About this ebook

It is possible most people are so comfortable that they do not appreciate the horrors of poverty and those unfortunate enough to be caught in its tentacles. Our senses seemed to have been dulled by the relative luxury we see around us that we are not aware of the circle of poverty that exist. This simple book opens our minds to the issues of poverty and what each individual can do to overcome it.

    Introduction

T his book is a about poverty and it’s attending woes. The book reveals some of the causes of poverty and why it still persists. It tells us how tragically, most people have become so used and addicted to poverty so much so that it has been accepted as a way of life. The book throws light on wrong teachings and beliefs which has resulted in people being misled about the real issues concerning pov erty.

Most importantly, this book offers us an insight into simple truths and things one can do to overcome poverty. The writer encourages the reader not just to hate poverty but to go all out to fight it. To the reader, the message is simple: Poverty is evil; fight it.

    Foreword

P overty is a dreaded disease many abhor. Strangely, it is tolerated and accepted by most people as part and parcel of society; no thanks to some people who teach that there is nothing anybody can do about it. Infact some teach that it is the will and plan of God that some should be poor and mendicant and trying to better one’s life is against the will of God. It is this mentality that has made the ignorant to resign themselves to poverty and it’s attendant suffe ring.

One only has to look around the enviroment to see the devastating effects of poverty. When we talk of poverty, we are not talking of somebody who is short of money and so cannot afford something at a particular time but will come some other time to pick the item. We are not talking of somebody who can afford the basic needs of life like good meals, descent house or clothing and things like that but maybe is not a landlord or a car owner. This is not poverty.

We are not talking of people who skips vaccation once a while. We are talking of a situation where somebody has been reduced to a state where one is only existing and not living. It is a state where somebody is litterally picking left over food from dust bins and refuse heaps. It is a state where like the prodigal son, one desires the food given to animals so he will not die of hunger.(Lk.15:16) This is the stage where a human being has lost all sense of dignity and living without a shred of hope for anything good.

The fall out from poverty is evil. It is the aim of this book to change the false ideas about poverty so they can be properly addressed. If people have the right information, changes their mind set and act on the information, there is the possibility their lives can be changed for the better.

    A Question That Needs Answers

W hat is poverty? This is a question which many people spread across all continents can easily answer without refering to any dictionary. It’s effects can only be described by those unfortunate enough to feel it’s deadly pangs. To start with, poverty simply defined, means a state of deprivation, not able to meet one’s need and wants. It is a situation where an individual or family cannot fend for themselves and lack the basic necessities of life to live normal lives. It is a state where somebody always has to beg before he can eat. The definition could go on and on. So why must people resign themselves to such humiliating situation when they can do something abou t it?

Poverty certainly has been with humanity a long time. Unfortunately, one reason why it has taken a foothold in our daily lives is because some deluded people keep telling whoever wants
