth Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. During this three-year period from 1993–1995, he earned the rank of staff sergeant and welcomed his daughter Amanda and son Joseph to the family. The Kuhnerts would spend the next four years from 1996–1999 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in the Eighty-Second Airborne Division. While stationed at Fort Bragg, Dave was deployed to Egypt for seven months. During this tour, he was able to tour parts of Egypt and the Holy Land. After redeploying to Fort Bragg, Dave earned the rank of sergeant first class and the army sent him off to US Army Drill Sergeant School. Dave graduated from US Army Drill Sergeant School at the top of his class and served as a drill sergeant for two years (2000–2001) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. The plan for the family was to go back to Alaska for the next duty assignment. However, September 11 of 2001 changed the plan. Dave felt the need to go back to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to be in one of the most eligible units to deploy. After returning to Fort Bragg and the Eighty-Second Airborne Division in 2001, Dave’s unit was deployed to Afghanistan. The unit made an impact in several parts of the country from Kandahar to Khost. The unit returned to the States for six months where Dave was promoted to first sergeant. The unit was next sent to Fallujah, Iraq, for ten months. Upon returning to the states for six months, the unit again received orders to go back to Iraq. Needing a break, Dave volunteered for ROTC duty at Michigan Tech University in 2006. After moving to Michigan and working with cadets for a year, the army promoted him to sergeant major and sent him to the Air Force Senior NCO Academy where he graduated at the top of his class. The air force’s academy is a shorter course than the army’s academy. This shorter course allowed the army to then send him back to Afghanistan for a year as a combat advisor. The combat advisor team he joined came together for training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and then deployed for a year to Kabul, Afghanistan. Dave worked first with the Afghan Army and later the police and high-level government officials. After redeploying, Dave was assigned to Fort Riley, Kansas, as a command sergeant major in 2008. After three years as a battalion command sergeant major, Dave retired from the army. He retired in June of 2011 after twenty-three years of service. He moved to Texas to work in the oil field in July of 2011. He was hired by CrownQuest Operating where he serves as the production manager for an oil- and gas-operating company. He is also the manager for the CrownQuest leadership development team who coordinates and teaches all of the internal leadership training for the company. They also do leader training for the community and faith-based organizations across the country. Dave’s military awards include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (second award), the Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Drill Sergeant Badge, the Bronze Star Medal (fourth award), the Meritorious Service Medal (fourth award), and numerous other awards and decorations. His military and civilian schooling include Ranger School, Drill Sergeant School, the Sergeants Major Academy, Airborne School, Jumpmaster School, Air Assault School, an MBA in business management with a human resource focus, and numerous other.
