About the Author I was born and raised in New Jersey. I lived in Central New Jersey all my life. I love baseball, TV, hiking, biking, and the beach. I have an adorable cat. I have a mother, brother, sister, father, best bud, and a lot of cousins. I got into writing because it felt more sane than being an artist for me anyway. There were way too many avenues in being an artist. I love to live through artists and support them. I am a peppy, happy, upbeat, positive, and “full of life” kind of person.

    CHAPTER 1

    WHAT? HUH? WHO? WHAT? HUH?

A t the end of the block on the right, there was a mom and pop shop named Sweet Treats and seated about thirty-five people. Sweet Treats had two big windows on either side of the front door painted with a cool light blue with two brown steel-crafted benches out front and a dark blue two-door hatchback car peeking out from the side of the building. Sitting on the windowsill was a pitcher and a wicker basket filled with foam pears. The lights went dark, and a tall black-haired girl walked out of the diner, turned around, and locked the door.

Rumble, rumble, rumble! Crack! Boom! The sky lit up. The girl grrrred at the thought of forgetting her umbrella. Ahhhh! Ahhhhh! She stopped in her tracks and thought that wasn’t thunder or lighting. She walked a couple of steps and stopped again. Ahhhhhh! Ahhhhh! She walked to the front of the car to investigate if the scene was okay!

She cornered the car and gasped! Crack! Boom! The sky lit up again only for seconds she walked closer. Crack! Boom! This time, she was close enough to recognize what it was that was sitting on the garbage can. She grabbed it and hurried back to the car, thinking to herself, Who would do this to the poor dear? Crackle… crackle… crackle. Slam! She shut the passenger’s side door and ran around the car to get in.

Phew, it’s awfully wet out there, huh? She turned on the heat so they could both dry out. She pulled out and drove down the road, thinking to herself, I’m hearing this ominous sound. I looked right, I looked left, and I looked behind me the best I can while I’m driving. I stopped for a traffic light. It’s dark, so I’m getting apprehensive. I start up again—’cause the light’s green, and it’s still there. Now I’m frantically looking around like I’m being chased by a monster, but I can’t find the sound! Until I look over, and I realize it’s coming from the passenger’s seat? That’s what babies sound like—oh my god!

Halle pulled up to her place of residence at 3344 Main Street in South Paw, Indiana, in the northeast part of the state. She had an upstairs apartment in town that was an inheritance from her
