This book, Seven Shades of Gay
, is
dedicated to my husband who was gay and died of aides in 1938 at the age of 54. He went to Alaska for an experimental aides cure where the doctors injected Ozone into his blood stream. He died immediately of a massive heart attack at the end of this treatment. His body had to be cremated in order to cross state lines back to Texas where he had lived. After a memorial service, his remains were scattered both in Texas and California.
We are as different as the Seven Shades of Gay, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet or the colors that make up a ray of White Light. These are the colors of the rainbow that appear in the sky when it rains and the sun bends the white light into its seven shades of beautiful color. As humans, we have different genders and sexual orientations. We are the seven shades of gay. Our secret color code is green because it is half way between the other colors of the rainbow.
I will begin when I first noticed that I was different from my other playmates at school and in the playground. I was a girl, but I liked to play all the games with the boys. I was the fastest runner in the first grade, and I could hit a solid homerun in baseball. My favorite place was my tree house that my parents had built me. It was made of wood with a trap door and two windows. I could pull up the knotted rope to enter and exit any time I wanted. I like to invite my friend to join me. We would read comic books about Superman and a younger Super boy and Batman and a younger Robin. They were obviously very closely bonded and wearing tights which made them look gay. We had a long electric cord that allowed us to listen to the radio. My favorite programs were the Lone Ranger and his Indian friend, Tonto. Also Shadow, who was a mysterious loner. I can still remember the Lone Ranger and his Indian friend riding off into the distance calling, Hi Ho Silver and Away
. Who knows what they did out when they were in the mountains scoping out their next adventure. The voice of the Shadow was more intriguing with, Only the Shadow Knows.
So, I assumed that the Shadow was the only one not in denial about his other comic book friends’ orientation. Of course, there was also Flash Gordon and the Green Lateran who ran around in green tights. I traded comic books with my friends all the time. We kept them in cardboard boxes under out beds, and they were treasured possessions. All my role models were men, even the superheroes were male oriented like Wonder Woman, who flew around in an invisible plane and lassoed people with a golden lasso. This looked a little like bondage to me especially since she wore two bullet proof bracelets. I wonder what it would look like if all the super heroes got together for a sex party. Of course, they also included Hop-Along Cassidy and Lash La
