To my family for their constant love and support,
To my instructors and mentors for their guidance,
To Kasia, Gaby, Steve, Caroline, and Trisha for their honesty,
To Casimir for his friendship and appreciation,
And to Phil for giving me this premise as a homework assignment.

Chapter 1
I sit here in my office looking at the paper I just wrote. I want to keep a memoir of my experiences for the future.
I take a deep breath and reread the paper. Shit, it’s barely been a year since that date. Everything has changed. 1 year ago I was sitting in this chair talking to James about homework; now I’m sitting here thinking about all that happened in the past. These memories don’t feel like yesterday, more like years ago.
I need to remember,
I say to myself. I turn and look out the window. God, has it all changed.
It was 7:27 on a cool April morning. I was in Mr. Patterson’s classroom while James was copying my homework.
You got #18 wrong,
he said flipping to the next page of my copybook.
Well, you can do it yourself next time,
I said while unfolding my legs. It was a few months until graduation and he still copied homework. Mr. Patterson’s room was 1 of the lab rooms in the science department. At the head of the room with the white board there was a 4ft tall, 4ft wide, and 5ft long lab table that Mr. Patterson mainly used to hold his notes while he wrote on the board. In the corner were his desks. After the main lab table were 8 4ft tall, 3ft long, and 20ft wide lab tables that went all the way to the back of the room. The wall behind his desk was all windows.
Peter and Dawn, the couple of our group, walked into the classroom holding hands.
Hey, Pat,
Dawn said.
Morning, Dawn,
Mr. Patterson mumbled.
Hey, James, you going to the game today?
Peter asked
I can’t,
James said, my dad has me working at his store today.
The 2 of them had been in love since we all were in 6th grade. I was very happy for them.
Have a good day, everyone,
Dawn said waving goodbye. They left the room still holding hands.
What class is that for?
Mr. Patterson asked James.
Yours,
James said. He wasn’t the brightest bulb in the bunch. Mr. Patterson rolled his eyes and went back to his computer work. Cassie walked into the classroom looking like she hadn’t gotten any sleep the previous night.
You okay, Cas?
Mr. Patterson asked.
I’m fine, Pat,
Cassie assured him.
Mr. Patterson was more of a friend to all of us then a teacher. He didn’t like us calling him Carl (his first name) but he didn’t mind Mr. Pat or Pat.
You look like a zombie,
James laughed when he took a look at Cassie. She gave him the middle finger and turned to me.
I need your help,
she said to me.
Why? What’s wrong?
I asked.
Amy thinks she has discovered time travel. I need help calming her down, she’s gone crazy.
Time travel? At 7:30 in the morning? I need to see this,
Mr. Patterson said as he stood up with his coffee.
You comin’, James?
I asked in the doorway.
Naw, I’ve got Pat first period and I need this done,
James answered.
You know I’m not giving you any credit knowing you copied the homework, right?
Pat said sticking his head in. James sighed and came with us.
We entered the science lab on the first floor and saw empty cups of coffee on several lab tables. We heard heavy breathing from the corner of the room. I approached the source and saw Amy on the floor rocking back and forth with her back to us.
Amy? Are you okay?
I asked when the heavy breathing turned to murmuring.
Okay?
she said in a creepy voice standing while turning. We could then see what she was holding. It was a hoop the size of a basketball and attached to a stand that has a small screen and several buttons. Okay? I’M FANTASTIC! I’M GETTING AN A+,
she said.
What is it?
I asked when she let me hold it.
A time machine!
she exclaimed. She ran to several tables lifting coffee cups to her lips to see if there was any coffee left in them. After checking all of them, she took Pat’s coffee and chugged it. It needs more sugar,
she said handing him back his empty mug.
I don’t think you need any more,
Pat said.
Here, I’ll show you I’m not crazy!
she said. She grabbed 1 of my hands and pulled me outside. Pat, Cassie, and James followed closely behind us.
Once outside, she started pressing buttons on the small machine. Ready?
she asked. She then held the machine upside down and swung it around the ground. As she did, snow started to come out 1 side of the hoop. After a few swirls, she lifted it back up and turned the machine off.
Where did that come from?
I asked after I fully comprehended what I had just seen.
The better question would be when,
Amy said. It’s from December 3rd, the day after that snow storm.
I am out of words,
Mr. Patterson said. Who do you have for this class?
he asked holding the snow in his hand.
I have you, Pat,
she chuckled. James was completely awed. We all knew she was smart and crazy, but we didn’t know how much of a happy medium they made. We should start going inside, it’s very warm out here,
I said taking off my cardigan.
We didn’t know till Pat turned the news on what had happened to make that cool April morning warmer.
Pat turned on the TV and switched the channel to his favorite News channel 3. The anchor lady started talking about box office rating when the lady was cut off and the main anchor man appeared. He looked very worried and sweaty.
"This just in, we have breaking news! Russia just launched 5 nuclear strikes on several different countries. In the U.S., thousands are reported dead in Arkansas
