MY STORY

My fascination with books started early as I truly was a gifted reader, considering my parents migrated from Italy to Australia in their early twenties. Neither of them wrote nor spoke very good English. I enjoyed immersing myself in books; I would stare in wonder and fascination at the illustrations on the page. I loved it when books were read to me by my teachers, hearing the expression in their voices, bringing the characters to life and intrigued by words written on a page.

Visiting the library became, and still is today, my sanctuary. I loved this place so much that one evening the librarian switched off the classical music, the lights and locked up, unaware that my sister and I were reading quietly. The two of us were still in the children’s section of the library. However this event has not deterred me from visiting the library today. In fact I enjoy it more than shopping.

In 1985 my 46-year-old mother had a desire to start her own menswear business. Despite my father s hesitation, she took a leap of faith, bought her first shop and began operating her very own business. I was 15, the youngest was 14 and my eldest sister was 18 and studying fashion design. The business grew steadily. When we introduced bridal wear, we needed more space to showcase the gorgeous wedding gowns, buying a second shop conveniently next door and merging the two stores in a one-stop bridal shop.

I knew nothing about bridal wear at the time, so my desire to learn was the starting point for me. I soon realised that if you want something in life, you need to go and get it. As luck would have it, I began at the library and read everything I could regarding selling. The topic on wedding dresses was rare, so I read selling techniques from all different industries: car, travel and whatever I could tweal to suit the bridal industry. I trialled these techniques on each customer. Things improved when I included sincerity, value and my own personality into the dialogue. I kept a database on clients’ likes and dislikes and in less than the first month successfully sold my first wedding dress. Furthermore I had buying knowledge as I had a database of what clients were wanting.

Happily married at 23, I took the advice from my mum, doctors and friends, who all said take a break, go on a holiday and forget about the business, and begin a family. I tried to fall pregnant for four years, I read
