Jasper and the Shroud of Death - Robert A. Hunt

    Prologue

JASPER’S DEATH did little to stop the war. After five years it wasn’t completely clear what all the fighting was for. Was it climate change, terrorism or a war over crude oil?

With such political unrest, fear ran rampant through the people of the world.

Desperately, people needed something to believe in. They needed something that could give them a little sense of stability so the planet of Earth could begin to heal and grow.

Bombs fell and missiles rocketed through the air. The sound of people screaming was drowned out by the deafening explosions. Blasts shook people to their core. Above the battleground of tanks and foot soldiers, military jet fighters thundered by with strife.

The pilots of these metal warbirds had no idea of the other battle they were racing through; a secret battle; a spiritual battle. If someone had the eyes to see, as Jasper had, they’d notice, following the jets were winged angels. These protective entities worked desperately to save people. They did this by redirecting bullets and missiles, but their efforts were often thwarted by the demons who worked against them.

Bursts of artillery detonations pounded at the ground, destroying much in the way of military equipment and public property. Many of these Earth-shaking explosions were so violent and powerful they affected the spiritual realm. Giant demon lava fists coincided with these eruptions and jutted out of the ground. These were seen as explosions, but in times of war, they were in fact much more. Such visions were only visible spiritually nevertheless, plumes of poisonous smoke opened a channel for the Reapers of Death to spill out and charge over the land.

Satan and his demons cheered for war, death and destruction. They reveled and partied in the violence, feeding off the fear and sense of despondency. The greater the push for war, the more the Devil and his minions excitedly assisted the carnage like a fan fuels a fire. Soldiers on both sides felt evil stood waiting for them at every corner of their lives.

Soldiers let themselves become driven by powerful spirits of hate. When a soldier missed a shot on purpose or refused to shoot at all, it was seen as cowardice, but God knew it took more discipline and courage to disobey a military order. A soldier who turned his back on his orders to listen to the voice of an angel would have dire consequences to face if he or she lived long enough to return. Sometimes, to choose the right thing wasn’t clear, but when you did the right thing, you knew it in your heart and it was clear.

Many military reports across the globe were not authentic and had to be rewritten. The truths on the battlefields were altered for official recordkeeping.

During the initial Air Scrubber War, Brazilian forces re-entered Africa. This was a key strategic position in Libya that South America had failed to retake from the Nigerian forces who controlled it, just two days earlier. This time, the Brazilian troops quickly captured the government buildings that were being used as the Nigerian force’s base of operations and that was the end of the fighting, or so they thought…

After a few quiet hours, a fierce counter-attack ensued. Brazilian troops laid down a devastating concentration of fire. Although they managed to hold off the Nigerians, the frontline began to run low on provisions.

Additionally, they suffered countless injuries including Platoon Commander Rafael Santos who was shot in the head. They needed to retreat, but they were determined to leave no soldier behind for torture and mutilation. They decided that the wounded who couldn’t make it out, would huddle in a room rigged with explosives.

The room was detonated when the Nigerian forces reached the Government House.

In the meantime, the enemy forces suffered numerous casualties and ran out of Ammo. Their surrender was near, but the Brazilian Forces in the Government House had no way of knowing this. The Brazilian soldiers were on their way out the door, when suddenly the words DO NOT SURRENDER!! echoed from a radio that was thought to be broken. The Nigerians retreated. The Brazilians stayed and reinforcements arrived to treat the wounded. Rafael, the platoon commander, survived what should’ve been a fatal bullet wound to the head and was back in action, half an hour later! All who survived to tell this tale believed angels were present in this situation for it was nothing short of miraculous.

During the Independent Air Treaty War, Russia’s platoon of the five O’ first, fought South Korea. The South Koreans proved to be relentless soldiers destroying large swaths of Russian cities to root out the civilians and they pulled it off efficiently. No one saw it coming.

In one instance, the Russian platoon, led by Sargent Viktor Petrov found themselves surrounded by hundreds. The Russian soldiers were down to their last twenty five bullets. With a sad end seemingly near, the men agreed to go out with a bang and readied themselves to make good use of every last bullet. When the small platoon was about to accept the inevitable, something incredible happened. The Korean soldiers dropped their weapons and began running away, Colonial Sosuke Fujita screamed 神の力! Several years later, Sargent Viktor Petrov came across Colonial Sosuke Fujita at a summit meeting. The two men spoke and Viktor received an unlikely answer as to what had actually occurred on that miraculous day. According to Sosuke, his entire army witnessed a vision of a giant angelic warrior defending the Russian Platoon in the ashen hemisphere above. The Korean forces had no choice but to drop their weapons and flee for their lives.

The word Colonial Sosuke shouted was, The power of God!

In Denmark, with no artillery, about seventy Danish soldiers had virtually no chance of blocking a Chinese advance, but they wouldn’t go down without a fight.

The Chinese were able to defeat the Danish resistance by using military strategies provided by tactical methods of cunning and strategic demons.

When the tanks approached the city of Arhus, the minimal Danish forces were told by angels to throw bottles of Absinthe flaming cocktails (These were supposed to be their victory drinks.) and behold, a Danish soldier managed a direct hit on the first approaching Chinese tank. The liquor ignited with brilliant blue blaze of fire.

The Chinese artillery stopped and the soldiers within the tanks appeared to panic.

Throwing their entire stock of liquor bottles at the other tanks one by one, the Danish soldiers looked on as more of their blue flames lit up the tanks.

Unexpectedly, the entire Chinese column turned around and fled. They believed the Danish, known to be quite clever, had developed a new and unidentifiable anti-tank weapon. When the Chinese hit the Atlantic Ocean, the depleted Danish Forces were incredibly low on weapons, but they quickly assembled two ancient French cannons. Using them well, they fired upon the Chinese with 75 mm cannons, and 81 mm mortars. The use of the Dane’s little artillery miraculously took the Chinese by surprise. Why else would they retreat when they had Denmark outgunned and outnumbered?

On March 5th, an eerie silence befell the city when the British firing stopped. It was too quiet. German troops were dispatched to check for a trap. The city was empty, save for all the equipment that the British (Jordanian) army left behind. German forces entered the streets of East Berlin and eventually took their city back without firing a single shot.

What happened was an army of angels stood on the frontlines between the two warring sides: the British and the Germans. Over six days as the battle raged on, many soldiers and officers from both sides reported seeing these angels dressed in shining holy armor. They appeared mostly during the fiercest moments of the battle. Sometimes they floated between the two armies and stretched out their hands toward the men.

One lieutenant reported that he heard angelic voices calling out to him. When he listened to the voice, it bestowed valuable information unto him. He was told where the British troops were positioned. This helped to drive the British army out of Germany during the Climate National Activist Wars.

Though the Germans gained confidence during the war because an invisible army of angels protected their property, the British also encountered moments when the angels acted in their favor too.

British General Oliver Herrington told his military aides that a female angel had visited him and presented a dramatic vision of the world’s future. The angel commanded him to Watch and remember. While he watched the vision, she showed him of future wars between the nations. There would be hardships and victories as a result but a glimpse into Heaven would cause everyone to pause for just a moment. As the vision concluded, the angel declared: Let every man, woman and child learn to live together and share their peace equally with respect for their God and the gift of his land.

General Herrington told the world, Divine beings sometimes help humans fight for righteousness. This was one of the things an angel taught him.

A spiritually empowered army of Australians were driven out of Brittan, but a captured rebel told General Herrington, "My soldiers saw an angelic army appear whenever we approached your boarders; hundreds of angels stood guard to protect you."

Whenever a person died on the battlefield, an angel swooped in to direct the poor soul to paradise. By dying in a world of war, the soldiers were reborn to the world of heaven. Like waking from a nightmare, they could breathe easy and finally enjoy a world of peace. The company of enemies quickly became a company of dear friends and family when they found themselves in their new home in the clouds.

    Chapter 1

    HEAVEN:

WITH EYES BEAMING with the light of the Lord, Jasper made use of the Lord’s gift of insight. Following the path of tranquility, it led Jasper to one of the Lord’s glorious gardens. The inviting archway lured him in. It was engraved with the designation, ‘The Garden of Unconditional Love.’ Jasper found it was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen. Floating through the lush vegetation, he was pleased to meet people who had the most inviting eyes and enlightened smiles. There was something rather peculiar about the garden also; not wrong, just too natural to be natural. The best way he could explain it was, even if the garden was in terrible condition, and it certainly was not, the spirit of that place would still cause him to experience it as the most beautiful place he’d ever encountered.

The water of the streams even glorified God, as did all of the plants, trees, animals and even the rocks. Everyone knew not to remove anything from the garden and this rule was naturally obeyed. Angel Warriors meandered through also but their manifestation didn’t come with a sense of valiant courage or gallant statures of heroics and fearless, noble authority but of peace and intrepid good will. The strings of harps snapped and strummed as the angels sang and hummed. After they passed by and at a distance, the angel’s epic demeanor left Jasper feeling encouraged and brave.

At the center of the vast garden, Jasper found the source of the vicinity’s unique spirit in the form of a magnificent tree; ‘The Tree of Life.’ Many souls gathered at the tree. Just being near it fed the spirit with an impression aimed at the potential for knowledge and wisdom. From a selection of any of the twelve fruits that grew, one would find themselves more than satisfied. This was just one of many gardens in this replica of the ‘The Garden of Eden.’ There were many replicas of important places and buildings throughout Heaven. There were old churches and homes, Kingdoms and mansions; all of which were destroyed on Earth by fire, war or old age. These things can’t last forever on Earth but they are able to be remade in perfect detail, here in Heaven. ‘The greatest treasures are the families and friends who surround us.’ Jasper reflected.

A heartbeat later, with renewed vigor, making his way alongside a river and through the crowd, Jasper half expected to see Adam and Eve come strolling by. It wasn’t uncommon to see the couple in the garden. They came to visit the tree often. Each time they did so, spirits of all sorts, including the animals, would come out to greet them.

Teaching under the tree, Jasper found the Apostle Paul. With uncanny clarity of mind, he quoted from Galatians 2:20. All grew quiet in anticipation as Paul recited; I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Jasper sat and listened to Paul speak when to his surprise, Jesus walked around from behind the wide tree trunk. Picking of the tree, he placed the fruit into his satchel which was strapped across to his opposite shoulder. Approaching the spirits who assembled there in great number, Jesus began handing out one piece of fruit at a time. In the midst of so many, Jesus took the time to greet each one and say something personal that they each needed to hear.

Jasper felt the Lord wouldn’t be able to get to him so he was about to turn away.

Then the Lord called him by name, Jasper.

Pausing in place, Jasper slowly turned.

Jesus wore plain clothes, like the ones Jasper recalled he wore when he walked on Earth, unlike the bright robe Jasper expected. The son of God seemed more like a pal than the Lord of Creation. ‘How was he so approachable?’ Jesus never ceased to amaze Jasper, but he understood why God the Father loved His Son so.

Jesus overflowed with grace, truth and of course, love. Holding out a piece of fruit, offering it to Jasper, the Christ of the ages smiled.

Jasper bowed and received it. Mesmerized by the plump golden-red product of the great Tree of Life, Jasper remained awe struck.

Jesus once again called to Jasper.

This rattled Jasper so he was alert and looking up at the Lord’s captivating eyes.

Then Jesus gently spoke, In the name of My great love for you, eat.

Hearing so many others bite into their portion, breaking the skin and crunching into the crisp, juicy fibers within, Jasper could only imagine what experience to expect for even a small taste. Seeing other spirits, both human and angelic, roll their eyes back and begin to express shameless emotions, Jasper could hold back no longer. He too took a bite. At first it was like a golden honey flavor that lit up his mouth, but as he chewed, his emotions also began to stir with an unmeasurable amount of love at the center. But when he swallowed and really took it in, it felt like peace and love exploded throughout his being; a total spiritual recharge.

Jasper had to relax before taking a second bite. It too was just as potent as the first; better than anything he’d ever tasted before, but somehow also familiar. Jasper was reminded of all of the greatest memories of his past; sunsets, kissing his first love, spending a simple day alone with his dog, clean air and spending a day without a care in the world.

Jasper’s tranquil thoughts were broken when the soothing voice of the Christ spoke to everyone, saying, Brothers and sisters, My fruit is My boundless love for you. Partake in My fruit as often as you wish, for My eternal love has no end. Just as My fruit is within you, so too the Father of Heaven is within you.

Jasper couldn’t imagine a moment that could be any better; then the Heavenly choir added to the experience and he was overwhelmed once more. ‘Was it true? Did I once believe that Heaven would be boring? Truly, this thought has crossed everyone’s mind at some point. Oh, the arrogance of not knowing, then again, who could be expected to comprehend such wonder?’

Next, Jasper found himself filled with an insatiable desire to worship the Christ, for He was worthy of praise. From his deep need to praise Him and express his deepest adoration for Him, Jasper hardly noticed that everyone else with him became subject to the exact same need as his own. Everyone opened their mouths and spontaneous worship erupted all at once.

Joined brother to brother, sister to sister in perfect unity, glorious worship arose louder and louder in such a language, so profound, it couldn’t be articulated on Earth.

The effect such intense worship had on the Lord, was a sight indeed. Light, as pure as his great love, emanated from God. The intensity of the colours and brilliance was like nothing Jasper had ever experienced with his natural eyes. When it seemed the power of God had reached an apex, it grew even more intense. God’s glory built greater and greater enveloping every spirit and every soul within the Lord’s intense warmth, light and love. The spirit of Heaven was nothing like the personal experience of the Lord.

After experiencing the powerful glory of God, Jasper felt he couldn’t live without it. Then the voice of the Christ touched Jasper’s thoughts, ‘You haven’t even begun to fathom the power of My word.’

The Apostle Paul approached Jasper, Perhaps I can help you in the taking of your first step. When Paul reached out his hand and touched Jasper’s arm, the two of them were immediately teleported to a small gate at the southern wall of Heaven.

The first thing Jasper noticed was how large the radiant plants were. Here in Heaven, there’s a greater variety of birds, animals, insects, reptiles and fish than on Earth. Jasper told Paul. The rising orchestra of chipper bird songs amongst the rasping circular calls of the insects made it challenging for them to hear one another.

Paul answered Jasper, That’s because Heaven is closer to the source of life. After death, Heaven is prepared to preserve all life. Not all life from Earth is preserved here, but Heaven was no less prepared to preserve everything ever created. They each reached out their hands and the branches bent away to clear their path for them. Forgive me, Jasper. This is a small gate and this path is the least travelled. That’s why the trail is so overgrown and unused.

A soul passed through the gate and many angels cheered. Even Jasper and Paul couldn’t contain their happiness.

Craning his neck to see further into the smaller gate, Jasper saw the image of another person; a young man.

Paul began to share from his own experience with Jasper, "What looks to be good on Earth can become very different here. For instance, what make a man a king on Earth will be an obstacle from being a king here."

The expression on the face of the new comer said it all. Looking at Heaven for the first time or the millionth time, the expression of awe is always the same.

When Paul noticed Jasper looking at the new young man, he added, In any journey, the first step is the most important and it’s usually the most difficult. If you don’t start with Salvation, then there’s no staircase to Heaven for you to climb.

It’s a whole new beginning. Jasper told Paul as he recalled the first time he entered the marvelous world of Heaven, "This is the beginning of his eternity. When people sadly leave their loving family of Earth, they’re welcomed here by a larger, richer history of family who passed before them. Nodding toward the boy Jasper said, His life has flashed before his eyes, then his memories dissolved in the rain and a strange impression crossed his mind. ‘What was my life for anyway? I was born, I lived and I died.’ An instant later came the moment of truth. His body was laid to rest. His spiritual eyes were opened. Then he became alert to far more than he ever knew in the flesh... Life did continue… Then Jasper began to connect to a deeper place within himself. A person has many struggles in life and realizes he’s always trying to find a little piece of Heaven to enjoy; money, amusement parks, extreme sports. You get the idea…"

Quite true, Jasper. Paul said, After this boy gave up his life in a terrible accident, he experienced his consciousness as he left his body. Listen now as he speaks to God.

Stop with all of this mystery about who believes and who doesn’t believe. Aren’t we worth more than to be treated like toys and played with? Show Heaven to the living. It can only change the world for the better. Do you know how bad it is on Earth? Do you even care? Everyone should get one trip to Heaven before they die. This will change the world.

Jasper agreed with the young man, though he didn’t like the attitude he was taking up with his creator. Some time ago, Jasper was given a second chance and all he had was a glimpse of Heaven through only a small window. That young man must be a genius. Jasper told Paul.

Paul continued, "Some people go to Heaven and see loved ones whom they thought wouldn’t get into heaven. Inside of us all we’ve chosen a side; good or evil, heaven or hell, God or the Devil. Most people just need that little hint to know God is real. Seeing heaven does that. For those who never saw heaven, mercy and goodness are shown. God wants his people in Heaven with him because he loves them. All of the relationships that you have on Earth are continued here, and they’re all purified by the judgement."

Why did God spare me when I was about to be judged? Jasper asked.

He saw something in you that you didn’t see in yourself. Paul answered. God sees the best in everyone.

At those words, Jasper recognized the next person to come through the narrow gate. ‘Could it be?’ Jasper wondered. It was a person he once knew on Earth, Ned! I could hardly recognize you?! Jasper called out.

He quickly turned to the Apostle Paul, That’s my old friend from Earth. It’s Ned! Perhaps I should have a moment alone with him.

That is perfectly understandable, Jasper. I’ll catch up with you later. With a gracious smile, Paul disappeared in a flash of brilliant light.

Jasper looked back Ned’s way. His friend had heard him calling his name and was waving.

Jasper didn’t remember Ned ever to be a poster boy for faithful believers. He didn’t think he’d ever see his friend again and not in Heaven of all places. ‘Ned hated the idea of church and God… Didn’t he?’ Jasper always looked at Ned as his equal, well before he met the angels, that is.

From what Jasper knew of his old friend he couldn’t help but wonder. ‘How did he make it in through the gate least travelled?’ As Ned drew near, Jasper came up with even more questions. He didn’t think Ned was ever the easiest on the eyes, but in Heaven, he was more pleasing to look at than anyone he’d seen on Earth. Who he was on the inside was shining through now.

Face to face, Jasper said, Ned, it’s really you?! his spirit brightened.

Yes, it is, though I have to tell you, I’m really not surprised to find you here. Ned answered.

Jasper’s bright eyes of light examined his old friend. He was gleaming with joy to be reunited with him.

You must be surprised to see me. Apparently only my body was fat, not my spirit. I can tell by the look in your eyes, Jasper, you wann’a know how I died.

Jasper gave him a slight nod.

Well, you see, the struggles you faced in your life directly affected me, though from a distance. Your accident on the roof of that church, well it was my accident too. I too had to live with it. That day on the road, when I touched you and saw countless angels descending from Heaven, I-I no longer questioned if God was real anymore. You know I once had dreary idea that people wasted their time going to church. But all that changed for me in an instant. I began to attend the very same little Church you fell from. I became good friends with the head Pastor; Pastor Jay Renolds. I gave my heart to Jesus and became a Christian. I also met many of the people who followed you. Ned’s level of confidence had bloomed since Jasper saw him last.

Well, they didn’t follow me. We followed the angels. Seven angels led us on that adventure. Jasper corrected his friend.

"I saw an angel up close for the first time just moments ago. I had been hired to work for the city of Princeton. We were called to do all sorts of jobs to maintain that little town. This time, however, I was asked to hold the stop sign as a traffic controller. The man I was working with was a professional. He had to go into a man-hole to inspect a gas leak. After sometime, I became concerned for him because he wasn’t coming back out. I went to the open hole and called to him but he wouldn’t answer. I flashed a flashlight into the darkness and found him a few steps from the ladder laying down. I went in to help him, but when I entered the man-hole, I found there was more gas than oxygen. I blacked out instantly.

The experience was actually quite relaxing. I felt so comfortable, like I was sleeping in a warm bed of fluffy comforters. That was when I knew it was time for me to die from living. Though it was lonely and dark and my body was laying in the muck with that other fellow who died, eventually a beautiful angel of light approached me and said, I am here to accompany you to the Gates of Heaven. I should tell you, your life has not ended, it has just begun."

"It’s true, Ned. Your life has just begun. Look around you." Jasper told him.

Ned turned slowly and looked into the eyes of every face that surrounded him. The eyes of the people were like-wise gazing back at him.

Jasper told his friend. These are your family. Most of whom you haven’t met yet because their time on Earth was many generations before your time. They know your story. They’ve been watching over you… You have a lot of catching up to do. Swinging his arm open wide, Jasper presented Ned’s elders to him.

Yes, Jasper and thank you. Ned left Jasper to introduce himself and visit his kin for the first time. He would soon discover that, in Heaven, he had inherited a family who were waiting for him and it was a much larger family than he could’ve ever imagined.

    Chapter 2

FLOATING PAST THE TWELVE great pools below the throne of God, Jasper happened to find one of his friends soaking in the water there. Torrents of water bellowed up, then overflowed and cascaded down the sides of the stony slopes.

When the angel, West noticed Jasper, he called out, Hey, Jasper! Come, relax with us in these refreshing, living waters! You’ll feel rejuvenated! The pools were in a stir like there was an undercurrent. ‘Was it the way it was heated?’ The thick steam was surely an indication of the temperature.

For a moment Jasper was going to just smile and pass by. He was satisfied simply to observe the wondrous sights of Heaven. With nothing particular to do and no pressing itinerary, Jasper answered. Sure, West. Why not. I haven’t tried this before. There was no need to undress. Other than the armor of God, Jasper wore the light of God’s love and the nakedness of flesh didn’t exist here.

Slipping under the water’s surface, Jasper asked, Hey, West, how are you? he winced at the soothing heat, but only as a reflex to the sting he would expect had he still been composed of flesh.

I’m fine, of course. We’re in Heaven. Your question is better suited for the humans of Earth. West laughed.

Concerned, Jasper leaned closer to his friend. Whispering softly, Jasper said, Since you came back from hell, I mean. Do you think you’ll ever be the same again?

As you know, after my struggle and turmoil, I finally escaped. I took to winged flight and all were surprised when my splendor returned, greater than before. West answered joyously, A curious thing about Heaven; it has a way of removing the weight out of any problem. I’ve just recently returned from the dream nebula, its swirling gases mirror the thoughts of those passing through. It is indeed a wonderful place for angels. There, our minds became purged of all dark thoughts. This means, to enter the dream nebula one requires a strong and disciplined mind. Memories can influence our thoughts but we’re in control. You and I choose to be happy just as we can choose to be sad. I’ve toiled with my memories of hell where my own thoughts are concerned but I’ve made vast progress. I’ve taken a grand tour of the universe; journeyed to many distant and fantastic stars. Now, glory be, I’m home. Will I ever be the same you ask? No, for all of my difficulties, I am better than I ever thought I could be.

    Jasper smiled at his friend.

Placing his hand to his head, West received a message in his mind. Please excuse me, Wilson calls to me. I must go to him at once. West rose up out of the living waters and spread his wingspan wide. Light shone from the core of his being and he said, Remain here, Jasper and you too will be nourished beyond your expectations. The fruit of God’s love is in the water. Right now your spirit drinks deep. Can you feel it? The Father’s love manifests within you. Then he rocketed away in a bright streak of white light.

Laying back and relaxing in God’s Holy water of life, Jasper did feel something. Undeniably, he soaked up God’s love and it saturated him with such nourishment he was filled to a reinvigorated capacity.

The spirit of a woman was passing by when she stopped and took her time to really regard and observe Jasper. She was tall and elegant, even by an angel’s standards. She spoke to him, saying. I recognize you. You’re Jasper, the one who’s to become a famous guide for angel warriors.

Oh, come on, me? Jasper rose out of the water and floated next to the woman. I’ve done my part for Heaven and Earth, now I aim to relax here, in the presence of the Lord to the end of time.

Oh? Relaxation, you wish? The woman waved her arms wide creating a portal at the center of a frame of swirling clouds. "It is true our God wants the best for you. Relaxation is also part of the plan, but not this lifeless existence you pursue. Meaningful relaxation might look like work to you but it is so rewarding in its own right, like when a person tils the earth
