Kirti’S Future

Kirti lives with her family in West Bengal, India. They are sharecropper farmers who grow crops and have to share their produce and income with the landowner. It is a hard life. Kirti is the oldest child at eleven years old and works the fields with her family. She has had only a little schooling because it is not necessary in their culture for growing food. Kirti has begun to think about her future and does not want to be a farmers wife like her mom. She has had a glimpse of the city and believes it is possible for a different life away from farming. Kirti sits on a rock away from her house and talks to her goat and to whatever god may be out there to hear her as she asks for help to change her life. Would her father even let her go?

Mrs. Juanita Muirhead Graham is the wife of Cedric Graham and mother of two sons, Rickey James Muirhead and Christopher Richard Muirhead. Mrs. Graham has always been a woman of great passion, especially for children. She is the visionary and executive director of Alabama STEM Education, where she actively makes science, technology, engineering, and math accessible to underrepresented, underserved middle and high school students. As a former manager of the US postal service for over fifteen years, she utilizes her skills from there to bring families, together with students, to learn more about STEM education. She is known in the community as The Got Lady! Her willingness to help anyone that asks makes her a household name throughout many of the local neighborhoods. Her faith in God and the drive to never give up has placed her in collaboration with many local universities such as UAB, UA, University of Montevallo, and Alabama A&M to help bridge the gap on STEM training for these students. Mrs. Graham is an active member of New Life Interfaith Ministry, where she says her desire to do things with excellence and order are the words of her pastor and mentor. It is through her pastor that she has learned that children are very dear to God and deserve the proper leadership with much love. Mrs. Graham could best be described through the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world!”
